the 225 and 180hp engines are very different. they changed about everything to get it to 225hp. shorter intake, other turbo, better con rods, 2 intercoolers for the turbo, more oil nozzles to squirt onto the piston etc. theres a whole list of differences between 180 vs 225hp to look through. although the basic block and head design might be similar, theyre still very different

In the mid 80's, I worked in Borneo. A colleague had a Starion. I borrowed it over a weekend. As I recall, I don't think I was very impressed with the way it drove. I wasn't sure whether the turbo wasn't working, or I just wasn't driving it hard enough, but It didn't seem to have the amount of get up and go that the looks would imply. It did look wonderful, though. They still do , actually.

The name also harkens back to the NSU Prinz TT - which was something of a Golf GTI of the 1960s. Seeing that gorgeous interior again sure brings back some memories. I had a black FWD TT Coupe back from 1999 til about 2004 or so. It was a very early production car that had left the factory without a rear spoiler and without ESP. But it was one of the cars that got those things retro-fitted by the factory in response to that series of crashes that semi-ruined the TT's reputation initially. I loved that car to bits and it was the first "cool" car I ever had. It was super-reliable, lots of fun to drive and surprisingly practical and reasonably comfortable. I took my GF on a 1,000 km trip to France in it and we didn't have to travel light or anything. That trunk is plenty spacious for a little sports-car and you can always drop the rear seats if you need more room. And when I sold it with about 115,000 km on the clock, the whole car, and especially the interior, still looked as good as new. There weren't even any real wrinkles, let alone nicks or tears, in the leather on the driver-seat. Later in life I got to drive the TT Mk II for about a month or so and while it was a better car overall, it just didn't feel as special as the Mk I. Probably because it lacked all those quirky details in the interior that made the original TT so unique.

Even at 6'2", it's just sit down and in, stand up and out. I....... still agree with Mrs. Wizard though about the Cube. :P Answer to the question: One car I remember really not fitting well in was a 1993 Cavalier. Seat didn't go back for enough, roof needed to be at least 2" higher. Any bump and my head was hitting the roof. Fortunately, friend just asked me to drive for him once in it.

My TT is a 2005 I bought in 2007 off a lease with only 14k miles, but half the price of the car new. It’s been the lowest cost of ownership of any car I’ve ever had and it’s still going strong today. I opted for the naturally aspirated 3.2L 6 because the car really needed that extra oomph and torque. Mine had Quattro and the DSG- the DSG gearbox combo with that narrow V6 made this car bullet proof. The DSG simply will NOT allow you to mistreat the gearbox or the engine, and as a result I have had no issues with the power train at all. I have no problem getting in or out of the TT, and I’m 67. I find it to be the perfect height. And it has a genuinely useful load capacity… i have even brought home lumber and furniture in the TT. As to the Cube. It looks like a cross between the box and better looking car was shipped in and a microwave oven, only it doesn’t have a popcorn preset button. A what is with all the Cup Holders in the front of that car? I counted SEVEN in my friend’s Cube.

The Cube's seating is exactly why the Scion XB was so popular with an older crowd, the opposite of what Toyota was trying to achieve. However, when I was in Okinawa the Toyota BB was super popular among those of us who were allowed to have cars (I wasn't one of them). You could fit 5 Marines in them with plenty of legroom, you could fit a ton of luggage in it. It's a perfectly sized car for the size of the roads over there. I'd buy one now that I'm 27 because I know better, but at 19 I thought they were ugly.

Good vid on the TT - now, what about the Mitsubishi Starion or Conquest TSI next to it...???

Brit here: Whilst TT might evoke a little more here, it didn't stop us laughingly calling it the titty, and it garnered a reputation as a "hairdressers car" as the years rolled on.

I got that from Top gear where they used to call it a hairdresser car Jeremey Clarkson did

This car, along with the mazda miata, new beetle, minis, etc fall into the "cute" category and were bought by a lot of women. still didn't stop me from buying one

@@thelastmemphian I have much more respect for a man who is comfortable enough with his masculinity to drive something like an MX-5 or a TT than someone who needs a V8 penis extension Mustang. And I'm not just saying that so I get a discount at the hairdressers.

@@BUEAU It's a cracking wee machine, I'm just making an observation that the absurdity of the name given didn't pass us by even with a historical context. Silly will trump logical 8 times out of ten.

What's the story behind that red mitsubishi starion in the background? I know those rims and that fastback. 😂 Good old memories from the 90's.

Wizard, are we going to see a video on that red Starion/Conquest in the near future? I had one about 20 years ago I always thought the car was ahead of its time!

I owned one of these, I really enjoyed it, after 21 years it still looked gorgeous and mechanically like new (yes I spent hrs mending it)

Had this for 3 years, quattro version as well. Now I have a 2000' S3, same engine but 210hp. So I can sit my kids in the back. A nice rewiew from the Wizzard. This car has been called many names: - hair squinshy (I hope I spelled that right) product for men by Jeremy Clarkson - pocket rocket by Mike Brewer (Wheeler dealer show) - an now the best of all - A cute little sucker by Mrs Wizzard.

I once drove an Audi TT Abt STW Edition which was 1 of 6 ever made. If I remember correctly it had the same engine but tuned up to around 300hp. That thing was a breeze to drive with its Quattro manual drive train. Just awesome.

I actually own one, my friends own them too. We tune them and get stupid amounts of power out of them. I'm also 6'3" haha

I also have a TT quattro 225. Mine has only intercooler, tune, exhaust, coils and good tires. The car is quite powerful with just that, and it turned very very well.

I bought one exactly like this TT for my wife in 2002. We had it for four years. She loved it! She now has a newer VW Beetle convertible, but the TT was a bit classier. The interior is extremely high quality, better than most cars in the market.

I used to tell people they were named after me when they first came out (🤣). I cannot wait for you to also talk about the Red Mitsubishi Starion (that’s what we called them in Australia 🇦🇺) behind you.
