This fascinating documentary on the great English composer, which features interviews with his biographers Michael Kennedy and Jerrold Northrop Moore, as well as musical examples from Simon Rattle and Nigel Kennedy, dates from 1984.
Note: Due to the age of this TV documentary, I am uploading it under the "Fair Use" terms and conditions employed by You Tube which I hope will be accepted!

Great documentary! You can tell the people who made it loved Elgar deeply. It's painfully sincere and I love it.

Thanks for posting this, which I saw on the big screen at Malvern in 1984 (its first showing) to mark the 50th anniversary of Elgar's death in 1934, then subsequently on television, from which I took a very imperfect videotape recording. I've long hoped that the Elgar Society/Foundation could somehow arrange for it to be reissued on DVD, but in the absence of this, having it here makes a very good alternative - Thank you! Something of a period piece now, but still a very powerful statement on behalf of this great composer and fascinating man., thanks to Jim Berrow and his team.

Glad you like it. You Tube is the perfect archive for TV documentaries of decades ago which had just one transmission but have never been seen since. You may also like to look for my latest Elgar upload, the 1st Symphony conducted by Alexander Lazarev, in what I think it a terrific performance from this splendid Russian conductor!

This is a great video from way back that initially sparked my interest in Elgar's music. He was such an amazing composer undeniably up there with Mozart and Beethoven and he wrote some of the most beautiful music you can imagine. I am currently sharing my love for Elgar's music by playing some new arrangements for violin and piano so people can appreciate the full range of his output in "Elgar Through The Years"......... Enjoy😊

Thanks a lot for uploading this. It's a precious complement to what I found on Elgar one or two years ago. It comes just IN TIME for me, so "double thanks" for uploading it NOW! :-)

Thank you for this video. It is only a pity that there is a problem with synchonisation but the music carries on. I find it interesting how dated the video is in 21st century. Time moves on

This documentary seems a waste of time. Its account of the important details about Elgar's life and work is paltry, compared to the reality. The only good part about it is the actual footage of the man.
