After 37 years, Carol and I returned to Clark Air Base and recalled all the wonderful memories we had there when we were assigned there as a proud member of the United States Air Force.
I was a US Marine platoon commander in Vietnam 1968-69. At the end of my tour, I was able to take 3 days and catch a Medivac flight from Da Nang to Manila and then a bus to Clark AFB because my dad was the Commander of Clark AFB at the time and I wouldn't be able to see my parents again for a few years. It was a two lane road from Manila to Clark and they let me off at the main gate. I then had to walk to the Clark AFB Headquarters building which was a long walk. I located my dad's office and approached his secretary. I was in my Marine uniform, I was heavily tanned from spending a year in Vietnam, and I had lost 30 pounds. I probably looked like a scare crow in a Marine uniform. She cautiously asked if she could help me. I replied, "I'm Lieutenant Bobbitt and just arrived here from Vietnam before heading back to the states. My dad is the Commander of Clarke and I'm here to see him and my mom for a day before I have to return to the states. She pressed the intercom to my dad's office and in a shaky voice said, "Sir, you son is here to see you." She was obviously emotional. My dad was in shock. My brother had been severely wounded in Vietnam a few months before and was in a hospital in DC and they were worried about my fate. I spent the rest of the day with my dad and mom and we talked and drank until the early morning and then I had to get back to Manila to catch a flight back to Vietnam to then return to the states. That would be the last time I saw my dad. He died suddenly from a heart attack in his sleep. My mom called me from Clarke to notify me but asked that I not try to fly to Clark because her brother who was a Major General in the Air Force was already on his way to take care of all of the arrangements and could cut through any red tape. When my mom returned to the states to bury my dad at Arlington Cemetery, she lived with me and my wife for a few months. On Christmas Day of 1971, she thanked us for taking care of her but she felt she needed to move on. So she packed her car and drove off. She either didn't know where she would be going or wouldn't tell us. A month later, I got a call from her that she had bought a townhouse in Indian Harbor Florida. Why she decided to settle there I don't she knew or if she did she didn't tell us why. She lived there until she died at the age of 81 and I buried her with dad in Arlington Cemetery. They were the best parents a kid could ever hope to have and I still miss them.

Very interesting as I was a military dog handler at Clark from April 1969-Sept 1970. We had a post among the officer housing area and may have guarded your parents house at night.
I'm very much happy if US air force and US Naval fleet in subic are returned back and normally operate & ready to defend to our country from china. God bless USA

I found this very touching. After I was promoted to TSGT. , I was forced to leave Clark in 1997 because my 4 years had ended. I said forced because I didn't want to leave! I sent for my Filipina girlfriend and married her in the US. I retired as Msgt. in the US at Mt Home AFB, Idaho. I turned down the promotion to SMSgt because I decided I wanted to return to the PI, but my request was denied. so I put in my retirement papers. And we returned to the PI in 1983. I am now 79 and my wife is 65. The Philippines has given me the happiest days of my life! Thank you for this video!!👍And I just sub!!!
Thank you for watching my video. My original tour at Clark was 18 months, but after I got married I was able to obtain command-sponsorship and got extended to 48 months. After my 48 months my commander denied my request for further extension because he told me it's not good for my career to stay in one place for a long time. So I know what you mean! @@GilCarolAdventures Sometimes, commanders don't realize a happy trooper is going to perform beyond what others think is normal. Telling you what he did, that was not a good decision! If he had allowed you to stay where you were happy, there is no telling how high you would have climbed! Sometimes, they should Airforce command decide! When I turned down that promotion, they were dumbfounded. ASKING ME WHY? I said I had become unhappy with what they decided. So, I retired (quit)!
I was stationed at Clark AB from Oct 76 to Oct 79. It was 3 of the most amazing years of my life. It’s nice to see how modern the country has become. It’s a beautiful country and the people are gracious and hospitable.

