You can look for the faults in this, or you can choose to just watch it and enjoy it. Bottom line, after an hour and a half I felt happier and it's a film I want to watch again. I enjoyed the plot, I liked the three main characters and I really liked the production: the costumes are beautiful, it's very nicely lit, there are some very creative sequences involving the rain itself and some beautiful interior sets, all 21st century life magically 'gets out of the way', even though it's somehow set in the 21st century (e.g. characters use smart phones, but only to call each other, and they immediately put them away again.)

While not one of Allen's better films, it's certainly not "rubbish". I found it to be charming and funny. Selena Gomez was surprisingly good, and Elle Fanning is wonderful as always. For me, Woody's worst movie is "You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger". Now that was rubbish.

The script had some good funny lines, the plot was well structured, the acting solid. Directing was unexceptional, as is typical of Allen. I'd say it rests solidly in the middle of Allen's ouevre, far, far from his worst.

A Rainy Day in New York reviewed by Mark Kermode 1538pm 25.1.22 same olde woody allen. self denigrating woody allen... happy with the off the cuff punchlines. and i stil have a recording of his stand up routine, somewhere... the one the orthodox nazis didnt get to... do you know what - that journo lady looks like you? kindda... hmmmmm; somewhat vague.... but then she looks like an ex girlfriend who has had masses of plastic surgery, if you ask me. is she the one who starred in the catherine the great skit on ch4? maybe kermode can sort this mess out???? anyhow; i am of an era that enjoyed bananas... so. y'know... (long pause for effect) everything allen-esque merely comes across as the wonder years in self desruct mode... and i think he, allen, is totally bored with the whole concept of making movies... if movies he has been making and not waffling on whilst some douche takes tid bits of wit and applies them to celluloid. good bye. p.s i cant afford to keep her. i aint that kind a movie goer.

Found this to be one of Woody's best. Probably in the minority but I thoroughly enjoyed it. I also found Magic in the Moonlight to be one of his best too. Both films were witty and well constructed as stories. His point about movie making is wrong because the filmmaking in this wasn't professional film making. It was a student film. Selena Gomez was amazing. The two things that I found striking were just how diverse each female character was and strangely in the light of the me too movement, once again Woody shows us how to write well rounded and interesting and amusing female characters. Also impressive is women of different ages. The other thing I found impressive was just how clever the dialogue was. Woody still has an ear for clever and witty dialogue. I don't have a problem with a character being called Gatsby because basically call them what you will and his name suited. This is definitely better than some of Woody Allen's most recent output. Mark Kermode was favourable towards Blue Jasmine which I found ghastly and badly developed. This was definitely better than that mainly because he does comedy better than drama. In Blue Jasmine he played drama beats the same as comedy beats and it didn't work. This film was charming, funny and beautifully romantic. Don't tell anyone but I enjoyed it more than Annie Hall.

Glad I decided to go in blind as this review would have stopped me. I disagree with Mark on this one and looking at the comments I’m far from alone. Even though I agree with half of Marks review, I enjoyed it. I liked that The characters talk like Woody Allen in the same way I like my McDonald’s to taste like McDonald’s. It’s only ninety minutes, it’s Woody Allen, it’s New York, it’s funny, it’s daft, charming in parts with some decent music.

It'd be nice to hear more reasons from Kermode as to why it's "rubbish". Performances are excellent, some great, sensitively shot scenes and with a comic plot full of suspense. Plus some great one-liners. The overall motif of the film: the difference between people who love rain and those who don't is a valid and significant one. See my review on Electric Ghost magazine.

I must say, I rather liked it. Like all unremarkable Woody Allen-films there is always at least still one thing that stands out or makes you think or is original. In this case it was the scene with the mother that suddenly explains why Gatsby can never be the respectable, clean cut, upper middle class, upstanding young man him up bringing sets him out to be, which makes this a film about the nuture vs nature question. On a side note, the abuse alligations against Woody Allen 25 years ago were toroughly investigated by two professional, highly regarded institutions who both indenpendelty and unambiguously concluded that the abuse had not taken place.
@hypatia4754
@hypatia4754 4 года назад
He still married the adopted daughter of his partner at the time, a girl he helped raise. Parent/child boundaries were NOT respected by Mr Allen, I don´t care how much you say he isn´t her biological parent (neither is Mia Farrow who adopted her).
@bartmann81
@bartmann81 4 года назад
Allen and Soon Yi both claim the hardly ever spoke during the period he was in a relationship with her mother, let alone that he took active part in raising her. This is something that was never disputed, as far as I know. Now if you disapprove of the relationship because of the age difference or because she Mia Farrow's adopted daughter, I won't argue against that. I can understand that. I think the most daming is the fact that Allen started a relationship with a much younger woman, who had a very traumatic childhood, first as orphan on the street, later with an abusive adoptive mother. This kind of relationship could have easily been very damaging. As turned out, it wasn't. To many surprise, including my own, the relationship had endured for more than 25 years and counting, and seems rather affectionate. Soon Yi seems a formidable woman, who has made a carreer of her own as an educator. Their two kids don't strike me as unhappy either. So I can also imagine that there must be something very hurtfull for them about constantly being judged by others, who think they know better how their relationship works.
@AnnatarTheMaia
@AnnatarTheMaia 2 года назад
Gatsby can never be that because he is actually a part of the 1% of the unseen American elite - highly educated and au pair with any European royalty, not in spite but thanks to his mother's wisdom and his father's ambition, which unexpectedly has Woody Allen subtly paying an ode to American legend of unequaled opportunities... It's one of the finest moments in the film (which has several) where the director completely transcends his own character, as if he were performing an astral projection...

