A Day at my Cabin:
Hey guys! Had a slower week this week, giving myself some time off from projects, so i figured I'd just take you along for a day at my cabin. I'm self employed, so I kind of come up with my own schedule every day, and it's been fun to find my little cabin routines and chores. Hope you enjoy ♥️
A giant thank you to my beautiful friend Allyson Smith for letting me use her song Mount Hermon in the beginning of this video. To listen to more of her music click the links below:

Why are some of us so drawn to your videos? I lived in the woods years ago. I love the smell, sounds, animals, birds, the night sky with moon and glimmer of sparkles under the loom of a forest. Trees surrounding a home, feel like protecting arms, giving a sense of calm serenity. Oh the woods is the most beautiful of all places. At 68 years of age, with some health issues, the convenience of a small city is needed. But alas, I long for that quiet place of splendor. Life is indeed best in the woods. So I watch your videos to relive a part of my own past life. Thank you, Hannah.

Well spoken, I'm glad to see another generation discovering life in the woods. A full moon on snow covered landscape, my crystal palace enchanted. Lives on in the winds of time, mountains covered in the morning mist . Every moment worth its weight for sure. :)

Yes, Kathleen, nearly to 68 myself and how I have missed my little house in the mountains, with the good fortune to be located on the edge of a national forest. I love the trees. On my little piece of land I had 122 full size incense cedars and Sugar, Ponderosa and Jeffery pine, a dozen silver fir, 6 black oak and four manzanita, and 3 madrone, as well as dozens of seedlings and saplings. And I knew them all, personally. Friends would come and bring their dog (who was not permitted to be off leash to chase things that didn't need chasing) and the woods would go eerily quiet. When the friends and dog left, all the birds, squirrels, owls, bats, frogs, deer, coyote, raccoons, opossums, skunks, lizards, snakes, fox and weasel and even the June bugs would return magically, as if they watched and waited for the car with the dog inside to drive off down the lane. I so loved my sanctuary and wished I could have stayed forever. Now I'm retired and am thinking of returning to the woods. It's been nearly 30 years since I left the mountain but every memory and smell, every breath of the snow-flavored wind off the high slopes, the sound of it through the pines, the sound of walking on acorns and the quiet of fallen pine needles, the sudden glimpse of a deer through the tree trunks, there one moment and gone the next, the smell of wood smoke from the stove, or of incense cedar on a hot summer day, the feel of rain that makes its way through the canopy of cedars and pines--all this is still with me. All is as vivid today as it was the day I left there. I must remind myself to cherish these memories because even if I am so fortunate as to move back to the Sierra montane again, it will not be the same. Which is likely just fine since I am not the same either. But I am with you, Kathleen, in the love of that "quiet place of splendor." So hopefully, dear Hannah, you will allow the Great Mother to imprint the land and trees upon your heart so that you can carry it with you through the years no matter where your journey takes you.

@@Marie.b Your description is accurate of when I built the barn, before putting the house together . It was rough going most of the time, but worth it. I'm sure I still look unkept most of the time. I'm oblivious to the smell of muddy horses, so I'm told :) Surely Hannaleeduggan will have those days as well with her expanding homestead. Electricity in the woods is nice while the weather holds up. I'm happy to see another capable generation making a go of it. Jim M.

Unsolicited well intentioned cooking advice: the reason the curry took so long to cook is because the wok has a very small bottom so it was basically bottle necking the heat through that small space to the rest of the pot. A big pot would have cooked faster in this case. I’d save the wok for frying🧡

I would do a gravel driveway. Ive got one at my house and it lasts a long time if you do it right. You will need a base of smaller gravel (sometimes called "crusher run") and then do a second layer of larger gravel. This will help it settle in well and last a lot longer before getting worked down into the dirt.

Just an added thought to your woodstove use especially as the weather gets colder. Add some firebrick to bottom of your woodstove a layer or two thick they will hold more heat and give you longer warmth froom your fire. Also you will want to add more wood as it is the coals and red embers that build up in the bottom that give you all that nice warm heat for hours and hours. Just an FYI from someone that has used woodstoves for years on how to get better results and longer heat from your stove. Great videos keep them up!

Just a suggestion for heat! They have the oil filled heaters for under $80 that would keep your upstairs nice and warm once your stove goes out at night. They have timers, so you can set it for however long you wish to sleep and it will turn off in the morning. They're incredibly energy efficient, I use one to keep my back porch a 4 season porch in the minus 40°C winters here! Its no noise, unlike that space heater you've got theyre completely silent! When my power goes out it even heats 700sqft of my house. I think it would save you some wood and on extra cold days would be nice!