If you haven’t been back since, they now have a freeway going thru the base from the north all the way to Subic Bay. They now have several casinos and resort-style hotels on base, malls, new housing, modern office buildings, and a state-of-the-art international airport. But for the most part, majority of the Clark grounds have been neglected by the government, as if no one maintains it like it used to be. The rest of the base looks like a ghost town! But it feels great to be back at Clark and cherish the wonderful memories left there! ❤️

Certainly one of the most BEAUTIFUL USAF bases that I've ever been on. And I'd bet I've been on MANY. I was at Clark for "snake school" in 1971. The Volcano LOOMED over the area. It didn't look real. It looked like a digital representation. I remember talking to the manager of the O-Club then. He had been a manager there since before WWII. When the Japanese took over the Philippines, they asked him to continue managing the club. When the Americans returned, he just kept right on doing that job. Great to see the base back to its beautiful self, but for some needed maintenance work! Many thanks for this video!

Thank you for your service, I got to see Clark Air Base back in the 70 's, my brother in law was going back to the States taking the MAC flight. He was in the USCG active duty that time.

We had two of our children there at the hospital. We loved every minute of being assigned to Clark. We cried when we were “forced” to PCS back to CONUS. We lived in Embassy housing up on Johnson Ave, just slightly north of FEN hill. I worked out at the practice range near Camp O’Donnell. I was chief of the Transmitter facility. Good times!!
Thanks for watching my video. Our first-born daughter was also born at the Clark Hospital. That hospital is now being renovated and I heard they are turning it into a Clark Museum. Not sure when it will be completed but it is in progress! Clark will always have a special place in my heart!

I was never stationed at Clark but visited frequently for TDY participating in Cope Thunder and other TYDs. Although I live in Cebu now, I only visited Clark ones after it closed. Makes me sad to see a beautiful base once home to the F4s and now no more.

this is not a military base alone just like before..the government develop it to a commercial,airport,estabkishment,malls..so that it benifits the sorruonding municipal city as well creats plety of job.
@@runningseagull5413 thank you for watching my video! Yes, I know that, but some Philippine Air Force units are still assigned there so it’s still a military base but not like before. The casinos, shops, and airport are very nice, but for the most part, Clark has been neglected. If you’ve seen Clark during its heydays you will know what I mean.
Nice video. I was at Clark AFB in 1950-52. My dad was heading up air support for Korean war from Philippines. Back then there was an insurgent group called the hucks. Security was very tight. We live right on the road by the parade grounds.
Great video. Last time I was in Clark was Jan. 1971. I was in transit from Vietnam to Subic for jungle survival training. We had a 3 day layover at Clark. It was really a 3 day R&R from Vietnam. Clark was paradise compared to Vietnam.
Thank you for showing Clark Air Force Base. It gives me good memory too when I had my 1st job at Civil Engineering Squadron as a Civilian employee in 1973 where I met my hubby a US Air Force Military. Then I worked as Stenographer/Secretary for Major Barth, 3d Combat Support Group/Security then worked for Lt Col Johnston at 3d Tactical Fighter Wing (by the Flight Line) in a span of three years before we moved here in the SF Bay Area in 1977 where my husband honorably discharged from the US Air Force then worked as a Civilian for the US Navy total of almost 30 years before Clinton decided to close most of the US Bases here in the Bay Area. Somebody posted a video of Clark AFB Hospital where my daughter was born. Sad to see the "used to be" beautiful hospital is now fully abandoned. Thanks once again for reviving my memory ng isang magandang parte ng buhay ko at pamilya ko. My 2 older sisters retired at Clark AFB then migrate here in US with their family and one of them continue working for the US Dept of Defense with her husband and retired few years ago. Thanks for sharing your video. I know the feeling of going back to places where we were stationed. A few years ago I did go back to my first duty station in Germany. As I was driving my car around the places I traveled back then, I felt overwhelmed by reliving a lot of fond memories and of friends, some of whom are no longer with us.

After Pinatubo when the USAF moved out, the locals moved in. At least at Subic the local mayor made sure the place was secured and looting minimised. At Clarke it was a lot more 'native' with everyone helping themselves. Lots of different businesses tried their luck. best thing would be for the USAF to return. Locals would love it; only the 'Rizals', the proud Filipinos with more money than most would find it an affront to their pride!
Thanks for watching my video! I heard about the looting at Clark after Pinatubo so that's unfortunate. Maybe one day the USAF will return to Clark on a permanent basis. That's still a possibility given the threat from China.
I was there from 77-a80 and then again from 82-86 and was 374th FMS Flightline super the last Tour. After spending so many years there, Clark is really missed. I named my son Clark as well. He's 41 now. Time is flying. Thanks for the good ride, bruce.

