The really sad thing is that Pokemons power creep is at a point where releasing Slaking and Regigigas with neutral abilities wouldn't even be enough to make them stand out under all the other new mons.
I will never forget the excitement I had of being able to use Regigigas in a game with no abilities, giving it a whole bunch of moves in preparation, only to be blue-balled when the slow start popup showed up. The game doesn't even have PVP in it which makes it even MORE baffling!!
The damage calculator may be wrong here but im pretty sure regigigas also has halved damage on body press as well despite it going off your defence stat which isn’t halved by slow start
Yes, this is because slow start doesn't half your attack stat. It halves the damage done when you click a physical move. Foul play and body press are physical, so it applies.
I mean it's kinda like Calyrex Ice Rider I think, you have a bulky trick room sweeper that snowballs if left unchecked. Only now with Zacian's typing and an even more generous ability.

They're not identical though and tbh it's a question of if the defensive typing and slightly better snowballing ability (activating if ANYONE goes down, not just if you take the KO) are better than the usually better stats, broken signature move and bonus shutdown of berries. In SV specifically I'd say no, particularly just because Terra lets Calyrex just become a better type to mitigate one of its biggest weaknesses. But in other formats depending on the gimmicks in play I could see a case to be made for Magearna being comparable.

That's kinda just how foul play works tbh, it's why Wo-Chien's foul play isn't weakened by its own ability for example. I didn't know about the special Z-move thing tho that's funny AF
Forgot to mention in the Magearna section that while it was legal you could run a full team of restricted mons😭. Ofc Magearna isn’t snowballing when it’s hitting into Kyogre Zacian Groudon and other dishonest mons on the same team
GameFreak finding new ways and nerfing niche situations to specifically target Regigigas never fails to make me laugh. No Rest, No protect. Even in legends he still has slow start. GF really looked at him and went. You will sit out and suffer.
With everything you mentioned about Slow Start, olus the lack of recover or anything ok on Gigas, AND Body Press being reduced too, I think Gigas is probably the most consistently nerfed mon despite already having the worst ability in the game. Which is saying something, when even Thundurus causing like 8 nerfs across the whole game still kept it good.
Something very funny abot toxic is that when used by a poison type it has not only perfect accuracy but also bypasses semi-invulnerability This includes, fly, dig, dive, phantom force and shadow force So even while your opponent isnt physically there for some reason toxic still hits when used by a poison type
A fun mechanic that I never knew until very recently: Toxic, if used by a Poison type specifically, NEVER MISSES. And when I say NEVER MISSES, I'm not just talking about Swift and Magical Leaf effects where it bypasses accuracy. It also hits during FLY, DIG, AND OTHER SEMI-INVULNERABLE MOVES.
my fav niche mechanic is that if you encore a pokémon, it uses the selected move's priority instead of the encore'd move's priority. so if you prankster encore a pokémon that selected a priority move, it gets priority with its last used move
At least in legends Arceus regigigas is a damn behemoth for the AI to take out. I can only imagine how much more ridiculous it would get without Slow Start
In a w2 nuzlocke I did once, I was in a really bad spot against Iris-my arcanine was damaged and alomomola was my only option to fight Iris' lapras, which kept spamming sing while it died to my toxic. It eventually fell, but sing landed on its last turn rendering my Alomomola alseep-but, I had been using wish to keep it healthy! Arcanine came come back in on Druddigon, healed back to full with the Wish, killed the dragon and then did enough damage to archeops to put it in defeatist and allow Alomomola to come back in and wake up. Wish unironically saved my nuzlocke, by accident.
I always love skill swap shenanigans with things like regigigas and slaking, two pokemon that could have been insanely strong in their gens if they just had a better ability rather than one intentionally nerfing them. Shout outs to Entrapment Durant, one of the funniest things you can do to an opponent who refuses to switch.
To anyone confused as to why slow start weakens foul play: Slow start doesn't half your attack stat, it halves the damage done when you use a physical move. The same happens with body press. The game doesn't care that they don't use your attack stat, it only cares that they're physical moves. This is the same reason why choice band and huge power boost body press, but eviolite fur coat and snow don't. Similar thing with foul play, if your opponent holds a choice band then you won't get a boost, but if YOU do then it'll be boosted. Also, toxic leech seed isn't viable in the campaign or link battles because you can just click razor leaf.

