A Random Convo About Church

Many of us got comfortable not going to church through the pandemic and we’re slowly finding our way back. The Bible tells us we need other Christians and we’re missing something if we don’t gather together to hear God’s Word. But our relationship to church can still be complicated. Jackie and Preston’s conversation today covers topics like worship style preferences, doctrinally sound preaching and discipleship, the pressure that local pastors face because of social media, and the topic of church hurt.

I found a church last year after not going for YEARS. Now I’m there so much, and am always one of the lasts to leave. This community has impacted my life in such a large way; it’s such a blessing to experience the love of Christ with people that love Him just as much as you do. If you haven’t been in a while, please do not forsake the assembly. There’s a reason we need each other. Join a church, and serve, and commune with the body of Christ. It’s vital

Same here. I think I spent all my free time at church from Sunday service, discipleship classes, evening prayers, Bible study, at some point I began to question if one can do too much church. But I found so much joy in being in the presence of God with other believers!

@@kap849 there’s nothing like it! I was just telling my Dad, it’s legitimate fun for me to sit around with my brothers and sisters in Christ and hear what God is doing in their lives and how He’s speaking to them through scripture. Truly, to know Him is to love Him, and I don’t want to ever experience life without Him again.

@robinwade8141

Charles Stanley definitely left a mark on mankind. He was on point and the thing that I liked about him most is he NEVER brought politics into the pulpit. I think that is my biggest pet peeve about how ppl use the pulpit to get their agenda’s known. I’ve stopped listening to two pastors that I like that have sound doctrine (it’s unfortunate too) because they brought politic into their messages. Our political system is definitely set up by man even though they can’t do anything without God allowing it. But voting is personal and to me and should remain personal. Because I study the Bible daily, when I hear a pastor continue to misrepresent I stop listening to them. My husband and I are trying to find a church now because I feel it’s important to be present. But I do attend a Bible study weekly, have a prayer partner and listen to strong teachings. I think we just have to pray for repentance for ppl that don’t share the true gospel because we all are fallen and for sure need Christ. I think sometimes it’s pride but only God can correct that in ppl, but prayer goes a long way.

My relationship is closer to God and I’ve learned what forgiveness meant. People please go to Church. If Christian’s have hurt you please know that God did not. He will restore you! Also pray for those who hurt you and also pray for yourself to not hurt others as well.

It can be rough, but we have to look at things logically & from God’s standpoint. Is the Gospel being preached? Does the church emphasize on discipleship & evangelism? Is the worship genuine? Too often we look at things from an emotional standpoint, myself included.

First of all, I would just like to say that I love your podcast and I’ve learned so much from listening to you. There have been times I have literally been driving in my car and pulled over to write something down that you said. Y’all touched on something today that I see a lot in my own community: Consumer Christianity … how many people bounce around looking for the trendiest church, or the most entertaining pastors. I think we should all pray for wisdom and discernment, and seek pastors and leaders who point us to Jesus and speak the Word first and foremost. If they aren’t teaching scripture more than anything else this should be a red flag. We need to get away from going to church with an attitude of selfish fulfillment and look for churches that are building us as disciples of Christ. Y’all touched on this so eloquently today. I think this is an important conversation to keep having. Thank you so much for your ministry and using your gifts to teach and guide us!
@valeriejairosi
@valeriejairosi 11 месяцев назад
I was just talking about consumerist church (I said capitalistic church) the other day - but from a different POV. How unfortunately a lot of church leadership will invest in discipling a congregant only if there's a return on investment. For example, "I will teach you to read and interpret the text so you can join the pastoral team or lead a sector of the church", but not necessarily because they want that congregant to grow and mature in their own walk with Christ. This podcast definitely humbled me though. For so long I thought it was Godly to point out all the flaws in church, but I seldom did anything about it or even prayed fervently on it.

That one scripture will get us every time. It’s okay to be frustrated with your fellow Body when we act outside of what God desires of us. But remember, it’s HARD out here being a believer in a broken world. I also gotta add, dudes in the streets are generally operating in an illegal space. Which means they are also operating in deception, off bat. While their standards or codes of conduct might be something they “honor” or abide by- it’s easy because it’s worldly/ flesh-based- and inherently wicked (saying wicked sounds so churchy, but 🤷🏾‍♀️). We, the Church, are held to a higher standard, where we, every day, every minute have to operate outside of what seems natural to us (and sometimes the world around us). It’s hard. We be sucking at it ALL the time. All of us. Every day. And in the Church, that trying is exposed to your peers at a different level. I say that to say, try not to compare the natural deception of the world to the vulnerability of The Church. You’ve got this cause God has got you. Walking with you-- and, honestly, showing you areas to pray about. Cause The Body of Christ really do be messy. Lol

This makes me think about itching ears! I also believe that the “boring” preaching teaches discipline, and reveals things about where you are in your flesh and spiritual walk in Christ. The same for listening to gospel music. It’s like are you really able to worship God or are you in your emotions. Again this is my own personal perspective via the things I myself encountered. This conversation really blessed me. I enjoy these kinds of conversations.

