Józef Kozłowski (Jozef Kozlovsky, Osip Kozlovsky) was a Polish noble. A teacher of another Polish composer Michał Kleofas Ogiński. This requiem was composed in honor of the last Polish king - Stanisław August Poniatowski.

Poniatowksi apparently remains a polarizing figure, no pun intended, given that he attempted to prevent the partitions of Poland and yet presided over them.

What big, effortless, beautiful voices singing such long, sensuous Bel Canto lines, with such feeling and fine taste!!!!+ I must get this C.D. right away! Thank You, to all involved in this effort!

Some people are wondering why they have never heard this. Very simple: the prejudice in the U.S. and elsewhere against the accomplishments of the Polish people. In the 18th century, Poland was politically dismembered and destroyed by its neighbors: Prussia, Austria, and -- most of all -- Russia. German and Russian chauvinism discounted Polish accomplishments. Even today people will refer to Chopin as a French composer. Her was born in Poland to a Polish mother and a French-born father who had moved to Poland and considered himself to be Polish. The attitude seems to be how could a Pole be one of the greatest composers of all time? Of course, Chopin spoke French as did every educated Pole at the time. And he lived in France because he was a political exile from Russian oppression, as were thousands of other Poles. Kozlovsky had to assimilate to Russianness just to produce his life's work. I am American and partly of Polish descent. When I was growing up, it was common to hear "Polish" jokes and to be referred to as a dumb Polack. Things have gotten better, but this prejudice runs deep.

@jozefmysowski5082
@jozefmysowski5082 3 года назад
Brałem udział w tworzeniu Ośrodka wiedzy, wymiany doświadczeń, budowania atmosfery,wsparcia mistrzów i działań, które zaowocowało powstaniem w końcu masy krytycznej by wybuchnąć niewyobrażalnym, absolutnym sukcesem światowym.

A truly beautiful Requiem, one I don't know much about! Like the use of the Gong in the exciting Dies Irae at 6:06. Love the Sanctus, with it's range of dynamics. The Agnus Dei is beautiful with the Clarinet solo before the solo Tenor enters. So much contrast with the soloists and tutti choir and even time for a cello solo!

1757/1759 - 11 March [O.S. 27 February] 1831) was a Russian composer of Polish origin. He composed the wonderful Requiem Mass in E flat minor Missa pro defunctis for the death of Stanisław August Poniatowski, the last King of Poland (1732-1798), commissioned by the King himself before his death and performed on 25 February 1798 in St Petersburg. - Wikipedia

Wikipedia: Osip Antonovich Kozlovsky (1757 in Propoysk - 11 March 1831) was a Russian-Polish composer of Polish and Belarusian origin. For the most part of his life Osip Kozlovsky was attached to the Russian Imperial Court, for which he wrote most of his music. In Russia he became popular especially for his patriotic polonaises. In 1791 he wrote the music for the unofficial Russian national anthem of the late 18th and early 19th centuries Grom pobedy, razdavaysya! The second part of this polonaise was later quoted by Peter Tchaikovsky in the final scene of his opera The Queen of Spades. Kozlovsky composed a famous Requiem Mass in E flat minor Missa pro defunctis for the death of Stanisław August Poniatowski, the King of Poland (1732-1798), commissioned by the King himself before his death and performed on 25 February 1798 in St Petersburg. He wrote another requiem for the death of the Emperor Alexander I.

Chiarissime e riconoscibilissime allusioni a Mozart.

Scandaloso semmai è come tale fulgide gemme giacciano sepolte nell'oblio piu vergognoso e incomprensibile.

Such a magnificent work. How have i never heard of it, or of Kozlovsky before?! Ought to be standard repertoire for all symphonic choruses.

Prachtig. Doet ook denken aan Requiem per Rossini. En wat een prachtige bas!

This is sublime. I can't find a CD of this anywhere. Instead I'm going to print out the score and have it made into a suit, and parade triumphantly around the world.

This beautiful requiem is rarely performed. If you are in Singapore on April 7, 2024, you can attend a performance at the Esplanade Concert Hall. There is one recording from 1988, made in Moscow and later transferred to CD (Melodia). That's the recording that can be heard on RU-vid.
