I think I read some interview a long time ago about how Maynard's anger when he wrote this song wasn't directed so much at his mom and her unwavering faith despite her illness, but more at her toxic religious community who didn't really support her and even implied that her disease was a punishment from god because of her failings and sins. The guy obviously did not appreciate that angle, as you can imagine.

This is a song that’s worth looking into the background of the lyrics for. Tool’s Wings for Marie pt1 and 10,000 Days pt2 also cover the subject (and together are my favorite song ever) if you’re interested in listening to them. The lyrics take center stage for most of it and you’ll get far, far more from them if you know more of the context. The easiest would be looking up a basic lyric explanation on Genius or some shit before listening

I thought the first lines on this track are interesting. “Your such an inspiration for the ways that I will never ever choose to be”. I wonder if he still sees his mother from that same perspective. I think MJK meant, you inspire me to never be like you. (according to those lines) I completely understand why MJK is angry. I think his mom is amazing for keeping her faith. I can’t even imagine how difficult that must have been. Physically and mentally. Great reaction DH. Thanks man.

Maynard's anger was a combination of her faith in the face of what her God had given her, but also that her church turned its back on her, saying that she obviously had deserved what happened because she didn't really believe. After completing the album, Maynard and Billy asked Rob Halford (Judas Priest) to give it a listen... you know, as you do, no biggie. lol They wanted to use 3 libras as the opening single. Halford listened, and then listened again, then told them "if you use Judith as your opening single, you'll sell a million." They went with his advice and went multi platinum. :-) and yes, David Fincher did speed up the video a bit to match the bassist Paz, finishing her hair on beat, however, if you watch live versions, yes the guitarist will sing the opening line that Maynard then comes in on, just barely overlapping.

The album 10,000 days is a tribute to his mother ( 10,000 days is roughly the amount of time she was paralyzed). The title track ( Wings for Marie) is Maynard accepting his mother's faith and her death. Tool wrote 3 tracks on that album, which when played together at the same time creates an entirely new experience. Might be the most impressive piece they've ever written.

I requested a song with the music video probably over a year ago called, Below the Sun - Dawn for Nobody. You said you put it on the playlist, just wondering if you ever gave it a watch? As for this song I think the music is much more powerful than the lyrics, but the part of the lyrics that gave me resolve in this song is the lyrics "Even though he's the one who did this to you. You never thought to question why." The rest of the lyrics for me are kinda on that Aenema spectrum. A lot of reading between the lines. Mayrnard has talked about this song on a emotive album that came with a DVD of their music videos with his commentary. My favorite APC song is 'Orestes' and the live version "A Perfect Circle - Orestes - Stone and Echo Live at Red Rocks" is a great rendition.

I could care less if the lyrics offend you. On some songs though, knowing the general concept behind the lyrics adds more gravity to the music itself. And you can get that understanding without having to analyze every word in agonizing detail. Artists put a lot of passion into their music as I am sure you and your band do. Whether they are coming from a place of sadness, anger, hapiness or in this case being indignant, it is more powerful to know where that passion came from especially when it is relatable.

It wasn’t just that she was still devout. I think if that was it he wouldn’t have been as enraged. But his mother’s church actually told HER that SHE wasn’t a good enough Christian and THATS why she had the aneurysm. I think something that is a bit missed, is while his mother's experience and him reacting to it inspired the song, the band mates express their own pain in this. Not to touch the top 4, but it can apply. I don't think the bassist throwing her hair in a bun was a "oh look it's a cool drop moment" but, once that happens, she's shown to join in the back up vocals. It's a group of people expressing themselves. Incredibly cathartic, imo. But hell I'm prolly reading too much into it

I'm not sure I understand Maynard's anger... Would he prefer his mother have no faith in God? Would he prefer his mother just believe she was afflicted with an aneurysm by a cold indifferent universe? I'm not sure how much better that would be. I also think there are a lot of Christianity haters who enjoy bashing Christianity, but would be super offended if a different religion were insulted this way.
@heyskipj
@heyskipj 2 года назад
I think the answer is yes... rather than believe in a god that she praises for giving her the affliction she is suffering through. In a non-faith sense, imagine praising someone who chopped off your legs, or ran you over with their car. Mind you, I'm an atheist so I don't understand such things and let people live in their own way.
@chrisdriver7776
@chrisdriver7776 2 года назад
@@heyskipj I don't think the analogy quite holds... (Presumably you wouldn't also believe the person who ran you over with a car created the universe and will welcome you in Heaven after death). From a son's perspective, I can see being pissed at God for doing that to your mother... But whether or not I agree with her faith... I have to say I find people admirable (not contemptible) when they have every reason to be resentful, yet find a way to be optimistic. And again, I'm not sure that believing in a purposeless universe is any better (particularly for someone who has been dealt such a difficult hand in life).
@heyskipj
@heyskipj 2 года назад
@@chrisdriver7776 we could search for a perfect analogy I suppose. But faith, a’la “god is good” doesn’t allow that. And to follow your family example, it could be much worse like a child watching her mom being struck down from a grandparent? Or spousal abuse? I wasn’t able to shrug this off as “love your enemy” because it’s more like “worship your enemy”. Or giving it a free pass to inflict you with harm. It is such a heart-wrenching song to rock out to.

@heyskipj
@heyskipj 2 года назад
@@chrisdriver7776 I’m only being concise. But isn’t your point that someone, who is/has been mistreated by their god (not an anonymous "someone") in such a merciless manner, who can "shrug" it off and continue worshipping makes her stronger? Like a beaten dog returning to its master? If a parent did that to their child, that child would be removed from that home, the parent would be locked away, and there’d be very few objections. And should I stop with the analogies? 🙃 For the record, I’m not speaking to Christianity specifically. All faiths for the most part don't hold their god accountable. It's simply a foundation of beliefs or "faith" that escapes me.

I'm a Christian and I'm not offended by the lyrics at all. (Helps that the music is awesome) I disagree with it strongly on theological grounds, of course, but the song itself deals in a very human sort of emotion that MJK is going through in his life and in these lyrics (not to mention all over the 10,000 Days record). We can all relate to that exasperation on some level. This song expresses a sort of mirror image to Job's story in the old testament. Faced with pain and suffering, the question of "why would a benevolent God allow this?" is asked and the conclusion is "He wouldn't, so He doesn't exist". And I don't care how much I disagree with the conclusion on a theological level (lots I could say there, but won't get into). That's the sort of pain and suffering that any good person (regardless of faith, although I also believe it's a major tenet of what we're supposed to learn through Christ) should be able to empathize with and be willing to offer comfort and support to. The conclusion MJK is coming to doesn't matter to me, nor should it. What matters is that we all have a chance to see his pain and empathize with him. What he went through sucks, quite horribly. And from what I've read, the reaction his family received through their faith community sucks, too. People shouldn't have to bear that kind of burden.

Fior the people bashing God's "role", he's not a lamp genious to grant your wishes neither the cause of your misfortunes. So wake up.

Everything can be discussed if you’re willing to have an open mind. Judge not least ye be judged. That includes everything. I also even as a Christian understand everyone has a right to believe what they want. I’m also very much a problem child. I’ve called God out in my life and said what the hell? If you don’t want me to question then give me more answers. Otherwise we have much to discuss on the other side. I’m a damaged Christian I don’t care. Even Christ on the cross asked God why he had forsaken him so don’t tell me I’m going to hell for asking questions. His own son questioned him.