Yea, I remember Fracnis chan talking about someone complaining to him how they "Didn't like worship today" and he was like " That's OK, we weren't worshipping you." That's always stuck with me now when I hear people complain about worship they fear of the Lord comes. It's nice to have skilled worshipers, but that's not always possible. At the end of the day, it's about our hearts.

I left my the catholic church 9 years ago and haven't been to an actual church since. I came back to faith in 2018 and have been reading and studying the Bible ever since and growing my relationship with Christ. During the pandemic I turned to the "mega" churches online and I do see now that most of it is motivational speaking. I know God commands us to have fellowship and we were not meant to follow Christ in isolation. I have felt the loneliness since my family doesn't have strong faith and I have few friends who share the love of God like me. Last week I found a church close to me and I plan to try it out Sunday! Im really excited and hopeful but I also have some anxiety about going alone and making friends. Im shy and Im not the best at initiating conversation. Please pray for me that this is a good fit and that im finally able to find friends and a community. I am so happy God led me to this channel, it has really impacted my life. its so refreshing to find people who can preach the word of God but keep it real about how hard it can be as a Christian in todays age! God bless y'all!

If I could give advice on visiting churches that has helped me in the past, it sometimes helps to reach out by email in advance and to speak with the pastor or an elder. That way should you go in person, it isn't a "cold visit" but a "warm" one where someone there already knows a bit about you and why you're there. You can also ask questions in advance and know a bit more about them, and in speaking with you they may think of someone they could connect you with so that you don't feel like a complete fish out of water.

I’m musically inclined, and I’m extremely sensitive to sound that i become overstimulated when things are off. The church i attend, the worship team is so amazing that I feel every moment, and I bawl my heart out every service. The pastor’s messages and deliverance are great, and I learn a lot from the services. His voice though, has a particular tone that is sharp to the ear and without soft contrast. Almost like nails on a chalkboard for me for some reason. I feel bad for feeling that way. I always see it through because it’s not about me; I came there for Jesus, not my comfort. I just feel bad for thinking those thoughts about the pastor at all though.

There is a video on YT made by a Catholic content creator that was on how the protestant notion of worship isn't really worship. As he explained himself, I started to understand what he meant. In many non-denominational/protestant churches, "worship" is synonymous with "music". Recently, I had the chance to visit an orthodox church, both out of curiosity and out of a desire to better understand my brothers and sisters in the faith from other church traditions. It was during that entire 3+ hour long service that I truly began to understand what that creator meant. The collective chants of scripture professing the tenets of our faith, the prayers for the global church and the orthodox priesthood for fidelity to the teachings of Christ, the collective prayer for the forgiveness of sin, the sing-song chants of praise and glory to the triune God, and more. In that moment I felt what I experienced was true worship. I have so many questions following that experience like why more non-denominational churches do not include prayers for fidelity to the word for church leadership as part of their regular service? Why don't we collectively profess the tenets of our faith, especially if we are "seeker friendly"? If someone unfamiliar with Christianity had walked into that orthodox church, they would leave knowing exactly what it is Christ taught and the Church practices because it is laid out plainly. In most modern protestant churches that I have attended, it's "worship music --> announcements --> teaching --> closing prayer -->fellowship, maybe". And Sundays are centered around the teaching, which isn't bad, but could risk becoming a glorified extended Bible study with a mini concert at the start. It would be nice to hear thoughts on how to bring more worship into the non-denominational church that extends beyond music.
@noble604
@noble604 11 месяцев назад
Thank you for your thought provoking comment. May I suggest we keep in the forefront of our minds what biblical “worship” actually is? Perhaps it would help us to spend time with The Lord searching and researching the scripture on the meaning of worship, where it’s mentioned in the Bible, how it’s expressed and what are we commanded to do with it. Wor(th)ship is declaring the *worth of GOD our Father through the gift and might of JESUS. If a church service Is about our collectively voicing our prayers and needs, speaking our faith to The Lord, declaring our commitment to Him, as well-meaning and obedient as that iis, is that “worship?” Is that declaring the magnificence, worth, glory, majesty, power, dominion that all belong to Him... and to Him only? It might be helpful for us to understand what “wor(th)ship” is to express it in the highest, holiest way.

