It has been so frustrating how little information exists on this. This video is the first time I've seen any conclusive information regarding this "no light of death" and has definitely saved me a lot of time trying to get my system running on a PC or bench power supply. Such classics as "just re-seat the power supply, works every time" all the way to "you need to re-ball your RSX and CELL" came up constantly, but this is extremely helpful! Gives me some hope at least. If I get the system back up and running, I'll owe you big time. Update 1: Tried to get to the LED diagnosis mode and the system will not power on in the fantest mode. The 5V circuit off the PSU seems to go dead until being plugged back in, suggesting perhaps it has entered a failsafe mode. I'm lucky enough to have lab equipment on hand, so I will do a load test on the 12V rail next. With an electronic load, I can set the current accurately. The unit is rated for up to 16A so below that, the voltage should not drop in any distinct way. I already tested the voltage out and it's showing 11.8V... seems low already. I might be lucky and have a PSU fail on my hands. If my load test shows no clear drop, I will go ahead with your advice to get codes off the syscon. Update 2: Did more digging. I measured the resistance between the 12v inputs on the main board and it showed around 1 Ohm… thought I did this test before but must have missed something. On finding this, I began the tear down and found that with the Blu-ray drive removed, the resistance was up in the KOhm range so I tried to start it… worked! I need to investigate the drive further… not sure if that part is repairable but I’m very happy with today’s work! Interestingly, I re-seated the Blu-ray drive (2504b model so the ribbon is below the drive) and it turned on. Put the console back together and it is dead again… not expected but I didn’t spend any time to figure out why.
Very very interesting read, I need to get some of that lab equipment you mentioned. So I would assume it only works without the BD Drive plugged in if I am reading that correctly. Very good work with the diagnostics on that unit. I think personally the BD Drive just has an internal short or the voltage line on the BD Drive is somehow shorted only when the drive is plugged in. That or maybe the BD Drive is somehow shorting it, try assembling the console without the BD Drive and see if the issue persists, if it does then there is something shorting on the motherboard when the top shell is screwed down.
@@Nascar1243 I managed to fix my console today! Turned out to be fully my fault too and there is no major hardware fault. Turns out I previously misrouted the fan cable between the ir shield and the power supply body and it had over time broken through the insulation on the 12v line, probably due to vibration from the fan or something… I must have dislodged the cable when removing the Blu-ray drive last time hence the misdiagnosis there. Makes sense why putting the lid back on broke it again last time. I put some electrical tape around the fan cables and was sure to route them correctly and it’s all good now! Quite the adventure. I still owe your video to my jump off point trying to run the LED diagnostic mode, so thank you!
I liked this, Nascar. Sony should have indeed done the secondary binary when they first made the system. That could have made diagnosing what was actually wrong with other's systems much easier.
my Ps3 slim did the no light of death but a few seconds after that it beeped at me 3 or 4 times so I let it sit for some time then turned it back on and well it has worked fine after that.
Yours was overheating, I was able to get the same results on another slim when I was testing something and left it on, got 3 long beeps when it overheated. NoLOD does not have any beeps, you will still have a syscon error code
It isn't too bad at all, just 3 simple wires, but I would recommend practicing on dead boards, doesn't have to be syscon specifically, just practice soldering to pads in general before attempting it.
@@protoyeen honestly I have somewhat shaky hands even though it may not seem like it, the pads are bigger than you’d think but definitely practice a bit on some pads on other consoles or that ps3 with different pads
my PS3 Slim 2501b is currently at a repair shop with this exact issue. It has been sitting in its box for 7+ years with no resolution, and this happened just a week after its warranty expired, sony didnt give a shit about helping me. I hope the technicians that have my PS3 know about the syscon before attempting a reflow or reball.
That’s the unfortunate part too, I talked to Fasttech which is a repair shop on RU-vid (not sure if you have heard of them) and they did those stupid videos so I thought I would correct them, went back and forth in emails and eventually they blocked me after discussing syscon with them and they did nothing, they left their dangerous guides up and don’t care, whatever they can do to make money I guess
@@snydder1771 you could see if Computer Booter would be willing to fix it, he doesn’t work on slims often but if it is an easy fix then he can try to repair it

