At the end of the day, had the Idea of Evil (translated from Japanese, literally: "The reason/justification why evil happens" or something along those lines) not created him with the sole purpose of satisfying humanity's desire to be saved from, what can only be described as itself, Griffith would not have that collective trauma and baggage on his shoulders, responsible for guiding almost his every thought and waking moment whether he is aware of it or not. People hate Griffith, but what is most often missed is the fact that there are two parts of him. The pure part of him that genuinely wants the best for others, his friends, the part that is hurt by the death of a single boy who shouldn't even be on the battlefield, the part that came before humanity even existed in the first place, the part that he represses. Then there is the other side of him, the collective trauma and desires of humanity since its conception as a species, like a sort of mind control. Like most of us, he is actually a composite being, a ball of light wrapped in chains of darkness. We hate Griffith not because we hate him entirely as a person, but because we recognise parts of humanity, indeed parts of ourselves, hidden in the darkness, that we wish weren't there. The worst parts of what it means to be human and endure the human experience, and what a terrible experience it is. He was born to carry out a role, however imperfectly. Humanity is born tortured, goes on to torture others, wishes to be saved from that torture, creates the means to be saved, but that means will always be a warped reflection of that which created it and will itself carry out torture in some way. Guts is the opposite of this paradigm insomuch because he chose to rebel against destiny, not embrace it. Rather than be corrupted, he is able to preserve the pure part of his dual nature, staving off corruption. He is coming at things from the complete opposite angle. Griffith loved Guts so much, and also came to hate him because of that love, because he resonated with the part of him that was pure, that distracted and called him away from humanity's expectations of him, the reason why he was formed into existence in the first place. It's this internal schism that eventually drove him to insanity. I think Sephiroth might actually have been based off him as an archetype, but I'm not sure. Anyway, I suppose what I'm trying to say is, it's no bad thing that you recognise parts of yourself in Griffith. It just means you recognise what Miura is trying to say. Berserk is a commentary about the nature of humanity and the power humanity has over reality, unknowingly, as a collective, through means unseen. We have to decide whether to capitulate to humanity's expectations and be driven insane, or to break free and walk our own path, even if it hurts, even if it costs us an arm and a leg and friends we've come to care for. It's good to have a dream and pursue it. The question is, are we pursuing it for ourselves, or are we pursuing it because it's what others want of us? If it's the latter, tragedy is likely to ensue. In Griffith's case, with his own hands.