Great video footage of Clark. I was in PACAF '81 - '84 (Yokota AB, Japan). I was eligible for EML Space-A flights to Clark AB. Flew there as a passenger on a C-130 Hercules. Travelled up and down the west coast of Luzon. Visited my Ilocano relatives and then took the Rabbit to Batangas, then a ferry to Oriental Mindoro, then stayed at a resort at Puerto Galera. Good times, great memories.

Yup, time flies! I was there 82-86. Before that nasa March AFB ako. Yung squadron namin (3AGS) participated in many Cope Thunder exercises at Clark. We also went TDY to Osan and Kadena many times. Good times pare!
What a great time and location to start a family! I was Navy from 87-92 but never made it to the Philippines while on active duty. Finally after many years I went as a civilian and married a Filipina from Tacloban City. Your video makes me so sad that I was never able to experience the truly unique experience of being stationed there. God bless you all and thank you for sharing this with us!!

In Sept 1972 I spent 2 days and 2 night at Clark waiting for a MAC flight home from Viet Nam. Glad to see it has recovered from the Mount Pinatubo eruption. I'll never forget the drive from Subic Bay to Clark. Beautiful area.
Flashbacks! I was also in the AF, and retired long ago as a MSgt. I was stationed at Clark from '83 to '87. So I was there a bit of the time you were! May have even met you somewhere. You never know. I worked at Satcom. Loved it! I to a good look at your NCO Leadership School video to see if I might be in it, as I went to Leadership School there as well. The main gate you showed is exactly how I remembered it. Lot's of unpaved roads outside Gate 2. Lot's of trikes and jeepneys, but not many cars. LOT's of bars, of course. I played thousands of games of pool and darts, and drank my share of Red Horse, San Mig, and Carlsberg. The funny thing is, I now live in the Philippines full time, for over 7 years now, but in Or. Mindoro. We haven't been back to Angeles City yet, but we plan to. It's obviously FAR different here now than it was back then. I actually miss those days.

Things look much different now at Clark but we miss the old Clark. Sad to see that the majority of the base was abandoned and not being maintained like in our days! @@GilCarolAdventures And yet another coincidence, as we live in Naujan (Barangay Kalinisan). I have 60% VA disability, as I was in Iraq 3 times and had some injuries. No lost limbs and such, so function pretty well still. After watching your video, I did some on line searching of Clark. I saw some good, modern stuff, and some bad stuff that made me a bit sad. But still, always great memories of that base! So many friends. Air Force Baby! All the way!
@@dwanemarsh4378 Amazing coincidences! Glad to hear you survived Iraq! 🇺🇸🙏🙏 My mom was born and raised in Barangay San Agustin in Naujan. In fact, we have tons of family members who still live there and some in Poblacion Naujan. I haven’t been there in a while though! Love that area! My grandfather owned acres and acres of rice fields in Barangay San Agustin and I worked there in the fields during the summer time. Lots of fond memories there as well. Go visit Clark and see for yourself. I miss the old Clark!
Love this video! I was stationed at Clark in 1981 as an airman. I was also assigned to the 3rd AGS (Weapons) 26th AMU (Aggressors). I lived in Bldg 7513 and if my memory's still working, our orderly room and snack bar (Kudos Room) were in Bldg 7516. Salamat po pare!😊

I served for six years in the USAF crewing F-4D&E models. The E models I crewed were stationed at Osan AB in S Korea. In December of1976 we took 10 of them to Clark on a 19 day TDY. It was the best TDY I had in the six years that I served! We had a blast! Thanks for bringing back some good memories.

I was stationed at Clark from 1988 through 89 when the 374th TAW moved to Yokota Japan. Got out of there in the nick of time. Within a month after leaving there was a major earthquake then in June 1991 Pinatubo erupted. That's when the U.S. pulled out. There were good memories and not so good memories. Mostly good friends that I still keep in contact with today.

I was in the Navy stationed in Guam in 1977-79 and used to fly from Anderson AFB to Clark all the time to go down to Subic to go on ships. I found the locals to be very nice. And I know quite a few guys who married local girls.

