The Huskisson Monument in Saint James' Cemetery was put up in 1836. It was designed by J. Foster in a Greek Revival style. It originally held a statue of William Huskisson by John Gibson. Huskisson was a Liberal M.P. for Liverpool and President of the Board of Trade. He was run over by a train and killed in 1830, at the opening of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway. The monument is an adaptation of the Choragic Monument of Lysicrates at Athens.

@@cm7737 The Ironic thing was that George Stephenson, The Father of The Railways, lived at 34 Upper Parliament Street, but for a period he stayed in what was The Caretakers Lodge of St James Cemetery whilst he was working in Liverpool.

There are 3 tunnels that have been bricked up some where used in 1800s to access the cemetery the first bricked up arch you seen is a tunnel that runs all the way to Duke st/ Rodney st they were closed and bricked up during the construction of the cathedral
@MegaNeil1955
@MegaNeil1955 Год назад
Think the arch at the beginning was were the horsed drawn hearses used to drive in for the burials!

Any history of the place ? I'm looking forward to doing a brief history of St James garden this year. Covering the basic history of the place that is freely available online. Looking forward to see if you find "Little Grace" Also Kitty Wilkinsons grave is extremely important to Liverpool.

Should do an update on the fairy glen in Sefton park for us, I complained to the council as that was overrun with rats and shopping trolleys. Stagnant water that had rats swimming in it, and the waterfalls were turned off and had brown sludge running down the wall! It was flamming awful! Wonder if they’ve done anything with it

Old cemeteries are often neglected and bad decisions made such as landscaping to try to improve appearance rather than preservation of heritage. The history section of the St James Cemetery website says this about its decline:- "The dangerous nature of the site and its frequentation by drug users and incidence of other unfavourable activities finally led to action being taken by the Corporation in the 1960s. The cost of maintenance of the site as it remained was considered too great, and the memorials were cleared. The majority of gravestones were stacked at the southern end of the site above the pit burials. These were covered in earth resulting in an artificial slope. Others were lined along the sides of the site and pedestrian tunnel, with only a few of the larger monuments remaining in place. The atmosphere of the former cemetery was destroyed."
