PS3s are so weird at so many levels. Given the shaky launch, tons of different hardware revisions, and different ways to fix said hardware, it's a love / hate relationship with the thing that anyone who has ever had one gotta have XD. I have been enjoying my PS3 Slim 2501 for around 3 years now, bought it with a PS Move kit just because I love motion controls and wanted to see other games with it, but I barely used the controllers because there are just so many other good games, that sadly have no support for the Move. But I was so paranoid with my system, given that it was always loud. Repasted it around 5 times already, sweated over a CELL delid, that turned out successful, but now I'm pondering if could ever successfully delid the RSX as well. Everyone says it's easier, but I just can't bring myself to put force under the IHS to pry it open. With the CELL, I just had to cut the glue and be careful not to go too deep, but I just can't with the RSX... It's summer here in Brazil, 30°~34°C almost everyday, which brings my PS3 to 64°C CELL ~ 68°C RSX at 40~50% fan speed after 15 minutes of GTA V (MAX 68°C, 34% fan minimum). Seeing the RSX there so "cool" in your maybe faulty unit just makes me ponder even more XD. I know the CELL was always much hotter in the FAT, and also the cooling solution for the RSX is much, much better, but still...

If it is a 2501 model you are talking about then delidding the RSX is not possible in the way you do it with a 90 or 65, the adhesive is a lot stronger.

@@Nascar1243Yes, that's the issue. I've seen it's possible, but I don't have a heat gun, or the will to jam a gillette razor blade in the corner and hammer it in XD.

@@ClaytonCLF tbh I wouldn’t bother delidding a slim unless it’s a 2001A, it will be fine long term

Don't compare the slim's RSX to the 90nm ones. It is normal to be hotter, it's a smaller dye after all. It's perfectly normal to hit 70C under load. I know you want your console to run cooler, believe me, I do too, but don't get too obsessed about it. Just set the fan in Webman to auto on 68C and enjoy it. I even ran mine without the lid and managed to drop like 5 to 7C, although I don't recommend it because I don't know if the power supply gets the proper airflow like that. Just make sure you leave plenty of room behind the console so the hot air can escape.

@@vdochev actually I’ve had 40nm and 28nm get hotter than some 90nm, they will all reach roughly the same temps, but as the processors became more efficient they made the heatsinks smaller as a byproduct to cut costs

I do not do customer repairs, if you are in America you can send it to Studio Halabi or Console King on eBay. Or you can send it to Computer Booter

I really want to do a Frankenstein mod myself some day. I will need a pre-heater and BGA rework station first, but I do plan on getting those tools anyway. I am having a really weird issue with a PS3 Slim that I have been fixing up. I am wondering if you have any information that could help me. It's a 2001a Slim - I got it off Ebay in pieces with a broken DB ribbon connector on the motherboard and a broken cmos battery. I was able to replace the motherboard connector (used one off a daughter board) and battery holder. I then used a Teensy to patch the firmware and get noBD CFW running. Remarried the daughter board and was able to boot into normal CFW. Now I am having a weird issue with the BD drive. It's constantly ejecting and will not take discs. Here's what I have done so far: 3 Different daughter boards - Same issue with all 3. 3 Different Optical readers - Same issue with all 3. 2 Different Motor Sensor boards - Same issue with both (third one on the way). Right now I have the system working but I disconnected the motor so I don't have to listen to the drive ejecting over and over. The optical reader will move around and the motor works just fine on startup. I've tested the connection on the sensor board, all 3 seem to be working properly. Manually inserting a disc works and I can turn the gears to bring a disc in. The drive seems to be working, but for some reason it's just stuck trying to eject and won't take discs. Is there any hope that this issue has been worked on and fixed before? If not I am fine keeping this system working with just running games of the HD + CFW, but I was really hoping to get the DB working as well to have a complete system.

By optical readers do you mean the laser or the entire disc drive? If you mean the entire disc drive then it’s a board level issue. But if you mean the laser then there is still hope, I think it could be an issue with the actual drive itself like it needs to be reset or the actual disc sensor needs replaced where it can detect if a disc is being inserted or not but you said you replaced that by the sounds of it so that can be eliminated.

@@Nascar1243 Honestly I've tried replacing everything multiple times. Not the entire disc drive, but the only stuff that hasn't been replaced is Plastic + springs, which all function normally. So all the ribbon cables, boards, electronics, laser, motors... etc.... The plastic parts and springs are all working properly. Having tried 3 different daughter boards all acting the same way makes me think it can't be that... but the weird thing is I cannot re-marry two of the boards. It fails at write p block. But that might be just 2 having 2 defective boards. I do have a third sensor board coming to test, but I don't have any hope it's that as the two I have seem to be testing fine with multimeter. I have a feeling it's something on the motherboard and not the Drive daughter board, but I just don't even know where to start to fix it. Is it the south bridge or some controller chip on the motherboard maybe? I tested in diode mode and all the caps near the ribbon connector seem fine.

@@mattunwin the drive daughterboard shouldn’t be causing that issue and the remarry issue is a different concern, usually can come from bad erk dumps and whatnot. I don’t work with a lot of disc drives so that’s out of my league, especially on slims as I don’t see many of them go wrong. You can try in the Computer Booter discord server and see as there are a lot of people there with experience as well

@@Nascar1243 Thank you I will check them out. Do you have any advice for getting a good erk dump? It seems like it's dumping just fine to the SD card, but usually the file reads as 1KB.
