Absolutely. 15 years after being released, I STILL get goosebumps watching this. Instant time travel back to 2005-ish and how dark my life was...literally one of the only reasons I'm still on this planet is because the music saw me through, ESPECIALLY Tool & APC.
+Lucas Smith If you don't believe his movements and styles are different from band to band then you're either extremely naive or just plain stupid. Open your eyes and look, how about you don't be "that guy"
Ha! I'm totally not the only one who noticed that then. I've watched this video way too many times to count and every single time I wait for him to go into Tool Mode
is anyone else wildly attracted to maynard because of his voice alone? I mean the raw power and emotion in his singing is driving me insane,I cannot even explain it...
When I first saw it, I couldn’t see the whole thing and thought it said “I ❤️ Brazil”, especially since Maynard trains Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Then I saw it actually said Brad Wilk and was like FUCK YES!
Really? Cause they performed Judith way before this on Conan. Another really awesome performance if you can find it. I can't find it on youtube anymore....I had to google it.
Very impactful song on several levels...musically solid...lyrically important. as a fan it f..kn rocks...as a retired mental health worker stabs me in the heart.
Maynard's awesome body movements are a testament to his absolute mastery as a vocalist in all aspects. If you look at his body (Or if you have ever sang with a backline behind you as punchy/fucking godly & beautifully loud as TooL/APC is..) you'll see he's projecting and moving on certain phrasings or screams to gather and feel for the right placements within his body for projection and he also balances himself in his own nessicary way's to absolutely fucking belt it over all that power.. Maynard is truly one of the best Rock frontmen ever to front the mic. People often forget Vocals is a body instrument, not a throat instrument. His movements signify his care, training and passion for the song and the music over everything and anything else. He is A true artist and master musician. Z.
Yet many of his movements are counter to an optimal vocal posture. Hunching over the mic is a perfect example of this yet his voice is still commanding and powerful.
@@Nopaants I huntch over on some phrases to “visually” get the resonating placement above my mouth (Mask/Nose/cheeks). It’s definitely not taught to do this, but when you use compression/tissue distortion/diaphragm throws it actually helps so much. Crazy how everyone is different and our brains need visually leading in many different ways to arrive at the same spot…🤘
In my opinion that goes to TV On The Radio for their Letterman performance of Wolf Like Me. Search for "wolf like me Letterman" on RU-vid and click the one that says "HD and in sync". (They actually performed this same song on Letterman on 2 or 3 different years!! Yeah really!)
underrated by who? Maynard is one of the MOST respected vocalists in rock music. Using appropriate words is underrated. Every. Single. Music video. "underrated' . Use a new word, people, or just stop using 'underrated'. Eff.
I saw this video and his t-shirt when it first aired. A few months later I had the opportunity to meet Audioslave in Toronto and I asked Brad Wilk how his buddy Maynard was doing. He said great and that he was working on a new album, which later turned out to be 10,000 Days.
Pablo Neutrino seriously, been listening to this for over 2 years at work off and on and I still find myself jammin along and stopping whatever I'm doing to listen.
3:00 and what comes next.. IS THE MOST PERFECT PART EVER !!! Every time I come to listen to this song.. I reply it about 20 times.. so I can fill my ears with a nice amount of the *pure awesomeness*
You won't believe this but I will amuse you regardless, I actually saw them perform this song just after the release of this album when this song was actually a hit on the mainstreaming channels... well anyways, I happened to be in the arena where a "girlfriend" of Jame's and her father happened to be attending since this was Grand Rapids Michigan in the year 2003. December 9th to be precise. Look it up.... So! Anyhow, I met her and her father and got to ask some personal questions about "the man" and also got to tell them to tell him that he had a really huge fan out in the crowd and to see if he would allow me to come back stage with them because at intermission they were to go backstage and I was being rude and asking them how they were getting to go back stage. Well needless to say, they came out after intermission and he made some strange physical gesticulations in my direction and I swear we made eye contact as I held my hat in the air as to gesticulate back in that direction "hats off, to 'the man'." Then he screamed that last part all the way up until what you declared as the best part in the song. Which, I am not arguing that point only pointing out that if you heard that scream he did that night all the way up until that next part in the song you might agree that would be technically the best part (live) is all I'm sayin'
@@kollinasbury Sounds like a pretty standard connection with Nard. He's reserved on the record but cares a lot about his fans, & connects subtly. That sounds like a super epic moment! Can u imagine how many amazing moments like that a singer as present as Maynard has had? Must be so fun!
i love that Keenan's scream was way longer than the album version. I always was a little teased by the shorter album version but live, he lays it all on the line. These guys are awesome :)
Discovered these guys after trawling through RU-vid for nine inch nails and the went Wow! Didn’t even realise that I’d seen the guy perform with Tool because I was a little worse for wear at the Astoria in London. My bad for not recognising but he was painted blue. Fell in love with Outsider and play it many a time over and over. Ever learning me and I am humbled at stuff that requires my upmost.
Ughhh. Longtime Tool fan. This just came up in my mix. First listen and was loving it. Instantly recognized Maynard's voice. The struggle is real, as Maynard said it's not like a sprained ankle you can just walk off. Lyrics from the prospective of the Outsider (whom just doesn't get it), and just All so great. Then I stop and watch and Maynard's shirt says I ❤ BRAD WILK... Total LOVE!! Added to several lists while currently on a loop❤❤❤❤ Long live the WIZARD!!!
@@ChesterRGC Except Tool fucks up way more than APC. I've seen them fuck up Undertow a bunch lol. Not to mention Adam nodding thru half the set. tl;dr I BEG TO DIFFER!
Tool and perfect circle got me through my teen years. This song gets me through my adult years. Suicide thoughts are no joke. This song brings me back to my happy place
Don't know about anybody else, but when I'm outside listening to this on my phone....I just feel so good.. I walk with purpose and feel great. Truly an amazing song.
Never understood when people said "This band shaped me" until I heard TOOL. Nothing else like this in the world. The best live performance I've ever heard.
The songs on Thirteenth Step for the most part are about the various processes of addiction, behavioral addictions, chemical addictions, and each song is kind of sung from a different perspective. I have a lot of friends who've gone through a lot of these situations. Some of the songs are sung from the perspective of the actual drug, from the perspective of someone who has realized that they have an issue or a problem, also from the perspective of a person who realizes that if they don't do something they're going to die, a song from the perspective of a person who is in denial about a loved one, dying right before their eyes. And in the case of "The Outsider", it's sung from the perspective of a person who doesn't understand at all what their friend is going through, what their loved one is going through, and they think that it's more like a sprained ankle; they can just kind of walk it off."[10]
That outtro 3:18 till the end is a tough bit vocally. People keep talking about the 3:00 scream, but it’s not easy to hold enough breath to finish what comes after.
This song sounds at my place, at office, in mine the car and in my head. This song a soundtrack to my life. Many thanks of A Perfect Circle for your creativity. Store you God. Greetings from Russia.
This song takes on such new meanings 18 years later. As more and more people disconnect from society seeking to blow it up and potentially end others' lives prematurely. Sad really.
