"First forget inspiration. Habit is more dependable. Habit will sustain you whether you're inspired or not. Habit will help you finish and polish your stories." - Octavia Butler
I have a large jar that i collect words, sentences or small images out of old books or magazines. If I hear a stranger say something in passing that was interesting, I write it on a scrape of paper and throw it in the jar of inspiration. Then if I'm stuck, I may choose 3 random scraps out and use those to springboard some ideas from :)
Not lists all the time but the making of to get you going. I make it a habit to go to the museum to draw from the exhibits as often as I can. the drawings are getting faster and better as I go
I love your videos. The past couple of days my nine year old and i are making time for " notebooking". I encourage her to paint, write, misspell and be wrong. You learn amazing things from giving yourself the love and the grace to be a beginner at something. . I've been making really crappy art with my polychromos but it makes me happy. I want my girl to learn to challenge herself. Being challenged is great. Love the journey.
I feel a book coming on.... "Diamonds in the Dung - How To Stop Judging Your Art" by Danny Gregory. Seriously, this is great advice. Thank you Danny, and Happy New year!!!
My husband makes music (ambient music on his laptop)…everyday…I just asked him where he gets his inspiration from…he said; “dreams…observation…see something you like and think how can I attempt that…if you’re not happy with the results try it again, until you are satisfied “….and I think the key…like you said Danny….is that it is his regular habit.
I often feel creative, but I sometimes struggle to find where to direct that creative energy, if that may be by drawing or some other art. Cool video 👍
I have been doing my 10 idea per day for 9 months now. I have been going back and crossing out things I have completed. it's a lot of fun. doesn't take long .
What a great way to get ideas for anything---writing, art projects, or any endeavor. I am going to start doing this and keeping a "brainstorming list" of ideas that could go possibly nowhere but possibly to creative, rewarding projects. The main thing is does is train the brain to think and be open to ideas. No one else has to see them, and even if they do, so what?
This is such a coincidence (the way I interpreted the question at least), because I recently started wondering if I might have aphantasia, since I suck at drawing from imagination. But the more I thought about it, the more I realise I have a really vivid imagination. When I read or write I sometimes don't even look at the words. Stuff just plays out like a movie in my head. I also daydream a lot and when I think of, let's say a cat, I can envision this cat very clearly, but the moment I have to draw said cat, the image just *poof* disappears. I think there is a disconnect between my imagination and my ability to accurately translate that to paper.
That’s just the advice I needed today. I will search for an empty notebook and get started tomorrow morning. Thanks a lot Danny. Your videos are great and always inspiring.
In my opinion, yes you have a lot in your mind. Maybe what you could do like I did. I turned a sketchbook into an idea book. I have projects there that could last me for 2+ years to complete, so I'll never run out of ideas. The drawings look like a 5 year old did them, but I take notes on what the idea is, so when I go back to them I know right away what to do.
I just found your channel today! RU-vid suggested it to me because apparently they thought I might like it, and they were right! I subscribed right after watching that first video. I have seen a lot of drawing channels on RU-vid, most of them are good enough, but yours is the best I've ever found. Thank you for doing this!
First off, happy new year, Danny Gregory! And everyone in the comments! Second, my issue tends to be this way... I have lots of ideas. But, right when I'm about to put it to paper, I fizzle out real quick. Like my head starts telling me "Why bother?", "What's the point?"... I fall into a slump, and get nothing done. I shall do as you said here. Thanks for all the wonderful content!
Great advice. Good habits and the will to maintain them day by day will lead you to greatness and make any goal achievable. We grow in the face of adversity. Good luck to you all.
I started a journal for the first time in my life in 2020. it didn't even start as a journal. I just had the thought that I should start writing down my random thoughts. for the first couple years, I added to it, eh, once every month or two. eventually, I had enough thoughts collected that I thought, "it would probably be helpful if I dated these from now on". and then in 2023, I found I was writing in my journal several times a week. I've now started moving that creative drive out to other things, so my journal entries aren't happening as often anymore. instead, now I'm writing pages of notes for fan fiction, original novels, short stories, visual art pieces. and I've been making RU-vid playlists full of other people's ideas that I can use for reference and guidance as I'm developing my own. I just added this video to a couple of them. :)
I luv your videos. They really help me get past negativity and judgement, and just explore what’s next--be aware of what’s really on my mind. Keep em coming and thank you SO MUCH!!
