A powerful 200km+ solo canoe trip down the seldom-paddled Pic River in northern Ontario. Nature provided me with some touching experiences on this one--both highs and lows---but as usual, I left loving it more than ever.

Moose are not to be underestimated, especially in the rut. While I was on this trip, my friend's dad nearly lost his life to one. Long story short, his hunting party shot a bull moose with three arrows. The bull charged him, knocked him down, and then raked him with its 52" rack. His partners bravely distracted the moose and it finally fell dead from the arrows that had struck it. My friend's dad had severe blood loss causing him to temporarily lose his vision as his two hunting partners urgently worked to evacuate him. He made it to the hospital just in time for them to save his life. This is not really my story to tell, but I want to make it clear that these are not docile petting zoo donkeys. Their power is incredible so give them space and respect.

I am 68 1/2 ears old and love the earth, especially the north country. Your videos speak to me and I thank you for them from the bottom of my heart. Your words echo my thoughts. I have felt the same as you since I was a boy exploring the Boundary Waters Canoe Area and the Quetico PP. Your wisdom and insight bring tears to my eyes now. I hope we can save this planet, not for humans but for all the other creatures that have no say about their future. I have come to think we humans are a lost cause, and the last 5 years have really solidified that opinion. Yes many care, but so many more have no clue and appear to be beyond the reach of reason. I fear the ignorant will win out. Maybe a plague will take us out (or most of us) and we can do it better the second time. I can only hope. For those creatures that cannot speak for themselves. Thank you.

I agree, but the issues with our governments is they have absolutely no clue about the world around them, they care only about money n power, the level of corruption going on these passed few yrs is incredible. Maybe the WEF & WHO have the right idea, population control. Maybe not 90% but a good 50%. But we must realize that the dumbing down of society was purposeful for their gains at the detriment of nature, their green solutions are also unsustainable and they know it, but money.

One of the best way to ward off a moose is to stay right by your fire and try to make it as smoky as possible. This is what saved one of our line cutter's butt while we were surveying mining claims in 1970. He was a First Nations member and knew what to do. He stopped and lit an old dead birch stump that was just off the line on fire. The Moose got wind of the fire and left.

I really enjoy your videos and despite my intense disagreement about your proposed means and not the need to conserve nature, I will continue to support your channel, share your videos and spread the word about the great product you produce. I don’t expect what I have to say to make a dent in how you feel, but I will say I once thought along your line of thought. What changed me were two things. First, nature was here long before us and will be here long after us. The earth once had no living creatures on it and it was “nature”. If an environmental agency existed before oxygen was released into the atmosphere presumably by algae, it would have done everything it could to prevent it and there would be none of the life we see today. The moon is “nature” in its apparent barrenness. Man is never going to be above nature. What we do to the planet is as natural as what those prehistoric microbes did to the atmosphere to create the conditions for our life today. Nature is neither kind nor cruel. It just is. The question to be asked is what kind of world do we want to live in and is it in our ability to achieve. The second thing that changed me was living abroad (in China) and traveling in the developed world. I would strongly encourage you to do so. Canada and the US could become radical environmentalists tomorrow in totality and it would change nothing. Canada has nearly 40 million people and is the 2nd largest country in the world. You live in a wilderness paradise that is drop dead easy to conserve in comparison to developing countries. In contrast, China is nearly the size of Canada with 35 times the population. The pollution in China is staggering, yet they have the authoritarian government to do whatever they want. It is very easy for us to talk about consumption and reduced population, but when you live on less than a tenth of what the “poor” in the US and Canada already have, who are you to condemn other people to lives of want, starvation and no opportunities for their children? Your very ability to make these videos is predicated on consumption as you support your endeavors by monetization and selling merchandise. Your advocacy for government to solve these problems is the same cry I have had heard for 50 years to solve the issue du jour. Do you not know that government is policy prescription at the point of a gun? It is only through the development of technology that we will be able to rise to the challenges of tomorrow. Only free societies will develop that technology. Talk of throwing away your freedom so government can solve problems is a trade of the golden goose for a bag of non-magic beans. One last bit of critique, talk of too many people on the planet is dangerously conceited. How are you going to reduce the population? Who gets to live and die? Who gets to have kids and who doesn’t? Who gets to travel in the wilderness and who doesn’t? I think the best thing you can do is to continue to make your videos to show the value of preservation. Continue to point out the senseless contamination of the backcountry (leave no trace ethics) and advocate for increased usage and access. I have never liked the idea of keeping animals and zoos, but they serve as ambassadors. If every zoo was close, I don’t think it would help the cause of preserving habitat. We need to see the animals to relate to them and want to preserve them in their natural habitat. These videos serve a similar cause. Most people will never take a trip like this, but seeing it brings it to life. In conjunction with your type of passion about its value, maybe we can keep these places wild.
@tomj5062
@tomj5062 Год назад
@@LostLakes I respectfully disagree with your comments at the end of the video. Nature will outlast humans. The Earth will have ways of cleaning itself and life will flourish again when we are gone. I agree that we should try to live in harmony with nature. I think the problem is not the ordinary person but the big multinational conglomerates. It is these big factories and processing plants that are the ones who are really polluting the planet. I don't think governments are going to solve this problem. They support these big companies, give them tax breaks let them do what they want and now they are telling us it is our carbon footprint that needs to be cut. I am not buying that. If they were serious about stopping pollution they would impose restrictions on big business but they will not, That will never happen because our governments are corrupt and line their pockets with big businesses lobbying money. Instead of that, they will tell the ordinary people it is their fault and they must cut back and pay more for their goods and services. If governments solved problems the world would be getting better but have a look around, things are getting much worse. I believe it is these governments that are the problem. There has just been the biggest wealth transfer in history but these peoples greed knows no end and they seek to take more of our wealth by blaming climate change on us. It is these people that need to change, not us.