@@armslength2618 you must have had a older rig. The new ones are quiet, silent infact. There is no noise when mine heats up at all and no clicking noise at all! And it only costs me under a dollar a day to have on 24/7! It also has heated my entire 700sqft living area when my furnace quit. Its not very big either, the size of a pizza box. Old ones are very inefficient though. I also wasn't saying she should quit using the stove because I completely agree with you, they pack the most punch! But alas you cannot keep a stove going all night. That's why I suggested she have one on a timer to run while she sleeps until after waking up when the stove gets going again :). 😊

That's funny becoz I think that cities are way less safe than woods (considering the density of population around). I think it's a capitalist view that brings us think/wants to have Fear about woods and nature or believe we are in danger, and trying to stay Away from what make us feel good. :-)

Honestly I think woods vs the city is such a preference thing. For instance I have grown up all my life in the woods or near the woods and wouldn't feel at all comfortable or safe in the city with all those people. But a lot of people are scared of the wood and wild animals and feel the city is way safer.

I grew up just outside of NYC and then I moved to the woods and lived there for 2 decades, now I live totally in between in a little town. I gotta say, my favourite by far was living out in the woods. It's so peaceful esp when you don't have neighbors. My partner and I are planning on getting back out into the woods for retirement, not staying in a noisy town!

I'm a sixty-year-old mom RU-vid watcher. I have a acre long driveway side Drive access. What you can cheaply do is fine pine needles in your area take them and fill in the drive. Pine needles work great. If you knew anybody who had some free or cheap Stone you could do that too. My friend Michael who is crippled. His parents came from Massachusetts. They laid logs down. And covered the logs. It worked great. That is a lot of work though. Those are all things that hopefully would be free to you and would be within your Forest.

Your driveway needs a dump truckload(5-10 cubic yards)of 1-1/2"-3/4" gravel bond for the first layer. Drive on/over it and work it in for a period of several months or seasons and then decide whether to add more of the same or go up in size for further solidification.

I live in Minnesota and did gravel on my driveway. Research gravel ASAP..... spring is too muddy for the trucks to get it.... close to your house, it is cheap but they usually charge more for the delivery than the crushed rock. I did lime, used a plow to level it, wet it down, drove over it a bunch of times, and it is hard like pavement now. DO IT THIS FALL if at all possible because otherwise it will be rutted frozen ice and you will get stuck, spinning your tires, and even have a very slippery walk to the mail box this winter. Find a neighbor with a plow truck and get the gravel level & packed before it needs to be plowed, otherwise you will be plowing gravel along with the snowfall. I guess I have only been plowing my own driveway for 2 winters, so am just getting competent at snowplowing. You can do it!!! I did, for about $100, but my driveway is super short compared to yours. I would tell the gravel company how long your driveway is, and they will let you know how many loads you will need. Do not skimp on this one.... IMHO.... It is very satisfying once you have accomplished it and you will be so happy when you don't get stuck all winter! High quality snow tires and 4 wheel drive if you can..... Good luck!
@brendag2891
@brendag2891 3 года назад
P.S. The past 2 springs here in MN, when you need gravel the most, is when the river floods in St Paul and the barges that bring in the crushed rock unload it, but the trucks cannot get to the gravel because of the snow melt and Mississippi rising. Get this done NOW, is my strongest recommendation.

If you run out of birch bark as a fire starter dryer lint also works well. We stuff some inside old toilet paper roll tubes to start fires with. Also for the driveway, crushed up pine cones are a more cost-effective way to cover a driveway (but certainly more work intensive). Purchasing gravel or wood chips is also an option, but depending on how long your driveway is, it could cost a bit.

Driveway fix, every 10 yrs or so I add a triaxle load of 3/4" gravel to the driveway. A good driver will disperse the load evenly as its dumped out, eliminating the need for extra equipment and cost. Make sure you have a plan for snow (snow blower or plow). In my area, once it freezes any accumulation will continue to build up until springtime, making it impossible to drive through, even with 4x4. It gets -20f over by me, not sure of the temperatures by you. Rock-On :) Jim M., NE Pennsylvania mountains.

A few things that you might want to try? Lay some of the fireplace logs onto your driveway in the same way that you would lay bricks down. A friend of ours is a hunter so he made his own toilet by using a 5 gallon bucket lined with a plastic bag, then add a real toilet seat on top and secure it with 2 short bungee cords. You never know if you're going to get sick or not want to go outside because of weather or an animal. Afterwards you can dump the liner in the outside.
