It's a shame that all these years later FPS games haven't evolved beyond F.E.A.R.,even many technical aspects such as lighting, AI, voice callouts and environmental effects. Back in 2005 one would've expected 2020 games to be practically alien technology yet we're still stuck with the old, just with nicer coats of paint, higher resolution textures and better shaders.
I mean, many technically have, but the issue is that part of what made FEAR's ai great was the level and audio design. While Fear's levels are a bit bland and empty looking, it helped make sure that anything that could mess up the ai's pathfinding was either nonexistent or very unlikely to cause problems. The same can not be said for a lot of modern games today.
Katrina is forever going to be a grim reminder of our desperation to find the enemy making us forget to protect our own. Even if that levee was un-savable, the evacuation effort could have saved thousands of lives if it was taken seriously. Heckuva job, Brownie.

Charlatan Wonder is the best cat video channel on RU-vid because no other cat video channel puts half-hour long in-depth video game reviews before the feline content. Truly a remarkable gimmick that keeps me coming back to see just what games he will cover before getting to the main focus.
Reminder that John Carpenter, writer and director of the original Halloween, the Thing Remake, They Live, and Escape from New York to name a few, worked on F3AR and definitely didn't know what the series was about and helped fuck it up.
Agrees sadly. It should've just ended at the first game and it's two expansions. Easily my favorite game of all time. The sequels just couldn't live up .
I really liked FEAR 2, but definitely for different reasons than FEAR 1... Maybe if they just labeled it as something else ? Also it's DLC (REBORN) was great
@@Hriskataaa It WAS originally going to be named just Project Origins because the original developers lost the rights to the FEAR name. But then they got the name back, and the name 'Project Origins' was voted on by fans, so they decided to keep it as a subtitle. There's a great video about the history of FEAR by, I think, the Gamers/Gaming History (? Something like that) channel. Maybe it would've been better if it remained just Project Origins.
Holy shit a video about my favorite game of all time Thank you Char. I love you. The game has such a sad, complicated history, and it's a shame we'll never get another. Maybe for the best though, Because nothing will live up to the absolutely flawless masterpiece that was F.E.A.R 1.
He ate their flesh to get their knowledge and information, if i recall correct. Like African cannibal thing when you eat your enemy flesh and get their power.
Ooooooooh! So *that* explains the line Josh Brolin's character says from the Grindhouse movie! (I believe that double feature movie also came out in 2005 as well.)

Funny enough a lot of people (including myself) think Extraction Point is the better Expansion Pack than Perseus Mandate. I'll be the first to say that Extraction Point wasn't perfect, but to me it felt a bit more polished than Perseus Mandate on at least a few areas. Although the introduction of a 4th Faction into the mix the Nightcrawlers was kinda interesting, specially in how eerily calm they are when all the supernatural bullshit happens when compared to Delta Force, the ATC Security team and even The Replicas themselves are freaking out and dying to it the Nightcrawlers never really raise their voice to anything bigger than just calm radio chatter. and I did have some fun with the lightning gun and the new assault rifle, parts of Perseus Mandate felt like they went on for too long, especially the mine section. but when all is said and done if you prefere Perseus Mandate that's fine, I'm not gonna say like "you have no taste" or stuff like that since I also had my fun with it so I can see where you are coming from. although there are somethings I want to clarify. F.E.A.R. isn't part of Delta Force it is it's own division in the US Army with Delta acting as backup for them, the Team in the 2nd Game, callsign Dark Signal if I remember correctly, are a part of Delta Force not F.E.A.R.
He is free to have his preferences BUT as soon as he starts just talking out of his ass he kinda stops having having that credibility as a reviewer(on the topic of F.E.A.R expansions)and devolves into 12-year-old ranting. I agree with you on Perseus Mandate completely but to say that Extraction Point is "a bit more polished" than Perseus Mandate has to be one of the greatest understatements of all time.
