In Oppenheim in Rhenish Hesse in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate you can find one of the largest ossuaries in all of Germany. St. Michael's Chapel (Michaelskapelle) hosts the bones of 20,000 people who died here between 1400 and 1750. It stands in the churchyard of St. Catherine's Church (Katharinenkirche) and the bones are visible through the gate.
The painting at 1:39 is a tryptich by Hans Memling called "The Last Judgment", painted between 1467 and 1471.

Impressive. I saw another one of these in Kutna Hora, Czech Republic. The tourist pamphlets in the church were attributing the massive influx of human remains, and hence the need for compact burials, to the Black Death and then the Hussite Wars. Yet they offered no explanation for the macabre decoration ideas. Have you seen the pictures? The sight makes your skin crawl.