Wish is one of the most... Pokemon-ie of moves ever. It really highlights the importance of Switching itself, which is one of the best integration of ludonarrative features in the entire franchise. I don't even know of any other RPGs that leverages the exchange of party members even half as much. They took the "You can stuff a monster in your pocket in an instant" idea and made it something you're literally using every few moves in many, if not most games. Could we get a video about switching?
Gamefreak should make a signature version of what old leech seed scaling was. A "toxic" leech seed would be really cool. Bonus points if it's given to a pokemon that can lock the opponent in somehow, like a whirlpool or arena trap user. VGC could use always use more nuanced defensive strategies, but singles would be plagued by this.
Gotcha. New exclusive move for a DLC legendary: applies toxic and leech seed to all enemies on the field, and traps them. Bypasses types and abilities. 120 base power for balance.
You could probably make a video about how sheer force blocks not just your secondary effects, but opponent secondary effects as well, like emergency exit. Maybe paid it with other unique quirks to prevalent moves or something else, love your videos son
I would love to see a video on Gen 1. Like what if later gens kept the weird mechanics like normal not getting paralyzed by body slam, hyper beam (and it’s copies) not recharging if it gets a kill, recoil moves not dealing self damage (in Pokémon stadium) if they get a kill, leech seed and toxic using the same damage tick. Counter working on the attack of last turn if your opponent switches out
Just an idea, but if your gonna make a part 2, maybe do good as gold or hadron engine/orichalchum pulse, since they are weird because they give side boosts
Series 13 VGC was the dumbest format ever, it was amazing. Soul Heart is obviously broken but the power level of that format was insane because you could just run prankster tailwind and 5 restricteds so none of the mythicals were really that good. Although getting hit with choice scarf zeraora plasma fists into regieleki explosion was a unique trip. Another really interesting Gen 1 mechanic to look at is Bide, there’s a bunch of weird things it does, like bypassing accuracy checks, only accumulating damage from the first hit of multi hit moves, and the glitch Scott’s Thoughts recently discovered where it won’t accumulate damage if you speed tie and win that tie at least once. Also, hardly anyone understands damage rounding thresholds even though they affect every damage calculation in Pokémon to this day.
Wish is just an average JRPG healing magic skill any Healer role monster or ally can use on themselves or an ally. It just takes longer. Soul Heart is just the same Skill Komashura in the Yo-Kai Watch series has always used. Komashura has always been pretty good in meta to boot. I made an essay on this one but Enma Awoken in Yo-Kai Watch 3 is the Slow Start gimmick except it is actually viable.

Man! Magearna’s Suicide Squad is one of my favorite gimmicks in Pokémon Lead Magearna and a partner with Explosion or Final Gambit I Protect with Magearna + Self Destruct And then I bring my Final Gambit In the last slot I use Urshifu Dark as it clears the ghost types with a Black Glasses set And it’s physical perfect for Special Walls If they bring back the mithycal Pokémon format I might even optimize the team with Alolan Golem because it packs electric Self Destruct and can Earthquake on Steel types
one thing that is a bit silly with regigigas in doubles is using skill swap medicham to give pure power to regigigas while removing the downside of slow start.
Biggest thing with soul heart that doesnt apply to the others, megearna doesnt need to cause the knockout, status or an ally finishing them off is enough
You didn't mention Substitute! That mechanic is so fucking confusing Showdown has to give you an essay every time you hover over it and what Status moves are blocked with substitute has changed so often of the generations. Seriously, go look at the graph they have on Bulbapedia. It's crazy that such a central move is never talked about how weird it is. For example Mimic is blocked in gen 3 and 4 ONLY but not 1,2 and 5 onwards. Sound based moves only started bypassing Sub in gen 6 except perish song which has always worked, and starting in Gen 5, sub blocks transform
I want magearna taking over a meta man why did theu have to arbitrarily divide legendaries and mythicals just based on wether they were event pokemon or not half of them aren't even event only pokemon now
Toxic/leech seed is amazing for casual play, and is what I use on my Venusaur all the time in gen 1. Hell, i just love using it in every gen, but still.
I got pretty close to high ladder in uber doubles with metagross explode and earthquake paired with a weakness policy magearna and a tera fairy on it to also abuse sludge wave tornadus. sadly I tried running trick room but the speeds just weren't low enough so I'd consistently get swept by torkoal teams. I actually first figured out the idea on accident with a random doubles match where I had magearna and fortress and it worked to perfection in that match.
I don't even play competitive but I am so tired of watching the same teams fight each other, and I need official tournaments to focus on non-legendary pokemon...
@@ElectricWindGirlFriend it might just be my super sensitive ears, or the audio balance got randomly fucked up again for some reason my pc does randomly reset what I do in the settings.
“Mechanically simple game” wut Wolfey made a short about how complex just the number of possible game states each turn is I don’t think there’s a world where Pokémon is a mechanically simple game
my argument for it is that pokemon is designed for little kids to understand. the idea of "move or switch" is insanely basic and even a lot of the moves are simple too.
the basic mechanics of mons are really simple to understand. the idea of "attack with a move, use a status move that's easy to describe, or switch" is super simple on the surface
are these really any weirder than any other whack mechanic in competitive pokemon? The whole game is weird by the standards of like basically any competitive game, which there really aren't very many even remotely similar to pokemon.