Fear's a great way to pass time until the apocalypse ends and we finally enter the post apocalypse stage. Then we will be playing fallout in real life, so no need for video games anymore.
Been binging your videos because you popped up on my subs and I gotta say. I like this approach to talking about games. Its rare to find people that strip back wacky edits and let the footage speak for itself. Its nice
Got all of them in a $5 bundle. First game is amazing, played some of the first expansion. Similar feel but lacks that something from the base game. But a buddy and I burned through Fear 3 in 3 hours. The whole game on the hardest difficulty. Was actually pretty fun, but as a generic shooter where we messed about the whole time and not as a Fear game. And was really short.
FEAR 1 and its expansions get at least one playthrough a year from me. I mostly agree about the shotgun; it turns my dick into a rhinocerous horn when it fires, but I hate the sense of anticlimax when it gibs an enemy. I'd rather have bitchin' ragdolls every time. On another note, I've developed a minor headcanon that Point Man's "reflexes" are actually a manifestation of a very short-range precognitive ability. Makes more sense to me than just "Oh your mom was Satan so I guess you can think fast real good"
actually just replayed fear 1 on the hardest difficulty, and my go to loadout was dual pistols (main weapon) shotty and the assault rifle since it covers just about any situation, also one thing ive always wanted to know is why F.E.A.R. exists to begin with, what event caused them to be formed? what threats have they dealt with before? etc.
I'm really glad this retrospective doesn't completely write off FEAR 2 for not being as scary as the original or having ADS n' stuff. It's still a really solid shooter and I think it deserves more respect.
Ah man. I gotta say, I really love your videos. Even when I disagree with your opinions on games I still love hearing your input on them. Just something about you is so likable.
One of my favorite games of all time, absolutely love it. I also really love the story as well, Alma was a great character I generally felt sorry for her after all the stuff she had to go through.
I never felt that the (first) game was outwardly scary enough for something literally called "FEAR" -- oh, sure, there's the spooky Sadako-lite segments, but the office buildings and clone army seem kinda dry. Imagine if Dead Space was marketed as horror, but instead of Necromorphs on the Ishimura you spend 90% of the game fighting The Covenant on the station from Prey 2017. Oh, I'm sure the game is fun -- I just remember this being a little off-putting.
IT relied on a lot of "look this way to get scared" situations which don't really work in an organic plathru. I don't deny it's a good shooter but otherwise it felt really dull.
Eh, to me the dimly lit office spaces and those f'ing stealth bastards were effective. Also helps that whenever you see a shadow of something, that something is actually there, even in the scripted parts.
I can't recall playing any games that have this haze/smoke-cloud effect from dry walls being shot into like F.E.A.R. Such an atmospheric element that isn't more popular among shooters.
The assault rifle was one of the best ARs in gaming too. That thing tore up players and NPCs alike at all ranges. Even in close quarters in multiplayer the TTK was so great it still melted SMG and shotgun players that were not quite as accurate as they hoped to be. Loved FEAR, first one was simply fantastic.
So I was thinking that you reminded me of the guy whose PlanetSide videos I used to watch, then I looked up the things a platoon leader should do and realized you were the same guy.
I love how the ending to fear 1 has yet to actually be followed up on. The phone call reveals that the entire game was just a setup tutorial test run to see how effective Pointman is yet we never see who these people that set him up actually are
DMC 1, DMC 3, FEAR, Morrowind & Oblivion, RE4, HALO CE, SWAT 4, Heroes OMM 3, Silent Hill 1-4 and on and on man games had SOUL in the beginning of 2000
I disagree with you when it comes to F.E.A.R Extraction Point. As for level design it is more varied than the main game, it makes significant improvements to AI(more on that later),ramps up the horror and opressive atmosphere and it does not fuck with the story(presenting a smaller and more hopeless escape story). As for Perseus mandate: it was fun because it still had F.E.A.R gameplay, it was ugly as fuck, tried to tell an ambitious but poorly executed story and is overall fine. AI: you kind of neglected what really makes the AI special when compared to anything else on the market. Fear: the AI's goal is to eliminate the threat and not just the player. This means that when the individual is threatened by a grenade or gunfire his primary objective becomes survival(Extraction point improves this). I also see it as wierd that you rant about vivendi "not getting it" when monolith completely abandoned everything that made F.E.A.R good when it came to F.E.A.R 2. The enemies were retarded,ALL the guns were weak, the lighting was no longer anything special and the horror was basically gone. Conclusion: As it stands I consider F.E.A.R Extraction Point the pinnacle(gameplay wise) of first person shooters. Change my mind.
