A Philly Original: KYW School Closing Numbers

As of winter 2016-2017, KYW Newsradio 1060 no longer reads school closing numbers on the air. Generations of people in Greater Philadelphia grew up listening for their three- or four-digit code on the radio -- official word that a snow day could commence.
KYW's Ed Abrams and Brandon Brooks are featured in this audio clip from February 2016.

Back in my day we just waited to hear the magic words "ALL PHILADELPHIA PUBLIC AND PAROCHIAL SCHOOLS ARE CLOSED"!!

yes!!!!! do you remember when Public schools would close but Catholic schools would open? that drove me crazy!

Pretty sure La Salle High School was "333" and it seemed even with the slightest snow we'd have off because buses couldn't make it up hill to the school

Mine was 310. Many times, I heard, "In Montgomery County...306, 307, 308, 309, 311, 312, 313, 314..."

Now they don't announce the numbers. You can see the school closings right across the bottom of the TV screen during the newscasts.

We didn't have anything like this in Los Angeles. Nor did we have snow. We went to school regardless of the weather. Occasionally they would let us out early if the weather was really hot over 90°. AKA a trip to the beach. Most LA schools don't have air conditioning.
