Thank you for the tip Re the fan!! I’ll pass that along to the family members of the residents @ the nursing home where I used to work as a social worker. ❤ My sweet mom had Alzheimer’s Disease & I cared for her in my home. We had Hospice for her during the last 10 days of her life, just to make sure she was comfortable and free from anxiety and pain. She died with my sister & I lying next to her in her bed, w/my brother sitting next to the bed. She was surrounded with so much love. She was my best friend in the world, and she was terrified of “dying alone.” I promised her that I wouldn’t leave her alone to die. I sang her favorite hymns to her, as well as some Frank Sinatra & Nat King Cole. : ) It was so much different than I imagined it would be. She was in her favorite pj’s, with her special blankets, and I did her hair while she slept, so she would look pretty for my dad who passed many years ago. She always joked that she just needed her hair done and lipstick on so the Lord would let her in when she arrived at the pearly gates of heaven. lol She looked like the Angel that she was to everyone who knew her during her life, when het heart beat for the very last time. I had my hand on her chest, patting her gently like she used to do for us “kids” after bad dreams or nights we were sick, or sometimes just plain old feeling sad or lonely. She had the biggest heart, do I felt it made sense that she died from “Heart Failure”, (CHF). She never smoked or drank in her life, so I like to think that her heart just got tired from always helping others & when she had fulfilled het purpose here on Earth, it slowed down like a music box does, until the final beat played, and then…. Silence. Ya know Julie… I FELT her leaving the bed after that last beat. It wasn’t scary at all. It was beautiful!! I felt the mattress ‘give way’ ever so slightly, and at that moment I could feel this warmth inside of me, like when I was a little girl and was awakened by the sunshine flooding through my bedroom windows. It felt like that… so innocent and pure and there was no fear. There was an incredible, almost overwhelming presence of real love. It was the most peaceful feeling I have ever felt in my entire life and I believe it was her Lord & my Lord, Maybe it sounds crazy, but I know that it was Jesus Christ rather than an Angel, who made a “special trip” to scoop my mom up into His safe, loving arms so that she would have no more fears or confusion from the Alzheimer’s that she lived with for 10 years. She always prayed for others, but asked God for just One thing: that she would be spared from having Alzheimer’s, because she watched HER Mom go through it, & said she wasn’t strong enough to die from Alzheimer’s. But she got it despite her prayers, yet she continued to believe in Him & talk to Him- her Lord & King daily. What a testimony she LIVED for me & her family and friends. Now I pray that when my time on Earth is over, that I get to see what happened in my mom’s final moments when her soul left that bed and she was lifted up to go and be with God. That’s a pretty good death I think!! And I already told everyone that I too, want Hospice Care at the end for the support - not just for me, but also for my family. **!’ll now add a fan to that (I was just diagnosed with COPD). 😂 Thank you for sharing with us. I’m so grateful I found you on You Tube!! 🎵

Very useful info. I work in a place that’s a tourist attraction and has a TON of stairs. A lot of elderly and overweight folks get shortness of breath. We also happen to have some strong desktop fans in the area they typically find themselves short of breath. Obviously fans cool us off but I never would have thought they’d have that drastic of a physiological effect. Thank you 🙏🏻

My dad had that when he was dying from lung cancer it really helped. Strangely what didn’t help was when he was taken outside. He said the frigid air made it hard to breath like his lungs went into spasm. I even use the fan when I have a cold, I put it on low setting on my nightstand, sleep facing it and it makes it so much easier to sleep, even when your really congested in the nose. Thanks for all you do Julie.

You’re the first person I’ve heard actually talk about air hunger, but it’s some thing I get from my MCAS or EDS, possibly the POTS. When I was younger my son had asthma and I was struggling to breathe and he actually grabbed me and stuck my head in the freezer and it helped so much. He was only seven years old and so precious to my soul to be able to try and save me like that and he did. I did not want to go to the hospital that’s for sure.

I have COPD but only use my oxygen concentrator when I sleep because my O2 sats really drop as I breathe more shallow when sleeping. I also have a fan directed at my head. Was using the fan long before I was diagnosed. The respiratory therapist stated that she bet I slept with a fan on. Apparently, it is common for people with breathing issues to do just that.

I have stage 4 cancer, and I can absolutely confirm that this works! Morphine also helps, but it doesn't work as well as the fan. I also have a tendency to sweat profusely when I'm experiencing air hunger, and cooling my head, either with water or an ice pack helps as well. Maybe it's just cancer patients that experience this, I don't know, but hopefully it could help someone else