Yeah, especially disagree on the weapons, the laser was fun to slice people apart with- and he doesn't even mention how bad the weapons in Perseus Mandate are(there are weapons in PM that aren't in EP)
@@SuperBoyboys The Laser carbine is quite unique:as it doesn't just fire "laser bolts" but actually works sort of like a real laser. And the minigun is just incredible. It is the king of miniguns.
The FEAR sequels should have been completely unconnected to the first aside from the FEAR team. It would have been so interesting if each sequel you fought against a different paranormal entitiy....it would be the best SCP game ever
I personally I always found Subway Levels way worse than Sewer Levels. Sewer Levels can have some semi intersting things, like Water Purification areas, some swimming and poison water areas you have to avoid. Subways are just tunnels. With an occasional station with a bathroom. That's it. If your lucky you'll have electrified rails
It's interesting you don't like Extraction Point as much as Perseus Mandate. Most FEAR reviews I've come across say the opposite, and having played them I feel the same. To me, once you revisit FEAR or move onto it's expansions, the horror loses it's edge and the game becomes a John Woo film simulation (which is a good thing). I always felt the levels of Extraction Point felt more like the core game's in terms of layout, which helps keep the combat high-octane, while in Mandate you're fighting in a lot more open areas where the AI ironically has less room to shine and just gets really tanky to compensate.
In some of my favorite FPS games, a shotgun would act more like a medium-range rifle than they would a force cannon. Certain shotguns can be the latter, but I don't like when some games say they HAVE to be short range only, hence why I am proud of the Doom shotguns and the Combat Evolved shotgun. And that's what I love about the shotgun in the first FEAR; even if you're a few yards away, you can still decimate the Replica Soldiers into gore. They can call it a VK-12, but it's really a SPAS 12 in all but name. And maybe the SPAS 12 isn't this awesomely cruel.
Love the first F.E.A.R. Dual wielding pistols were so good. Then the sequel came out and really let me down. I might need to give it another chance but don't know yet.
I thought I was having a stroke for a minute, I thought the anti-sponsor was in addition to the Patreon thanks, not replaced by it. I kept rewinding and thinking I just wasn’t hearing the shady ad proposition being read off to me.
Ahh yes the FEAR Franchise. Played all of em,shat my pants when playing for the first time. and then it is kinda dusting away in my Library. Overall this Review was Awesome.
no mention of the first-person melee combat system that allows you to shoot somebody into a bloody mist up - close with the shotgun and then immediately jump and scissor-kick his buddy in the face ? pffft.
I think the whole F.E.A.R. concept was kinda wasted in favor of a linear storyline. It could've been a universe similar to the SCP universe where games are basically "tactical" shooters on paranormal settings. Imagine a F.E.A.R. : Horsemen, or F.E.A.R. : Red Pool (basically SCP articles that would make a great basis for games), or some totally new stories. Just has a lot of potential.
I'm a massive wuss when it comes to horror games but I loved the first fear game so much. Wasn't even the scripted "oooh spoopy ghost woman" pieces that scared me, it were the stealthy boys that made me spooked
I know Fear 3 kinda sucked, but I still had an absolute blast having a goofy playthrough with my BF. using the slow mo at the right time when they were in a pinch just to give them the slow motion even though I wasn't really in a good spot to make use of it. The co-op was surprisingly effective at generating a ton of fun for me. And many inside jokes were made that day. Good times.
