Day in the life of a plumber
In todays episode I call back on a job I started last year to get some second fixing done. The water wouldn't isolate completely so I had to snatch it.
As always, thanks so much for watching, all the support is greatly appreciated

Anyone coming into this line of work. Old or new. Apprentice or served time (not Prison) 😄 Tom should be recognised more on RU-vid. He is way beyond any other you will see on plumbing and heating channels.

I have never seen this situation with a Company stop tap and meter inside a single occupancy domestic dwelling, I will admit I live in a Rural area, but everywhere in my area, both my village and surrounding ones, also our local town, the meters are fitted next to the company stop tap underground outside the property, I have had to do a snatch on more than one occasion when the customers own indoor stop tap was ceased and the company one wouldn’t turn off, I personally do not understand why we don’t just do away with stop taps and have full bore lever valves instead as they’re fully WRAS approved Kudos to you Tom for using full bore lever ball valves, and not restricted ballofix ones, though even those are preferable on a tap installation to none, and I have found many such poorly designed installations, I make it a habit whenever installing to fit the lever valves whilst I have the water supply off, that’s how I was taught, and I often wonder what people are taught in Technical College now, I do know that in at least some cases students practical work is only assessed using a dry pressure pump, the problem with this being that they’re work won’t hold Water Literally 😮 I now work as a site maintenance manager for a large primary school trust, and due to the age of the buildings I have encountered many ceased stop taps, generally in very awkward situations where access is restricted by existing immovable kitchen equipment making access for tools very difficult or even impossible 😢, the more I do the job, the more obvious it becomes that there is a serious skills gap in the contracting industry, far too much bodge it and run, things that would have turned my old governor puce !, and which constantly frustrate Me ! - Julie

Internal water meters are quite common where the water supplies to properties are shared. There are a lot of terraced houses around me where the water feeds multiple properties so the only place the meter can go is inside. This is optional though so it's only at the house holders request, I don't think water boards really like them inside either. Lever valves are the best I think, thanks for watching Julie

Great video Tom! Nice pipework under the sink- I think lever valves are much better than stopcocks as they are much easier for people to use. That small pipe bender looks great; found some old bending springs in the attic the other day - not used ones in decades and still remember the struggle that sometimes happened in getting the bloody things out!

Nice under sink plumbing Tom, but my OCD went into overdrive with how you left that tap. Surely, it's got to be front facing and not on an angle.
@PlumbLikeTom
@PlumbLikeTom 3 месяца назад
I did think that at the time, the only reason I did it at the angle was I thought it was easier to turn the cold side on, it's an easy one to sort though if the customer isn't happy and I need to go back to finish other bits off, thanks for watching mate

Don’t really understand the stoptap vs lever valve argument, after all, water companies use quarter turn valves in their water meter housings in the street.

Those water meters inside the property should be illegal, because you can't do any work/change the piping without notifying the water company (which they'll tell you they need to send their engineers out to do the work or else you're at breach of contract for touching their equipment and they'll make a tidy profit on it) and then you have the situation where you have pipe in the road belonging to the water company, pipe from the curb to the house belonging to you and then that short bit of pipe in your property belonging to the water company again. The fucking state of our infrastructure because we allowed Australian and Saudi investment firms own our plumbing and run it at a profit is beyond me. Tidy job by the way.
@PlumbLikeTom
@PlumbLikeTom 3 месяца назад
That's the only advantage of being an approved plumber is that you can self certify this work, I did still ask permission but they don't need to come out after to inspect, I do agree they are a pain though and ideally new mains should be laid for each property, thanks for watching

There is a reason for using a stop cock, it has a jumper in it to stop backflow into the mains water supply. I wish that plumbers on u tube would stop using them on mains coming into property. Ot is showing Joe blogs the wrong information. Water regulations state that the mains coming into a property needs to be a stop cock with drain off. Lever valves do not have backflow prevention, being wras approved is irrelevant.
@PlumbLikeTom
@PlumbLikeTom 3 месяца назад
I have been told by my water board that lever valves are now fine to fit, I have numerous inspections a year by the water authority and this question has been asked multiple times. The new meters have check valves inside so it's irrelevant what type of valve gets fitted. This is why sure stops and valves like that can be used instead of a traditional stop tap. I will ask the question again on my next inspection, but as far as I'm aware, lever valves are fine, I will update this if I'm wrong as I would never intend to give wrong information
@philchambers2643
@philchambers2643 3 месяца назад
That may be ok in your area which would be an idea to let viewers know. My understanding after 20 plus yrs is that the stop valve at first point of entry is the be BS1010 of screw type. That is what my understanding is. I get lever valves because they are easy but I would put a stop cock in first then lever valve.
@PlumbLikeTom
@PlumbLikeTom 3 месяца назад
It is a very fair point, as I say I never intend to mislead anyone with my videos, I may well be wrong but I can only go off the information that's given to me. I do have another inspection in July, so I will ask again, in fairness the inspectors do know the regs inside and out as I've found out to my costs a few times with non complaint vertical ball valves and the like, thanks for watching and commenting, it is greatly appreciated

Another good on Tom. These ISO Valves are crap & not worth fitting, they restrict the flow & leak if you turn them off. I never silicone Basket Strainer Wastes & never had a leak. We tip here: if you do a lot of BS Wastes, get a Stainless Steel Brick Tie, one will be left at the Brickies arse!! They’re perfect for the BS screw👍👍