I was stationed at Clark, AB from April 1982 - October 1983. The BEST times of my life. Beautiful country, beautiful people, great weather. It was and still is paradise. 3rd CRS. I had an American GF whose father was an officer, (I was enlisted) and we all used to hang out on the weekends. Too bad that Steph and her family had to rotate to Washington DC at Andrews AFB. Great memories.

You must have flown the 807/808 missions to and from Clark back in the 80's. Couldn't get a Space A on those flights to go back home to California. Thank you for your service Sir!
@GilCarol1112 Thank you for your service and again....the memories. The 808 was the return flight through Clark. The 807 was westbound and went Anderson to Yokota and overnight in Kadena. The 808 started in Yokota. I flew a few Clark floaters, too. Over 10 days in and out of Clark....good times.
Dig the Monza 👍🤙 I am a Navy veteran and retired Army 1SG. There were bases that I was stationed that had AF personnel. I always marveled at how the single military personnel are treated across the branches. Barracks vs. Dormitories. My soldiers would see how the AF guys lived and I had to deal with that. There was no BOSS program back then.

I was stationed there in the 1970s - and a guest on a couple of ships a few years afterward. Loved that place ....the people ... the countryside. Man, things were great when the Philippines was one of the US' best friends .... we could have kept that friendship if the US hadn't acted a fool.
I was stationed at Sangley Point 1964-1967 (Navy). We used to ride our motorcycles and have races right inside the front gate, to the right as you enter.

If my memory is correct you worked in the 3rd AGS Orderly Room. I was an aircraft mechanic on the F-4 Phantoms. I was assigned to the 3rd AGS in 1976 - 1977 and also 1983 -1986.
Soon the fast rail service between clark airport to manila will begin service. There are several new and vey huge Las Vegas style casinos along the main road. Angeles city is also known as little korea with a huge population of south koreans
Thanks for watching. Clark and Angeles have changed a lot since I left Clark. I saw the casinos and the new airport there, but I believe more projects are coming! But development there is very slow!
You triggered my memories of Clark during the war in the late 60’s and early’70’s. The crossroads of the Pacific war effort. Jungle Survival School. The Negritos. All night poker games at the O Club.
I was at Clark from Feb '60 to Aug '61. Many months of memories. I look at Google Earth to see what has changed, and there has been a lot! Of nine installations I was assigned to, only three are still active. Not much to go back to see!

Nice video. I get all the nostalgia. We had really just began our lives then. I served at the same time in the army. No opportunity to revisit any of the posts were I was stationed. Not sure I would want to. I can see that being such a bitter/sweet experience.

I was in 6th grade, and vividly remember Clark Air Base back in the 60s. It was a beehive of continual activity. There was also a school for the American kids, a great px, and a boat launch to take people across Manila Bay.
1970-72 I was stationed at US Naval Radio Station (T) Tarlac, which was about 30 north of Clark. All of our shopping, medical, married Navy housing, softball league, etc. was on Clark. I have lots of good memories of it.

Gil, That was astonishing how much has changed. I was there from 82 a 85, I would have never known the the 3rd Tac base ops was once there, where the airport is now. I plan on a trip over there next year. Hopefully the Maharaja Hotel is still there.
Landed at Clark in June 69' and took the bus to Subic to pickup my ship. Roads were small and different then. Had a fun ride. First time away from home, didn't dissapoint! Nice to remember.

I didn't know that this video would connect me back to my friends whom I haven't spoke to or seen since then. But anyway, how are you my friend? I'm so happy to hear from you. Do you still reside in Austin? It's been a long time since we last spoke! Hope you and your family are doing well. Coming back to Clark was aa very nostalgic trip for us. Somehow it feels like coming back home! Clark has changed a lot since then but as soon we drove in to Clark all the great memories came back! Can't describe the feeling but I felt connected to it right away! Not sure if you've been back there since you left but you should when you get a chance. I got to spend a week there back in 82 when I was a kid. All I remember now is a huge banyan tree with a wrap around bench outside a laundry facility, oh, and seeing a toad the size of a dinner plate.
This brought back memories, good and bad. I was with the 374th TAW and 624 CAMS from Dec 88 to Jun 91 and was evacuated to Subic. It’s bizarre that the RU-vid algorithm brought this up. Except for a few buildings, it’s almost unrecognizable.