My biggest mistake playing the first F.E.A.R. was trying to play it like a horror game with cover-shooter sensibilities; it is at its best if you play it on max difficulty so the Replicas' aggression and tactics force you to be creative with your gunplay, whether it's shooting your own grenades to make sure they don't dodge-roll, slide-tackling dudes so you stay under cover while doing damage, or constantly remaining on the move so they don't flank you because they *will.* Play it like a fast-paced shooter, but smart.
Fear 3 is a shame. The costco and the appartments had me clued to the screen, clinching my butt in fear. But as you said, those parts are 10% of the game and the rest is boring/frustrating because many parts are simply not made for a single player and downright unfair. But those 2 great levels showed that they had the skill/potential to make a proper fear game.
Extraction point was actually pretty good. The scary bits were scarier, the shoty bits were shootier. Main problem was the lack of story development. IMO FEAR doesn't really get bad till FEAR 2

Awesome video. I loved the first and second games, it's really unfortunate that production and development of this series was rocky and turbulent, particularly because this series kept getting passed on to different creative teams so it hurt the overall product. Day 1's F3AR was the final nail in its coffin, and it's been dead ever since. I keep hoping, even after all these years, that they'll give FEAR 1 the Resident Evil 2 treatment, with an amazing remaster, but that is just a total fantasy. RIP FEAR franchise, except for F3AR (there are just no excuses).
FEAR is one of the few games where the light having no battery life makes sense. my real life rifle light only gets like 15 minutes of full power per charge heh. bit longer on low power.
It only took me about 30 minutes into the game to find out that Alma is not good for the health of those replica super soldiers. Notice that whenever she appears, there isn't a replica in sight.
I think it's really easy to forget how well graphics aged in the mid 2000s, prey, fear, Bioshock, HL2, all of them hold up pretty well, honestly some of them look better aesthetically than some of the games in the generation after it. I think its definitely apparent that graphics seem to always make a half step that adds a lot but is missing some things needed to supplement it, and then the next gen is basically perfect for the time, like ps1 doesnt look very good unless it is really stylized, then ps2 era graphics have aged pretty well, then with ps3 era it is mixed with overall good graphics but there are a lot of low res textures and the lighting is only ok, but worse of all the really brown and grey art styles all generic games had, and ps4 graphics are overall pretty good, it seems like the newest gen is going to break that cycle since there are no obvious issues with what has been shown so far
They had artistic style and utilized harsh shadows and lightning (look at Splinter cell chaos theory HD on PS3) which modern games don't really do anymore, the UE4 graphics are extrremely high fidelity but lacks any stylistic flair and will probaly look like crap in 15 years
Shotguns irl are effective at, like, 25 meters. Meanwhile, they can't hit something more than 5-meter away in video games (for balancing reasons, of course, but it's bizarre, still)
I've soaked in another review that covers extraction point expansion and to be fair I felt it was a good deal more observant and given to honest credit than your coverage. It may be a matter of taste that EP doesn't seem an equal measure to the base game but it does evolve and improve on the series. Something that does count against it is that it moves the effective ending of FEARs ending to the end of EP with it's M.A.D. quote and credit crawl. The ending for both DLCs is sour for different reasons, one being badly optimized for most systems playing it and the other a hand job aimed at a different FPS audience. Anyway, off my point there. The EP expansion was a sincere attempt and improvement. I'm not sure how you can't see that, even with it's obvious faults.
The Paxton Fettel gameplay in F3ar was the best part of the game. Instead of stupid cover mechanics and bad shooting, it turns the game into a high speed body discarding simulator where you jump from enemy to enemy and deliver as much close quarters damage as possible until your current body gives out. And you can possess a few unique enemies, like the teleporting mid boss and the knife wielding crazies. Playing point man is absolute shit in that game, but I love how Fettel's gameplay retrains you to just run into the biggest enemy concentration. It's not Fear, but I'd love a dedicated FPS game for the body switching ghost mechanic.