Thank you inspiring and encouraging your viewers❤️. I always admire creative ppl in how they create their work be it art graphic design product design fashion jewelry or accessories. I don’t have a natural talent in creating from nothing but I emulate or mix match what inspire me. Even doing it once in a while is enriching and refreshing. Wishing you a great 2024 to come 👍
A perfect way to start this day in January 2024! Lists are very important and to pick 10 of anything is a great idea ! I will attempt to do this, starting today! Thank you Karen Dirmish learner!
Yesh that was also my key realization. The essence is to not hit a hole in one but just vomit out ideas and you will have good ones among hundreds. Might work different for other people but that was what got me over the big wall.
I try to make it easy with not too many lists/goals: a post it in my sketchbook with 6-7 ideas, look at free pictures + listening to radio/podcast is great. I wanted to draw crows one day but the podcast was about orcas. So I drew orcas, a few days later a boat. I ended up with several maritime drawings that month.
Thanks for the video, it was helpful. I am trying to find the motivation to draw more, and improve my artwork. I also enjoyed the birds, and hummingbird in the background 😊
Thanks for your great advice! What if the next day when I look at the list they are mostly all keepers and whose pace is a little slower than others and I’m now energized to work on what I’ve listed do I keep creating daily lists cause that’ll put my energy on creating the practice of building this new creative process and not on creating from yesterday’s list
I USED TO DO PORTRAITS I DID MY SISTER ONCE AND WON AN AWARD BUT THE STRESS INVOLVED WASN'T SOMETHING I WANTED TO DO THIS WAS MANY YEARS AGO I NOW JUST DO SOME FROM MEMORY AND LIKE IT MUCH MORE (I ALSO LIKE TAOISM FOR RELAXING THE OUTCOME DOESN'T MATTER AND IT'S LOGIC TOO) AND SOMETIMES I REALLY DON'T CARE WHAT I DO WHAT YOU ARE DOING IS WHAT I WANT TO DO AND LET GO OF HOW IT ALL LOOKS I'M GETTING THERE AND ENJOYING IT MORE NOW BECAUSE I DON'T CARE ABOUT THE OUTCOME SO MUCH
Where to get to see letters I can be inspired to write in my art journal? I just got adobe cloud, I will figure out how to use parts I need,.. here I want to write and draw on paper. I have all the equipments. Thank you, following you and guest you have for us to discover. Christine
I was very good at drawing and painting when in highschool, I stopped and went into a different career but now I try to draw it just feels crappy, like I never had that talent in the first place 😢. Do we lose our "natural talent" after a while? Thanks ❤
I would do more sketching but I love using ordinary graphic pencils but the smudging on the opposite page is so bad and I don’t want to keep spraying especially for little doodles, what would you do?
Have you ever experienced freezing when a teacher asks you a question.? Your mind goes catatonic and even though you realize after that you knew the answer there is no way to ice- pick your way out, to provide the answer. I think I under stand what Cory is referring to. It's not a question of coming up with ideas but rather it's a problem when it comes to implementing them . Your mind becomes blanker than the paper before you even though you had all kinds of ideas flooding your brain before you took up a drawing tool. It's the most frustrating and anxiety producing experience when you have this creative energy pushing you forward only to HIT the Wall of Inanity.😩
I have a question, I took my education in pharmacy, but now I want to shift my career to become an artist after deciding career shif came a full-time job opportunity in pharmacy college, now I am confused whether to take a job or continue with practicing my skills to become artist, can you guide
Do you make art regularly? Is it something you love enough to do even if you aren’t getting paid? Don’t need it to be your job? Could it be your side project for the rest of your life? I didn’t go to art school. And I have never made a living at selling my work. But I love having art in my life. Hope these questions help.