Fond memories. Stationed at Clark from 1976 to 1983 in the 374th Aerial Port and lived in those barracks a short time though lived off base most of my time there. Best on base food around then was the mongolian barbecue at the NCO club, just awesome.
The fields aren't maintained, because they probably can't be, since the last volcano eruption. It leaves rocks and ruts everywhere that you can't see, making it a minefield for a mower. You'd have to do what we do, and just turn a bunch of cattle loose out there. They'll clean it up. Nice video, though. Although I live in PI, I haven't been to Clark.
Its sad but we Filippinos are resilient after the US personale and air force flew back to the states,but don't worry we try our best to redevelop Pampanga in general
I was TDY to Osan several times with 3AGS, from 82-86. Everytime we went there it was always cold! 😂😂 Some wonderful memories there as well. Thanks for watching my video! 😊

Nice view of Clark, I never made it there during my Army 1980’s years going back and forth across the Pacific. I heard it was a beautiful place to visit. But I did get Hawaii for 5 years but not as nice looking as the PI.
Thanks for watching our video! We left Clark a year before you arrived there! Glad to hear you're going back there very soon. Things have changed a lot since then. You can now fly directly to Clark International Airport via connection from Korea or Taipei. There are some really nice hotels/casinos inside Clark if you're looking for a place to stay while you're there. I'm going back to visit there again soon and do another video. LOL. The negative comments about dilapidated buildings and unkempt grounds seems to show the someone forgot about the 1991 Pinatubo eruptions that covered most of the base with several feet of caustic volcanic ash. During this same month the area was struck by Typhoon Yunya as well. I think the place looks pretty good considering.
Thank you for watching my video. No, I didn't forget about the 1991 Pinatubo eruptions!!! However, that was about 33 YEARS AGO! That's a very long time ago!!! The reality is the government has "neglected" to maintain Clark like it used to be and I can't speculate as to the reasons why. If the USAF was still there it will be a different narrative. Some of the places I visited look pretty amazing but the majority of the grounds of the former base looks pretty sad in my opinion! I miss the old Clark like many of us here!
I was stationed there from Dec. 88 till the very last day of Nov. 26, 1991 when we turned the base over to the Philippine Government. When we left Clark, the Base was pretty much 95% cleaned and cleared of ashes and mud with the exception of buildings that were destroyed by the eruption along with the typhoon that came along with it the 3rd CES Squdron did a good job of removing ashes, mud, debris and basically clearing up the base. It seems the Philippine Government was just interested in the financial aspect in developing Clark and not so much as maintaining the beauty that it was once known for. When I went back in 2017, 22 years after leaving Clark I was dismayed to see how the Base was maintained. The Base ground look more maintained when I left in Nov. of 91 then when I returned in 2017
Thank you for watching my video. My commander offered me a joy ride on the F-4 Phantom when we were deployed to Osan AB, Korea but I was too scared. Some of our unit members did take the joy ride and a few of them came back "so sick" that they were carried on a stretcher after they landed. Those Phantom pilots did everything they could to make them sick, doing all kinds of Gs!!! HAHAHAHA. But those were some of the fond memories I had at Clark. Fun times!
@GilCarol1112 I came down from kunsan in 1988 for live missile fire . Hurricane Ruby put the Williams air station and its drones out of business and we helped clean up the mess left by the storm. I made a comment about the mountain in the near distance was steaming. I was told it hasn't popped its top in over 100 years and I was over reacting. Pinatubo, I'm guessing on the spelling, showed everyone who was in charge. WE took our f16s back to Korea after 3 weeks of clean up. A Philippine general lost his life during that Hurricane when the pilot of his plane hit a street light on approach to Clark. I enjoyed the f4s on the ramp when I was there because my dad, and uncle both built the aircraft at st. Louis. I started in the USAF at Nellis AFB in north Las Vegas on the F4d in the 474 tfw, 430 amu. I will always love the f4 more than any aircraft I worked on( f4d, f16 a,b,c,d, B1) due to the fact it was a pilots plane. No flight control computers. computers . When at Clark I enjoyed the rc car track that had a lot of use. Was it still there on your visit?
