The issue is the financial restrictions vs practical skill based restrictions it takes to be a licensed pilot. Plenty of people who are skilled enough to be pilots can not do it over financial restrictions, yet plenty of wealthy people who are not skilled nor disciplined can easily get a pilot's license after paying enough to get through the minimal tests and quals. We see it constantly in general aviation with mishap investigations where licensed pilots with limited time and quals do something stupid and get themselves and their passengers killed. Money can buy ones the pilot's license but can not buy the skill, discipline and ability to admit one made a mistake(ie inadvertant IFR) to be an actual pilot

Flying cars will have to be automated or be able to take over ASAP. Which actually should be easier than self driving cars. Less stuff in the air as far as obstacles. Yet seriously. Ford could have changed the way we see flight if history if he had his way. Ford definitely for all his flaws did try building a better future that did not involve pleasing stock holders.

I think I've got the picture. Aviation is like having drinks with you: #1 You call the shots. - #2 Reaching the service ceiling could be possible. #3 In spite of you doing your best giving good advice - not following the directions and using common sense - the outcome could be chrashing in a micro cell... 4# flying low and fast has its perils... bird strikes could be a problem. You might not be sure of what hit you. Later upon inspection trying to reconstruct the events. You feel blessed being relative unscaved. Even when the details are obscured - the bird has left an impression. #5 enjoying wild life is great - but there's a time and place for everything! I could be wrong being a layman - using a laymans terms using a somewhat superficial language and understanding. I try to use my words careful and within the context. However I've learned the hard way - just getting out of the house I'm already in trouble... Waiting for the wife getting ready to go - I could be tempted to watch YT and commenting. The wife looks at the clock giving me this scary look saying: "STOP GOOFING AROUND! We're late.." I'm eager to comply - However trying to tell you read her loud and clear by saying "I'm ready for a quickie..." I would have thought it was evident - I WERE ready for a quick departure! She never ceases to amaze me. Probably why I'm still fond of her. She's far better at multitasking than me. She's way better at giving directions than me. I'm not always sure of why she's giving me directions. But it's a helping hand keeping me out of trouble being concerned for my health and safety. I'm surprised by the similarities between marriage and aviation. You're not alone - why playing by the book and unwritten rules makes sense. Failing to observe them will be having consequences...

That's exactly what I thought. There are plenty enough idiots driving around on the road, and if you make a mistake, you usually can only get so far off the road. The freedom of 2 dimensions is more than enough for morons. Also, when a car breaks down, it usually iust.. rolls to a stop. If an airplane breaks down, you are either screwed or about to be screwed if you cannot find a landing zone fast.

With a lot of scientists and inventors it's not about should we but more about can we. Some people have great minds, but terrible foresight or morals.

Down here you can't simply go around most traffic, nor can you see what is ahead of you beyond a useless few seconds away. Up there you don't have to share a lane and can see traffic for miles and miles in any direction... It would take every person who has ever lived in the last hundred thousand years to come back to life and start flying before the sky even begins to get congested.

​@@XiaolinDraconiswith hundreds if not thousands of vehicles in your general vicinity and moving in 3 dimensions, it is impossible for a human to keep track of everything. Having a few dozen flying cars in a city is viable. Once the average person can buy a flying car, rush hour would result in more carnage than a firefight in a war zone. As mentioned at the end of the video, computer control is an absolute requirement for wide adoption of flying cars.

@@johnbennett1465 20 minute drives turn into 5 minute flights. There would be less traffic in the air than we have on the ground even if twice as many people were flying as we have driving currently. You would also have thousands of extra lanes.

​@@Calvito-I think people don't because batteries are prohibitively expensive. Takes about $1500 to get enough power and like 10 minutes flight time. That cost also scales up poorly. But it IS doable if you can waste a few grand.

It's harrowing enough going out on the roads with these lunatics. The sky? Nope. The flying car concept will never work without a computerized air traffic control system that takes all control away from humans, and nobody wants that, because EGO.

The latest ones developed as "air taxis" for shorter trips can fly for hours at a time, and could charge at any location with the correct electrical connection without it or the pad needing to hold volatile fuel. They're really just VTOLs though, and designed to be automated or use remote pilots instead of being flown by person.

Have you heard of balloons and their older empty forefathers, which the latter don't exist functional yet?

If you had glide wings, odds are you would already be using them. Parachutes aren't going to be realistic either. sure, a person can land using a parachute just fine, but a vehicle weighs considerably more... you need anywhere between 5-10 human parachutes at least. And where to land? i'd hope you aren't flying over a forest, rocky terrain, bodies of water, or any urban area that is not the suburbs... There are reasons why planes don't have parachutes, even though, in theory we have all the technology needed to install them. You also have to keep in mind that due to people flying rather then using roads, the prevalence and size of roads will be significantly reduced. No, the answer to the awful experience of driving to and from work every days lies in... not using cars... as cars are the only reason our commutes are this horrendous. Legs, bikes and public transit, together with smart city planning (or rather not 5th grade city planning) is the only thing needed to turn your dreaded commutes into a quick, easy, pleasant and healthy experience.

Tell me how a parachute stops a drag car, weighing a thousand pounds and acceleration from a rocket engine. Yet they still stop. We're talking about falling, no insane extra forces. Everything else though, spot on.

@@williesnyder2899 A lot of ultralight crafts spend most of their time just gliding, it's not hard to avoid powerlines, and in most places power lines aren't even that common because smart people have them buried. Oh and even IF they crashed into you, they are called ultralight for a reason, they gonna fall apart on contact with another vehicle or a home. Top speed is also 60 mph for those, it's enough to do some damage but at a max weight of around 440lbs at 60 mph, they aren't gonna do any major damage. Nothing like a 2 ton vehicle flying around at 90 mph.

I suppose it would be just like a pre-trip inspection before a roadtrip in an RV 🤷‍♀️ Not only do I checked all fluids, air pressure/condition of all 6 tires, and lights, I need to check hitch ,safety chains, wheel straps, outside luggage compartment doors, and electric steps! Plus, ensure items/doors inside are secure. Takes some time but I do it every time I hit the road 🤷‍♀️
