Spot on. When he was very young Maynard's mother (A very devout christian) suffered either a stroke or aneurysm (not sure which) that left her paralyzed for the remaining 30 or so years of her life. Maynard was very frustrated with her continued faith despite all that had happened to her. Following her death he wrote a very beautiful ballad for her with his main band Tool 10,000 days part 1 and part 2 (Wings for Marie (his mother's name was Judith Marie)). I suggest you check it out, beautiful songs. the name 10,000 days is emblematic of the time his mother spent confined to a wheelchair before she passed. I tear up listening to it almost every time.

One of the greatest songs I’ve ever heard. Maynard is a masterful vocalist and that note he carries at the end gives me goosebumps every damn time!!!

I like to imagine the voice and lyrics are performed for cathartic purposes, as a term of endearment with some taunting thrown in but respectfully acknowledges that her faith can be real to her while not to him, acknowledged out of a rarely earned respect forged in their lives and experiences together. Amazing piece of music.

I'm old enough to have bought the CD in stores back in 2000. The thing about playing it in a CD player is that the band's symbol will spin fast enough that it forms...a perfect circle. PS - I heard that Slipknot intro!! :)

Dude you nailed it exactly. This song was him coming to terms with his mother's death. Wings for Marie(his mothers name) and 10,000 days is his tribute to her after death. You have to listen to it. It will break your heart.

I would recommend doing a series on Tool songs. If you want followers and 'likers', just give any reaction to any Tool song and we'll come in droves. That band, IMO, is the greatest musically gifted band there's ever been. You have arguably the greatest drummer of all time in Danny Carey. MJK's lyrics and vocals are beyond sick. Adam's guitar progressions are mind bending, and Justin's bass is melodic and heavy all at the same time. You can't go wrong in choosing any song but at worst case, start with Aenima album, maybe 46&2, H, Jimmy, and Aenima itself, then move on to Lateralus. The Grudge, Parabol and Parabola, The Patient and then on to 10K Days, and finally finish off with their latest Fear Inoculum. Pneuma and 7empest for sure but Descending and Culling Voices are ridiculous. My suggestion though on each of these is to make sure you either read the meaning behind the song first or even have the lyrics up as the lyrics are such an integral part of Tool music. And set aside time. Tool's songs aren't your typical 4 minute song. But trust me, you won't wish they were any shorter than what they are.

His mother became paralyzed when he was eleven. (Tool has a song called "Jimmy" about how he had to go live with his father and deal with all of that at age eleven.) This song - Judith - is about not only her illness, but also his own anger due to the fact that he blamed God/Jesus for doing that to her for no reason that he could think of: (like he said, "It's not like you killed someone. It's not like you drove a spiteful spear into His side.") Despite what happened to her, she remained especially devout to God until she died and her devotion to Him was a particularly touchy subject with Maynard (the singer/songwriter.) He blamed God for what happened to her but the song itself is mainly about admonishing his mother for sticking with God even though he left her "broken down and paralyzed." and he sarcastically ends the chorus with the line, "He did it all for you." to kinda throw that Christian talking point back in her face. Good review, especially for doing no research on the subject! You got a new subscriber.

The song was written in 1999 or maybe even before and the album is from 2000 so it is 10 years before that video was posted and yes the song is about Maynards mother who died from complications from a brain aneurysm in 2003.

The singers mom had a stroke which left her paralyzed. He also sings in the greatest band of all time, TOOL! Try "Wings for Marie PT 2". The women Judith went to church with blamed her for the stroke for not being Christian enough and Maynard hated that.

I LOVE that you are such a girl's girl. You support other women and badass gals and you appreciate them for that. I wish there was more of us ladies that did that. But you always do; you did it here, you did it for Snow, did it for Nicki, and I LOVE you for being a woman that supports women. It shouldn't be rare.

There are great songs, there are masterpieces, and then there's Judith. The entire album is a monster.

One of the things I love about Maynard is that he doesn’t want the spot light , he wants your focas on the music which is awesome.

I have so much respect for this song on many different levels for several reasons. You’re right, it is deep. People already commented on the meaning, no need to repeat that. The lyrics and musical arrangements just flat out works, put together by a man whose childhood was traumatized by seeing his mother ravished by a stroke, yet her faith never wavered. He couldn’t process that. Fast forward to his adulthood, and he put it in this masterpiece.

The first line in the song is Maynard being hurtfully and angrily sarcastic to his mother. He was saying that he could never be like her, blind in her faith to the god who in his mind did this to her.

Paz is Argentinian. He is now the lead singer for tool. Maynard James Keenan.

Maynard is a truly God gifted genius. He has declared though that he no longer identifies with his Christian faith (Southern Baptist I think), and part of the reason for that were hypocrites in the church and his Mom's paralysis from an Aneurism. TOOL has an album called 10,000 days (which is how long Maynard;s Mom was in that state). You should listen to Wings for Marie and 10,000 days together.

I got to see Maynard perform before any of his famous bands. He did a local public television show here in Grand Rapids, MI. Two years later, Tool was born. Yes the song was inspired by his mom Judith but if you listen to the lyrical content he’s speaking about Jesus. “It’s not like you drove a spiteful spear into his side.” When Jesus was impaled on the stake a Roman soldier pierced his side with a sword to make sure he was dead.

This is a song about MJK's (Maynard James Keenan) anger... towards his mother, her god and her devotion. I've lived a life with the same parallels. MJK was raised in a fundamentalist household and religion was forced upon him. His mother had a stroke and became paralyzed. This anger probably came in the same way mine manifested. Though my mother has had continuous health issues and now partially paralyzed, she continues to push her views. She'll tell me how my great my life will be if only I repent and get saved. To which I think she is not a good representative for how great a life of Christianity is. When Christians "witness" to people, they talk about how your life will change for the better if they convert. I'm sure MJK's mother did the same thing. When you see someone you love is suffering and they blindly following a dogma that doesn't offer the payout they cling to, it's very upsetting.
