Hi all, a quick review of the Pulsar Thermion 2 XP-50, Thermal Imaging Riflescope. A quick review of the specs and a lot of in field footage to show you what to expect as well as some tips I picked up along the way after putting it through its paces. It is a great scope so if you are in the market for a thermal scope then be sure to check it out. There is a lot of options when it comes to thermal hunting rife scopes in Australia so get all the information but in the end make up your own mind as what suits your needs and budget.

Mr B- could you give some advice on rifle selection- I have a mild recoiling rifle with a varmint barrel, it too heavy for a walk around gun, but I have in the back of my mind it may be suitable as a dedicated night vision/thermal rifle. Would a heavier rifle be a benefit or a hindrance when shooting from a tripod ?

Hi there Hardy, when shooting from a good tripod I have found that the rifle weight isn't of major concern. I use the BOG Deathgrip and a Tikka T3X Hunter in 223 and 243 for foxes. A heavier gun might benefit the tripod, weight helps stability but we are talking grams not kilos in the big scheme of things. But I am also always looking for an excuse to buy another rifle too :)

Really don't know what to think/do. I have the xq50 on order but I have the option to upgrade to the xp50. I am a coyote and fox hunter so I don't know to opt for the xq for the magnification or get the xp50 and make it work. You have any input on my situation

Hi Jeremy, both will do the job, I went the XP50 for the wider field of view, I shoot rabbits at 30m and foxes out to 250m. This means I need a lower base mag. If you say well I never shoot below 80-100ish meters then XQ everyday of the week. Higher base mag will give you a narrower field of view, check out my "Night Tech XD-50 II vs the XD-50 Pro II" video. It shows you a 640 vs 384 sensor and different base mags on both. Might help you visualize the differences.

@@MrBHuntingDownUnder I'm just starting on my journey of assessing which thermal scope might be best. Had a look through a mate's Pulsar Trail and like it. I already own a Pulsar Digisight 970lrf and love and very much trust the Pulsar brand. Briefly owned an ATN daynight scope and thought it was useless and poor customer service put me off that brand entirely But I am also interested in the new iAiming brand and the Rico stuff too, the problem being that I don't know how to evaluate and choose as I am very untechnical and don't understand the terminology. I'd love a unit with laser range finder, picture in picture and that will hold 2 or 3 zeros. Video recording totally unnecessary. What would you suggest? If I can identify and shoot out to 250mt, perhaps 300 at a stretch I'd be more than happy Cheers

@teach eng, A range finder really limits your options, trail 2 and iRay are your best bets. iAiming I have honestly had nothing to do with and I also don’t know anyone with one which makes me hesitant to recommend. They will all do multiple zeros and pip but the menu and firmware on the pulsar is better than iRay but pulsar are also more expensive. I would say, don’t buy anything sight unseen, get it in your hands, have a look, with them in your hands your decision will be a lot easier. The other option is get an Range finder in your spotter then you don’t need it in the scope! :)

@@MrBHuntingDownUnder Thanks so much for your thoughts very much appreciated and very helpful Your idea of rangefinder in spotter makes a lot of sense All best, David

Thanks for a great honest review Mr B. Completely agree with your comment to Teach, a laser range finder on the spotter. I’m new to the thermal market and been doing a hell of lot of research. Pulsar Thermion 2 XQ50 or XP50 is at the forefront with a Axion XQ38 spotter. Avoiding units out of China so it’s a no on the Rico. Do you know anything about GSCI Ti Gear? A fair bit dearer but looking closely at the GSCI s675, they’re a well respected Canadian brand. Not a lot of bells and whistles nut supposedly very good gear. Thanks again
