The steaming light worked properly when we sailed from Spain to Turkey, so it's probably a broken connection, hopefully at the base of the mast.

Hi guys, change out your stainless bow shackles for good quality galvanised ones. The bolts on galvanised shackles naturally bind onto the threads so are less likely to come out even if your wire breaks.

See if there is a join in the wire inside the headliner below the mast. It is probably one 3 core wire and each fixture uses a common ground and with the other 2 wires as positives for each light. If that join is good then it's back to the panel or back up the mast to measure 12 volts at the fixture.

If the springs at the top of the mast in the lamp holder are solid Ansh that's not good give them a squirt of WD 40 or electrical contact cleaner if you stick your finger in they should both be "springy" fnnarr fnarr bit of Finbar Saunders there !! Don't know your set up on AB Sea guys check your deck plugs at bottom of mast then your switch back at panel for 12v in and out. A strong wind from your rear quarter as always guys!! Stainless shakles: No one can tell lifespan, or when they may crack due to corrosion. Thats why I use galvanized carbon steel shakles only. And the galvanized shakles don't unscrew. And they will not take part in any galvanic reaction. My rod kicker from Selden is fitted the other way around, no water can enter in.
@SailingABSea
@SailingABSea 4 года назад
We're going to change the shackles for galvanised when we get back to Turkey. Interesting option about the kicker, we'll look into that. Thanks.
@svhulda6157

Another recommendation is of course to use a ball hammer and slightly rivit the shackles at the thread end. Works for stainless and carbon steel. More idiot proof than thread locking.

Hi Barry & Aannsha, editing gets full marks. I thought your 'off season' vid's would be a bit boring - wrong! Great reminder to us yachters, experienced or otherwise, just what a hammering yachts experience thanks to the actions of salt water, wear and tear, faulty or incorrectly used fittings & products, and the massive payback from investing time in the meticulous inspection, testing, repairing of the yacht and it's ancillary's. A change of plan: Good decision. There is a huge 'retiring baby boom market' who want to 'live' a little whilst health permits. You guys are best placed to invite folk aboard ABSEA and take the time to help folks understand the upsides as well as the downsides of living the dream. Using Turkey as a base is a good call. Having travelled through 33 countries in the last two years, I agree, Turkey and the Turks get my vote. Kicker: Drill a drain hole! Be good. Love ya. Rob xx

What's up with that crazy looking swivel ? In my opinion I have never seen the point of anchor swivels. All they do is add a potential point of failure to the anchoring system and provide little or no benefits in return. My concern about swivels has always centered on the possibility of one of the two screws backing out, as happened to a friend nearly costing him his boat-anchor shackles are always moused with wire, so why not swivels? And the fact that the swivel shaft-made of stainless and therefore subject to work hardening-is torqued over the bow roller every time the anchor is hauled.as well as others are swivels in general are a bad idea and are the weak point in a critical area.
@SailingABSea
@SailingABSea 4 года назад
Good points James. The reason for that particular swivel is to ensure that Aannsha doesn't need to manually get involved in making sure the anchor comes over the bow roller correctly. It's a heavy anchor and I just want to make it as easy as possible for her at the bow. Before we fitted the swivel n Turkey the anchor would regularly not play nicely when coming up over the roller.

Hi Bazz, if you have a 12 volt test light go back up the mast and check to make sure if there is power to the light socket or not. The positive lead is the bottom terminal or terminals if there are two and the ground is the side of the socket itself .the positive terminals are spring loaded with what LOOKS like the spring from a ink pen and sometimes the get stuck in the down position or break off, and the terminal cant come up high enough to make the connection. Its worth a check before you start pulling wires though. Also the editing looked great. Nice job!

Your Anchor.- it has two holes . One - your chain is currently on and the other near the blade other end of the shank. If you put your chain on that hole 1st attachment point. ( base of the shank,) Then run chain along the shank up to the hole on the end of the shank 2nd attachment point.... ( your current attachment) and shackle it. Your anchor chain is now attached at two points. . If your anchor was to get stuck on rock or an obstacle on sea bed . You can pull hard and the upper shackle will break. The chain is still attached at the base near the blade, thus the force now pulling the anchor out instead of trying to plough in deeper. You recover your anchor without loss. I am sure the upper attachment shackle would be a specific break away shackle that will break at a certain tonnage. The chain between the two attachment points must be slack. This set up does not affect anchoring. The force applied when the anchor is at the sea bed is still horizontal , the anchor ploughs in because it’s effectively pulling on attachment 2 ...attachment point 1 is your emergency.... just an idea .

