If I was able to afford one of these it would have gringotts in the background with the poem from the steps on it that would look so cool. Maybe have the back of Harry and Harris entering!

Great job! And a lot of work. BTW Maybe you don’t have room for a drum sander, but you could use a 1 inch surfacing bit that would reduce the surfacing time a lot instead of using such a narrow one. Just a suggestion, no pun intended.

Thanks! I do have a large bit with inserts but on end grain(quite hard) it vibrates a lot so I have to go slower. Also you can't rotate it as fast. All in all I go almost as fast and have less bit changes with a 6mm or 1/4' but moving faster (up to 2000mm/min for 1mm pass).

first off, love your videos. I've recently stumbled upon your account and I love your work. You've probably answered this before, but when flattening, why do you use a smaller diameter end mill?
@stephanforseilles
@stephanforseilles Год назад
Thanks! I've tried flattening bits but on endgrain they dull quite quickly then there's a lot of vibration. I prefer to use a 6mm but and drive faster. :)

On the juice grooves . Pop the grain and run your juice grove tool path at full depth it will almost eliminate any sanding in the juice grooves

Very nice! A couple of questions: how deep was the pocket this time and what was the final start depth and flat depth? I know you normally do multiple toolpaths to get it deeper, was this the same concept?
@stephanforseilles
@stephanforseilles 2 года назад
Thanks. At the beginning of the video you can see the sheet where I wrote all the plug start depths. As you can see there are a lot of different values depending on how thick that part of the plug is, is it a "plug in a plug", etc. Based on that Plug Start Depth, Plug Flat Depths it generally 2 or 3 mm and pocket flat depth is plug start depth + glue gap (what I messed up in the 'Wall' part), often 1mm. I indeed do multiple 'stacked' toolpath if I have to go deeper than 8-9mm total (the max I'm comfortable doing in one pass).

Merci !
@stephanforseilles
@stephanforseilles 2 года назад
Merci.

One more thing, how thick do you typically make the plug boards? Do you change this depending on your start and flat depth?
@stephanforseilles
@stephanforseilles 2 года назад
I make them all around 18-20mm (no need to be very precise, not possible anyway as I can't plane them), as I often have no idea what I'll use them for at the moment I make them. :)

Why did you use the tracksaw for that final cut (vs table saw )
@stephanforseilles
@stephanforseilles 2 года назад
I didn't had any flat edge to reference too. WIth the tracksaw I'm sure I have a straight line and I can cut the 3 other faces referencing this one.

Get a flattening bit

I tried but on very hard woods end grain it vibrates a lot.
@tinydane69

Since you are using a tapered ballnose and not a vbit, are you doing these as pocket toolpaths and not vcarve toolpaths?
@stephanforseilles
@stephanforseilles 2 года назад
I configured the TBN as a flat-nosed V-bit. With the 0.25mm nose it doesn't make any significant difference in wood.
