The Telegraph’s podcast team were on stage at the British Embassy in Washington for a subscriber-only live event.
Conscription is Vladimir Putin’s “achilles heel” and he does not have the combat forces he requires to sustain a long war in Ukraine, says Dr Kimberly Kagan, president of the Institute for the Study of War.
Speaking at a live recording of The Telegraph’s Ukraine: The Latest podcast, at the British Embassy in Washington DC, Ms Kagan said the upcoming round of conscription in Russia will be a “period of great political tension” for Putin and that he fears what its effects could be as the country heads towards a general election next year.

The Telegraph, from an editorial standpoint, is a long way from my politics. However, the podcast team have done an amazing job of reporting on Ukraine without politicising that reporting. I wish we could have more of this type of journalism driving the headlines and leave the editorial and political narratives to daytime TV.

As an American living in the USA it brings tears to my eyes to hear how intent my country is on it's policy of perpetual war for perpetual peace. To rape and pillage Ukraine of all it's assets while indebting the country to the west's corrupt financial sector which benefits from every dead Ukrainian and every obliterated piece of infrastructure. Francis ' Delusions: he sees red lines for the West, but ignores red lines for Russia. He forgot that Georgia's murder of Russian peacekeepers in Ossetia and the US attempt to deploy a naval base in Crimea were red lines for Russia. Yes, they are consistent: - Ukraine is winning - Russia is collapsing - unprovoked - russian imperialism and expansion - "we do not want war" - "the other side is solely responsible for the war" - "the enemy has the face of the devil" - "the real aims of the war must be masked under noble causes" - "the enemy knowingly commits atrocities. If we commit blunders, they are unintentional" - "we suffer very few losses. the enemy's losses are enormous" - "our cause is sacred" - "artists and intellectuals support our cause" - "the enemy uses illegal weapons" - "those who question our propaganda are traitors" Not sure if Ponsonbe would be proud that his "commandments of war propaganda" holds true 100 years later.

@@sportsfanivosevic9885 Wrong, Ivan. We know for a fact that russia has a consistent pattern of actually committing genocide on languages, cultures and people. They've done it countless times and will never stop. It hasn't stopped. To your detriment, to the detriment of your childish lies, I and many others know of the decades of work done by international organisations to try to save countless languages which have purposefully been destroyed in the Soviet Union and russia over decades and decades, without any let-up. Or they've tried to at least record and document those languages before they've completely disappeared. It is a fact that russia has systematically deported indigenous people and brought in ethnic russians for the exact purpose of taking ethnic control of new areas, as well as for the purpose of creating fake grounds for invading larger areas. Just as has happened in the Eastern parts of Ukraine: it was a deliberate tactic of strong-arming or starving lots of Ukrainians away from there, and by strategically transporting in massive amounts of ethnic russians as an invasionary tactic. It has been done over decades and decades, but it has all been planned. They did the same in Estonia with the huge masses of ethnic russians which were transported there by the russian regime earlier. They had also transported massive amounts of Estonians away from Estonia into Siberia and other areas. But Estonia lucked out as they managed to use the small window of opportunity to gain independence and join NATO...and still russia tried to use those planned "invasion groups" to strong-arm Estonia.

Trump was the only president in decades able and willing to stop Putin from starting a new war on Russia's borders. He said e accomplished that by threatening Putin. Having killed hundreds of Russian mercenaries in Syria, Trump earned the respect of Putin. Trump made a deal with Poland to deploy Patriot Missiles, which Biden canceled day 1. Trump imposed sanctions that actually stopped Nord stream pipeline, which Biden canceled day 1. Biden's statement about a "Minor Incursion" by Russia into Ukraine (like bloodless illegal take over of Crimea during Obama's rule) must have encouraged Putin even more. Also consider the proven fact that Biden got millions from Russia and China, our enemies. None of this would have or could have happened under Trump. Don't blame Trump, i blame Obama and Biden, Bush, and Clinton, none of whom did much to stop Putin like Trump did...

I would disagree that the war in Ukraine will weaken Russia militarily. Just look at the vast level of incompetence and tons of critical mistakes made by the Russian army. That would have been the force NATO would face in a potential war. Now Russia has the opportunity to learn, grow and correct their outdated military doctrine against a NATO trained force, witch they have already begun to do. Not to mention the many veterans with extensive battlefield experience they are gaining. Even with only 1/3 their pre-war material stockpile they would be a more fearsome foe to fight now, than when the war began.

The Russians are a different breed. I remember early on in the conflict hearing an intercepted call of a Russian soldier talking to his wife. He was telling her about the looting and about his colleagues who where shooting civilians . He described the shooting of a 13 year old girl who was running away and was shot in the back and killed. His wife simply didn't react only to say don't forget our daughter is starting school and needs a new laptop. I will never forget it,it was chilling. Slava Ukraini.