Q1.Interesting you are heading back to Turkey, I was told (rightly or wrongly) that if you have Turkish residency (which i know you did last winter) and you are out of Turkey for over 6 months, residency is cancelled. I'm sure you have a plan, I would be very interested to hear it. Q2. Not a good idea to mix stainless steel and galvanised steel, as others have said, all galvanised is probably the way to go. Q3. Good editing, may I ask what software you use? I know you have a Windows PC. nearly everyone else seems to use a Mac (I'm not keen on Apple myself) Q4.It looks like your Boom Vang is upside down, but I may be wrong.

Hi I have been toying with the idea of sailing but I have another year as my daughter has to finish her college degree first. Then I can think about traveling. Anyway in prep I am on the hunt for a boat as I have arranged a hard storage area for it for the next year if needed. So if something comes up and is suitable I will move on it and I have a year at least to get it sorted for sailing. My question to you is how did that 12V water heater work out for you. You swapped out the 230V so how were the hot showers? I have looked through your vids but could not find a follow up. Is that a bad thing? Thanks
@AannshaJones
@AannshaJones 4 года назад
Hi there Mr Solotwo, It’s good to hear from you. One year will go quickly and you will be thinking of travelling very soon. We have a friend who lives in Kaş marina in Turkey and he has shared links of boats that two of his friends have put on the market for sale. Please find the links below. One is for a Dufour and one is for a Bavaria. Dufour ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-p7WVD3mMSBs.html Bavaria ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-eAnjJj7nCCQ.html&feature=share To answer your question about the 12V water heater, it worked perfectly, but for us not having a water maker, to run the hot water from the tank at the stern of the boat forward to the heads and the shower means that we wasted too much water waiting for the hot water to arrive. So we showered outside on the swim platform. Once we get a water maker installed, this won’t be a problem. The hot water production itself from the heater has been excellent. Do let us know what specifications you’re looking for in a yacht and if we hear of anything we will let you know. Kind regards Aannsha and Barry

Hi Guys, The water cumming from the boomvang is not normal.... There is a small draining hole in the midle of the lower fitting. Looks like a Sparcraft boomvang, just fixed mine this week...... But there is something else. In the vang is a gas spring (one or two) that is supposed to push the boom up. Look like yours is not working. Mine had rusted away completely. I changed it for a stainless (316) one. Watch this: svjeorgia.blogspot.com/2013/01/rebuilding-sparcraft-boom-vang.html I ordered the gas spring online via a webshop. Found the specs on: www.rigrite.com/Spars/Isomat_Spars/Sparcraft_Pneuvang.php. You need to keep to these specs because if its too long you won’t be able to close it and you need the exact power to keep the boom up. Google Sparcraft boomvang repair and you find lots off info.... A working vang also helps furling in the main. Hope this helps you on the way. Cheers, AsianTune & Captain K MasarapSailing

This is not bad for the Med. in Spain, where I stay this year, you'll be hard pressed to find something less than € 600, pr. month, i.e. AUS 12.196 pr.year. For similar size boat.

@ Sailing Étanche sadlly, Sailing Ho'oponopono is correct about Med marina costs. In my blog I outline some of the research I did on about 14 marinas - mainly in Spain and Gibraltar. Basically, in Spain alone, marina prices range from AU$7,000 to AU$21,000 for 12 months. That is AU$19 - AU$57 per day if you divide the annual rate by 365. But actual daily rates are higher. For instance, while the annual rate to stay at the yacht port of Cartagena is EUR 5,062.90 / AU$8170, one night at Cartagena marina actually costs 32.76 Euros / AU$55.40. A month would cost us 452.20 Euros / AU$764.92.

A 1mounth old outboard and Mercury refusing warranty?! Thanks for letting me know, so I can skip the effort of ever considering anything from their (bloody) product range.

"month" Question: why don't you fit a prop protector?

Yeah, we were a little disappointed with Mercury about that. A prop protector is a good idea, we'll do some searching on the Interwebs.👍

Hi Baz, Great vid as usual....Best to put a "rated" galvanised bow shackle instead of the stainless (Gal anchor, Gal chain should be gal shackle no dissimilar metals and stronger), peened over the end, cut them off and chuck them away when you change them over, not worth the risk. You wouldn't use a stainless shackle on a safety chain trailer, would you? you know the old saying "The chain is only as strong as the weakest link" kb.rocna.com/kb/Shackles www.mantusmarine.com/mantus-anchor-shackles/ look at the rating difference in gal compared to stainless.

When we get to Turkey we'll be swapping the shackles for galvanised. 👍

Natural != good. Uranium is natural. Cyanide is natural. Algae blooms are natural. Cancer is natural. Just because something is 'natural' does not necessarily mean it is good.