@@noble604 I encourage you to attend an Eastern orthodox church, as you misunderstand my post. I do not want to misrepresent their practices (again, I was only a visitor). However, what was performed in their service can be mistaken for nothing other than worship of our Heavenly Father and worship in the highest and holiest way. Peace to you.

A much needed conversation! Minute by minute, both of you are giving great examples of what is needed in the body of Christ. One key takeaway for me was the importance of discipleship! I grew up learning that salvation is free, but discipleship cost everything. This conversation is EVERYTHING! I am grateful for true teachers like you both, you are relevant to the Kingdom!

I trust in God and keep faith even as I struggle to take care of my children and myself. As a single mother things are so hard on me. Both of my sons are autistic I’m overwhelmed. God please hear my prayers. I’m constantly struggling to buy groceries and constantly struggling to pay rent and now that I’m home schooling my sons I’m struggling to buy their school supplies. I’m so ashamed and overwhelmed so please be kind. I choose to have faith over fear as christians that’s all we can do. No matter your struggle, we can turn to God. He knows us personally and can give us strength to overcome our challenges. Heavenly and merciful Father, I come before your glorious throne today, in humble adoration please help me overcome my struggles and my constant fear of homelessness. Walking with faith is all I can do! ❤

YOu are so correct, Jackie! You are right on with social media is making it hard for the local pastor. I am having a hard time finding a local pastor that has the kind of teaching I have gotten from people like you, Tony Evans, Levi Lusko, Franis Chan, etc. It makes it hard to listen to someone that isn't on that same caliber.

Thank you both for your enjoyable discussion. I'm busy with so much negativity that taking time to step out of this war to just enjoy myself ,listening to sane people. Winning every battle is none the less devestating until this war is over. Never doubted our victory but forever seeking the largest "victory party" possible and that means holding on in the worst of times for even the worst " Ain'ts " .

Guys just keep going❤ Also in regards to worship I have been there where we want to hear what we like but then I realized its about me coming to worship God because He is worthy so I offer Him me and not about me coming to receive what I like and what I want to hear and its help shirt my perspective❤

I like this!!! Mrs Perry you saying things that everyone thinks but doesn’t say especially on a public platform. And Mr Perry you are giving a solution and understanding. I like how Mrs Perry you brought up friends who are in the word. Cuz I’m sure a lot of us feel like “ i watch RU-vid, i got friends, why do I need church.” It’s so real yall. Church is a whole entire topic that a lot of ppl struggle with but it’s still a place for communion, worship and fellowship for the body of Christ. Thanks 🫶🏾

I’ve been a Christian for a while now as I came to Christ around 18 years ago, and my experience with 90% of churches is that community didn’t play a part in it. Everyone smiled and gave high fives at church but during the week you heard from no one and then it was rinse/repeat on Sunday’s. When my son was born for example, no one was there for us from the church, even though we attended a megachurch at the time. In fact, I had more non Christian friends because to me and my family, they showed more genuineness than Christians in the church. My personal opinion is that it’s mainly because of familiarity within groups or “cliques” where Christians didn’t want to open up to newer people (as opposed to staying in the comfortable group they grew up with) is because it was a lot of work, at least this was my experience with most Christians. I’m now attending a church with my wife and children where we are blessed to have some community in the church, but the sad thing is that it took going to many churches in order to find a church that we could have community with. So I’ve written a song about it called “Community”, and here’s a link to my music video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WcpSfFnHXVI.htmlsi=iUSWrmkv-aKVE4R7 I’ve also explained the meaning behind my song “Community” in a video here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XMQGSpBF_Bk.htmlsi=Fo7zupKQYifq1t6H

Now bring introduced to the both of you through a video you did with Dr. Eric Mason, I have been pulled into "With The Perry's". Continue to let your light shine that people may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

Great sharing. Shows me how blessed my life has been! And how much seemingly random decisions l've made have been, who to marry, what church to join, what friends to hang with. I look back over my 61 years and say wow! I had little to nothing to do with it, but GOD has kept me every step of the way. There was no formula for me in choosing my church home. It was simply the place to take root. I didnt even know what l was becoming a part of. Ive just been richly blessed. Thanks for this great sharing and encouragement.