@@kjanis6150 ... You really don't seem to understand the true damage being done and still will continue to be an issue especially after we are gone from this damned rock floating through space.. It's blatant ignorance in full force. There are so many ways I could go on about this but from what you've said "probably won't put a dent in your line of thinking". Maybe start with how much plastic is really on this earth and how micro plastics are being found in humans now, starting in fetuses.. Yummy. Thanks so much Matt!! The US election affects many other countries, especially Canada. But here's what the environmental issues boil down to: if countries operate in only their own self-interest, we are all screwed. All world powers need to be united in order to steer us in the right direction. The POTUS has proven that he doesn't work well with others, is a climate change denier (a topic I intentionally omitted from the afterword because if anyone still doesn't believe the 97% of scientists who study climate, I'm not gonna try to change their minds), and is pretty much incapable of diplomacy (except he has struck up some relationships with the tyrants of the world). Do I have more faith in Biden's ability to work with others in the best interests of the planet? Yeah. Right now a good portion of Colorado and the western US is on 🔥 fire. They say the cause is under investigation...there has NOT been any lightning in Colorado to start most of them. What does that mean...a very good chance of them being man-made...either on accident or intentionally. (They have also been set in a geographical pattern.) I do understand the need to respect, care for and try to repair the planet for all who inhabit it. Overpopulation is a very big problem which needs to be responsibly addressed. Every Country on this planet needs to do their part in protecting the people, wildlife, land, air and water...or there will not be any in the future. Everything depends upon each and every one of us. In the 🇺🇸 USA, we need to stop all the negative behavior that has come to the forefront as of late. We need to come together and work together to survive.

I agree us as humans need to make a big change and sacrifice just a tiny bit of our daily comforts to truly make the earth a little more better for the generations of children to come so they can enjoy the beauty as much as us😊 thank you again and see you on the next adventure👍

Almost stopped 5 minutes in to say "You got a new net!" but decided that would have sounded snarky towards Erin. Now I'm paused at 20:00 to say I'm glad I didn't say anything earlier. That shit can happen to anybody, including me. (Yes, even me!!) I casually tossed a nice Fenwick ultralight rod and sweet Shimano reel forward in my boat and don't ask me how John, but it went boing boing clank against the gunwale and then over the side. 35 feet deep at that point. Okay back to the video. This is great so far. Your channel has become my favorite.

I'm not normally a RU-vid commenter, but I can't NOT pass along my thanks for this. High Falls, holy cow. What an incredible film. There's a lot to that idea that a rainy day outdoors is better than a sunny day at your desk and this backs it up even more. I finally finished the Quetico series a few nights ago and when you dedicated them to those of us stuck inside, it was like a tightness I didn't know I was carrying in my chest was loosened. Your videos have all been great and they've been an almost essential balm for me this year. So thank you!

Thank you so much Joshua! It really makes me glad to hear that so thanks for chiming in. Even Ontario residents were banned from camping for 6 weeks or so at the start of spring. It was killing me, so I empathize with your position. Nature is like my religion in the sense that it's the most spiritual experience in my life, and not being able to camp was like telling a devout worshiper they can't go to church. A second wave is spiking here so I really hope we're not headed back to that point! Thank you again :)

Absolutely stunning footage, love how you film and especially the drone shots really make for nice scenery of the falls. Best quote from you “The only cure for self loathing is scotch” lol. After a trip like that with bumping and grinding down the rapids is there much for repairs needed to the canoe? Im also curious about your neoprene socks, wearing them all day with wet feet in those temps does it work well and how thick of socks would you recommend? You rave about your dehydrated curry, is there chicken in it also? How do you dehydrate this to take along? Thanks again for all you do to promote and sustain our wilderness.
@LostLakes
@LostLakes 3 года назад
Thanks so much Dale!! No serious gouges, all just cosmetic scratches thankfully. I was trying hard to avoid anything catastrophic lol. The socks (3mm I think) worked well on the first couple of warmer days, but on the days that were under 10C, my feet were terribly cold. The curry's nothing fancy really, but any curry tastes amazing at the end of one of these days lol. It's just a chickpea curry with coconut milk (no meat) and I dehydrate like chili, 125F for 8-10 hours, or longer if it's packed too densely in the dehydrator
