Schools are back here in rainy Scotland, which means I have less time to dedicate to astrophotography. However, I know a good night when I see one and I know when an opportunity isn’t worth missing. So I sat back under the stars, and watched as my camera collected photons from 2.5 million light years away.

Great shot! I never get sick of looking at photos of Andromeda; it's tilted at the perfect angle to give you a sense of how huge it is..

PHD2 builds character. For the first few months I was accidentally losing my calibration. I'll give examples of what makes me lose calibration in PHD2: * Rotated my guide camera and/or guide scope. If you do this, rerun calibration (holding shift while clicking the guide button followed by waiting). * Pulse-guiding settings in EQMOD; when changed it seems to throw guiding way off, thus necessitating recalibration. * Balance. I've overlooked this one on a few occasions. Poor balance usually manifests itself in the introduction of drift in one axis in one direction. Beyond that, I presume you've already built a bad pixel map and dark library in PHD2. That your guidescope is snugly attached. If there is any shake or rattle, address it. A little trial and error goes a long way but with all the rain and clouds, it stinks to waste a any clear night. Especially on a weekend -_-

Saw you featured in the last AstroBiscuit video. I got my first telescope in January which marks the beginning of my astro journey. There was, and still is so much for me to learn. However while searching the internet and watching tons of videos there was one thing I consistently noticed. There aren't many females in this field at all. When I saw you I got excited. I had to come and show some love, because your work is fantastic! ✌️💚

Honestly, your guding in that photo looks decent. RA RMS is under 1" and your total RMS is barely above 1". I would adjust your RA Agressivness to 100 or even 110, and take your Min Mo for RA and DEC down to 0.00

M31 is a super tricky object to process with one sub length due to all that dynamic range going on, so I think you did it justice. Oh and congrats on your Astrobiscuit colab :)

Beautiful photo, it is so much better than mine from last year! I really like your processing, looks natural. I’m excited for the separate channel vid! My only PHD suggestion would be to look at possibilities other than PHD. I would change cables and take a good look at the mount. I’ve found PHD to be pretty solid and it’s usually something else. Recently I upgraded my laptop and had guiding issues, a powered hub for the camera fixed it. I spent a week on that one 🤦‍♂️

Hi Helena, I have the same mount (EQ6R-Pro), in my case sudenly I began to have problems with my guiding. Then I found that the toothed belt of one of the axes had come loose. So I tightened the belt, and everithing came good again. Check this in your case. Also I use the tool "guiding asistance" under the "Tools" menue, it is very useful too, in this case I use to do this in a possition nearby to the target I want to take picture. Best regards.

Well done!!!!! Coming along nicely. I still need to get a bunch of stuff for my DSO setups, but I have been busy getting my planetary imaging and solar imaging setups together (Celestron C9.25 + ZWO 290mm + EFW mini + LRGB filters + Baader CH4 filter) and Lunt LS60tha tilt tuned with BF1200 blocking filter. Had a self induced problem with my HEQ5pro (you'd probably fall over laughing if I told you) but that's now sorted.

if you are using dithering that will "disturb" the guidance for a bit and will leave you "offset" a bit but not a big deal... I'm dithering 5px every 4 takes. Hope that helps.

Hi Helena Like DJRonnie said 'Calibration is key' or failing that delete & reinstall PHD2 I recently purchased a new scope & started swapping dovetail plates, brackets etc so I could easily switch between scopes. Unbeknown to me this really messed up the PHD2 calibration & my guiding was really wonky donkey. Know im using two set ups I had to create two user profiles within PHD2 allowing for the different guide scope orientations. I also carefully marked to where the guide scope, guide cam line up together on respective OTA brackets. It's also worth updating your PHD2 calibration a few times a year All the best from rainy sussex. Marc

Well done on M31. I don't know if this is the correct way to do this or not, but I always re-calibrate PHD2 when imaging a new object. Even if i have perfect Polar Alignment (Polemaster), it seems the error gets worse every time I change objects.

What does the PHD2 guiding assistant say when you run it? Specifically, the RA drift, Dec drift, backlash, and polar align error? I find the info from the guiding assistant can be quite helpful

Fantastic shot of M31!!! Sadly the good Scottish weather has been great lately rain rain and more rain and clouds all the time. Hopefully this week I get a clear night. Any tips on photographing M31? It's a target soon. I missed Comet Neowise due to the weather. I hope I get alot of clear skies in next few months. M31 is my favourite deep sky object so soon I'm targeting a shot of it!