Timothée Chalamet as Gatsby Welles (I rolled my eyes too, when I heard that) plays the most annoying Woody Allen impersonation I've ever seen. Selena Gomez was decent, but her character was uninteresting and underdeveloped. I really liked Elle Fanning, beautiful, shy, goofy and delightful. the premise is recycled from one of the subplots of "to Rome with love", also recycled from Fellini's The White Sheik. Legendary cinematographer Vittorio Storaro bursts up up the screen with glowing warm colors, a technique which I liked in Wonder Wheel 'cause that movie was intentionally stagy and theatrical, but here it looks like a badly lit tv film. there's also a supposedly funny, but instead very questionable scene near the end with Elle Fanning running half naked in the rain. Every supporting actor, from Jude Law to Rebecca Hall, is massively underutilized. The ending is predictable and unsatisfying.

Woody Allen is a great movie fan (a passionate love affair which he shares with Quentin Tarantino), and he makes no secret of the fact that lots of motifs or even entire movies of his are homages to greatest movies ever made, nor does he make any apologies for that: "Play it again Sam" is one such example. He is one of the rare directors who shoots the kind of movies he would want to watch, the way he wants to shoot them, which is exceptional in the American movie industry.

@@AnnatarTheMaia His last movie "Rifkin's festival" is an homage to his favourite films and directors. There are several dream sequences in which Wallace Shawn (very good as Woody Allen) imagines himself in famous scenes from Citizen Kane, Jules & Jim, 8 and 1/2, The discreet charm of the bourgeoisie and The Seventh Seal (with an hilarious Christoph Waltz as Death) and DP Vittorio Storaro does a great job reproducing the different styles of those films. Overall, it's an improvement over his previous three films.

Despite the fact he's very, very wrong. Anyway not surprised this is poor, Woody Allen lost any quality control years ago, you can get away with just filming the first draft of your script when you're at the top of your game but he's not anymore so what you get are a lot of poor films. It sounds like this guy just doesn't like Woody Allen films. It's not the most incredible film but I enjoyed it. As a New Yorker born and raised, the plot is actually very realistic and captures the magic of new york.. I'm unsubscribing from this channel this channel sucks.

I felt the same, that Gatsby felt like a young person imitating Woody Allen. And in my opinion, only Woody Allen should do "Woody Allen". Larry David is probably the only actor who can come close to emulating that type of character in a very natural way, but everyone else should steer clear. Apart from the very experienced actors such as Jude Law and Liev Schreiber, I felt like I was watching a bad improv skit. Once I got over an hour in, I decided I didn't really care what was going to happen, and decided not to finish. I am disappointed. In all fairness, I've enjoyed some of his newer films such as Magic in the Moonlight, Blue Jasmine, Whatever Works, Irrational Man, Midnight in Paris, You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger, and Vicky Cristina Barcelona. I enjoyed all of those, so I wasn't going into this film set out to hate it.

Well you don't know Timothee. He was impersonating New Yorker too, which he is and knows his city well.

This is the worst woody Allen movie I have seen. And I like most of his work. Tedious and stupid and filled with vapid complaints of rich people.

I agree it isn't a good film. Not the worst of Allen's work but close to it. Chalamet was doing an over the top WA impression. Although I got the feeling that was completely how he was directed. Selena and Elle are 1 dimensional. The dialogue was way off for the age and time period. Allen clearly has no notion of young people in high society or not. The film with in the film is a student piece, it is clearly stated as such. Makes me wonder how closely it was reviewed. Cinematography was just ok. The older male characters are clearly WA stand ins like Chalamet. Jude Law handled it the best of all. At least it's a quick watch. Give it a C+.

Crash course on pretentious acting. Just watch Annie hall before this movie,u will realize how bad timothee is.he was just trying to to mimic Woody Allen. I'm watching it right now and I can't even stop laughing every time timothee is on screen

That clip alone with the two characters in the car turn me off. The rest must be awful. Wonder Wheel and now this. Hang it up, Woody!

Watch 'by the way, woody Allen is innocent' on RU-vid. Your probably like the rest of his haters so it won't change your mind but it's well worth watching for showing all Mia Farrow's faults.

One of the worst and retrograde films ever made. Seems that Woody has spent last decades in the freezer of his posh Manhattan apartament.