the LED Diag Mode is just geniues and w move from sony, i wonder if some other companies have done something close to it too, also looking back my friend has the 30xx or 31xx model and i think he got the No light of death, il try to help him diagnosing this issue cause when he sent it to repair they've said it's the CELL faillure (could be money grabbing)
I have a 3001a model that has this problem except it’s takes about 3-5 to power off. I have a 2501a with a similar problem and I also have a special edition grand turismo 5 blue ps3 slim that has a Bluetooth problem and been wanting to get it fixed 😢
That’s because the no light of death is like the yellow light of death, it’s a general hardware fault, and the RSX is likely not the culprit, without the syscon codes there is no way of knowing what’s causing the problem or a way to pinpoint a possible area
@@clarencioo3040 that was just an example in my case, 2040 by the looks of it seems to be 12v power related, so it can be anything on the 12v rail. Personally I also think it replaced a 3001 error on the slim and super slim
@@Nascar1243 I have something to ask, I have just fixed the error 2040 on a PS3 Slim CECH3000 with KTE-001 Board by adjusting the potentiometer on the PSU, it seems fine but there's new error 2130/2131 or 2030/2031 even if it's working and upon testing for 6 hours with rest in between the PS3 shutdowns itself again. And then I've checked for new errors got the error 2130/2131 which is the Thermal Sensor according to the wiki (Don't know if it's the diode inside the CPU/GPU Chip or the thermal IC????). Btw, my temps are normal 57-62°C stable at 34% fan speed in TLOU based on WebMAN during the tests. Should I give up and let this rest in peace or this is still fixable? 😅
Nice video. Since 2019 my PS3 has been showing the error: no light of death. When it first happened I waited a few minutes and then it started working again for about 5 minutes and then the error came back. I left the PS3 unplugged for about 3 weeks and it worked again for approximately 2 months and then the error returned. Is it a problem with the PSU? Edit: I've been doing this ever since. I play on it for a few months, the problem returns, I unplug it for a month and then I use it normally again until the error returns. I've been doing this cycle since 2019.
It can be anything on the motherboard that will cause your issue, you will need to grab the error log to see what’s going on, if you have a 21xx, 25xx, or 30xx, you can use the video I linked in the description called LED Diag mode. That will grab the last known syscon code. If you can get the console to boot use the syscon tutorial video I also linked and you can grab the full error log.
@@Nascar1243 Thank you for your help. I have performed the LED test and noted the syscon error code: GGGR-GGRR-GGGG-GGGR = 1301. On the PS3 developer wiki site it says: "Has been reported in a console where the CPU die was chipped during a delid attempt gone wrong. The console displayed a Green Light of Death (GLOD) and shutting down periodically with A0801301. On another console 1301 occurred after both the CPU and RSX were reballed. The reball of cell likely failed, or damaged it. On a third console it was reported after nearly every chip on the Motherboard was heat gunned. They probably didn't achieve the necessary temperatures to reflow the CPU, and if they did they probably damaged it by using too much heat. In all 3 cases the CPU was damaged or heated in some way." I've never modified my motherboard either heated it, could it be the thermal paste? The console is from late 2010.
Does anyone know this fix? My ps3 slim after playing for like an hour the screen becomes blank no audio, no video and when i try to turn off the ps3 slim using the power button it beeps twice and stays on green and does not turn off. Only way is by ripping the power cable 😢😢
Could be a bga fault, is there a history of drop damage to the console? If so that’s possible, you can try putting pressure on the top of the console to the right of where the bd drive is, not too much, but that would kind of be a confirmation in a way

Does resetting the PS3 NOLOD sometimes work? maybe my PS3 is just corrupted. Before this happened, I successfully pirated the game for the first time to the PS3, and we played it for like 2 hours. Later at night, I was just playing around with MultiMan a bit and transferring the games from USB to internal storage. After it was done, I turned it off normally like any other day, and a day later, it just happened😭. Well, maybe it's not corrupted and not the only problem with my PS3. It has an internet problem. Maybe that could be the reason??. Sometimes PS3 internet is not working; it always shows a DNS error code. You can't sign on to your PSN account or watch Netflix or RU-vid. While the other device we have still works. We dindt let it fix to the game store cause its expensive😅. It so unfortunate that it just got broke down when i finally pirated my ps3😞like imagine the games im going to play😭 that would be so fun and i was so excited to play before this was happening. Im not smart with techs so I'm not goanna fix it and definitely won't go to the store to fix it because they probably won't fixed it Aswell but maybe in the future i will fix it :D
There is no way to reset it, it’s an error meaning it is preventing the system from booting up, and until the error is fixed (unless it’s just an error due to a crash) then it will not boot back up, check syscon error logs and see if you have any

Right now the best model to get seems to be the 2101A or 2001A as they have the more reliable wifi/BT Chip. Or the 65nm phat models but for the 2001A and 65nm phats tokins can fail but not super common. On 25xx and newer they have a wifi chip that can burn out and make your system unusable.
My ps3 just doesn’t even turn on. I have 3001B model and after 7 months of it not working I plugged it in and got a red light for 3 seconds then back to no light whatsoever. Would this still be considered the NoLOD or is this a psu issue?
That’s going to be a worse issues, likely that is the “No Standby” issue which can be caused by a blown Wifi/BT module, it can short the 5v rail. But unfortunately when that standby goes out so does your syscon so syscon diagnostics goes out the window

As it should, just know that depending on your model if you have issues and you get a NoLOD it won’t always be a psu fault or overheating, just do syscon diagnostics and you’ll be good to go
You know what the weird thing is, I think my cecha01 ps3 has the no light of death. I remember getting scammed on Mercari on that ps3 and I took it up to a repair place. That’s when I found out it was penny tricked. Oh yea the ps3 was a literal jet engine.
The A01 doesn’t have the no light of death. The only time I have ever seen it on an A01 was from a genuine power supply fault but a penny trick wouldn’t kill that. Still not ideal but they don’t have that no light of death, not the same as the slim and super slim anyways
@@succ5666 if the power supply was shorted out or completely dead on the 5v rail then no it wouldn’t as the syscon relies on the 5v rail. If the 5v rail has an issue then syscon will not throw a YLOD, I’ve had a psu go bad and have the same issue you are describing, it didn’t throw a syscon code, it was just caps that went bad in the psu but I wouldn’t recommend replacing them as it’s obviously dangerous to do so
