This scene shows exactly why Robert Freeman is my favorite character in Boondocks. He may have his moments of being selfish and stupid, but he's still a good man with a good heart and some moments of genuine wisdom too
Grandad is the reason his grandkids are good people. Dude's flawed like all of us, but he's a standup guy who takes his parental responsibilities seriously. (While trying to avoid them on a constant basis.) You know Riley would be doing hard time already at the age of 8 if his grandad wasn't on the case.
