When it comes to inner sleeves for Magic: The Gathering, Pokemon, and other standard sized trading card games, KMC Perfect Size have long been the overwhelmingly best choice. But as the number of players who choose to double sleeve and protect their cards grows, so too does the need for a diversity of inner sleeve options.
That’s why this video will critically examine the Bordifies black bordered inner sleeves from Ultimate Guard, the brand new Dragonshield clear and smoke style perfect fit sleeves, as well as KMC’s own attempt at inner diversity, the KMC Perfect size HARDS.
Knowing which product is right for you can indeed be hard, as many different players have many different needs, so let’s take a look!

Hey Professor, The KMC hard sleeves could be a good way to show off your collection in 3 ring binders, or portfolios, so that way you don't have to use penny sleeves that catch and get stuck in the black part of the pages, or so you don't have to use the higher priced sleeves that you need for your actual deck. This way if someone wants to look at the back of a card, they don't have to remove it from a regular sleeve and get their fingers on your valuable cardboard.
@kylerickert2240
@kylerickert2240 7 лет назад
Thanks for this. I went to get some clear sleeves recently, saw the perfect hards and thought "do I need these, what are these?" I then noticed the perfect fit was the same price for double and just got them. Glad to hear I made the right decision.

Double sleeving in dragon shield requires a special technique. Before you do this, wash your hands thoroughly to remove any oil. You pinch the outer sleeve to make it open more like a mouth than like a thin slot, then you put one corner of your perfect fitted card in and you leave 1 finger inside the mouth then you stop pinching it. It is best to use your little finger, unless you have very short fingers in which case you should use the pointer or index finger. At this point, you slide the other card corner into the outer sleeve, maintaining a finger in the middle of the card, between the inner and outer sleeves. Next, slightly pinch the outer sleeve again to give your finger clearance. Finally, slide your finger all the way down until the bottom of card is where you want it to be. The friction of your finger and the perfect fit is much greater than the friction between the perfect fit and the outer sleeve, so he perfect fit will stay on the card in the exact way that it was before you inserted it into the outer sleeve.

In your summary of the smoke style dragon shields, your pros say "SMOKE style can prevent/reduce opacity" this wording suggests that the sleeves increase transparency as to be opaque means to block all light

I have the "inner sleeve slides out when sleeving" even on the KMC perfect fits (not all, but some). What I did was I took another card alongside the perfect sleeved card and shoved both in at the same time, then took out the additional card.

Hey, this always happens! All my commander decks (300 cards total) are double sleeved in Dragon Shield Mattes and KMC perfect fits. What I did when this happened is just stick my finger gently behind a card and slide it down to the bottom using pressure from the finger. Don't go too deep or you can stretch the sleeve / damage the card, but this solution works perfectly.
@asergioamEDC
@asergioamEDC 7 лет назад
Forget support cards, just hold your finger behind the card, making pressure outwards toward your finger in the front and shove the card down... no need for special tricks or what ever, it never fails. When finished with all cards, just press them down and the air comes off.

Just saw the KMC PERFECT HARD at my local shop. Picked them up to test for myself. I'm a Dragon Shield old formula die hard, who also likes to double sleeve. These are amazing for Dragon Shields, as it's often difficult to seat double sleeved cards into them, but does give a sizeable increase in girth (tee hee).

I bought the Perfect Hards to use for a board game which has a box insert that won't allow for sleeves much larger than the cards themselves. Figured the thickness would be around that of a normal sleeve and plan to use them as the sole sleeves for that game.

I use the prefect hards to help with curling on foil, masterpiece, old, and any otherwise warped cards. I live in a pretty humid area, so it takes almost nothing to have some old premiums look like a parabola, and they help with the marked card issues at tournaments, despite making the deck as thick as my single sleeved commander deck

Hey Prof, trying to fit in a perfect-fit card in a dragonshield sleeve is a pain but there's an easy trick. Fit-sleeve your card, put an unsleved card on the back of it, slide them both in and retire the other card. Won't get a problem with it again.

I think the hards may be good for those of us that like to bling out our decks (you know how we EDH players like our shiny cards). I'd imagine it would help significantly with foils that like to bend and warp over time or in more humid conditions.

In my experience with KMC hards in the past week of using them, I found the answer somewhat obvious. In a trade i received a cavern of souls with a huge s bend on the long side on the bottom half of the card. About a half inch from peak to peak. When double sleeved with a typical perfect fit, there was still some small deformation in the card, in addition, the parts that were bent felt significantly different, soft and deform-y. To the point where I could feel if it was that card on the top of my deck. This became bothersome when laying it out on a playmat in a game (i'm sometimes not the lightest with that) as well. I felt as if I was further damaging the card, in addition to the bothersome difference between typical cardboard. TL;DR these are absolutely phenomenal for making damaged cards feel like they are normal paperboard. Additionally, they add additional protection to any accidental slips (and heavens forbid, bends) in the hands of you or your opponent. I couldn't imagine the guilt I would feel if I bent an opponents multi-hundred dollar signed chase card during a cut.

(Partially) translucent sleeves are only an issue an tournament play if your cards don't have a regular back, because they have damage that is visible through the sleeve or are double faced. You won't get disqualified from a tournament just for playing with pink sleeves. If you can see the Insectile Aberration through them, that's a problem.

Dragon Shield side loader sleeves don't slip when put into sleeves as top loaders tend to do. I've had KMC inner sleeves slide up with different outer sleeves; including Dragon Shield. I really like the side loaders and likely will stick to them from now on for double sleeving. Worth reviewing if it hasn't yet been done.

Hey Professor. I thought it'd be worth it to mention that I too have some frustrations with double sleeving Dragon shields. While clearly not impossible, I do feel it should be noted that it may be a problem with the tightness of the regular sleeves than the inner sleeves themselves, as even KMC perfect fits have a hard time sliding in. But of course, we should expect to a brand inner sleeve to fit into the same brands sleeve altogether. Either way, a change in product is a must. Thanks for the review. May have to get myself those awesome smoke perfect fits for my delver deck. Just in case a judge does call me out.

I just bought inner Dragon Shield inner Clear sleeves to use with my pokémon deck that was already in Dragon shield Purple Classic sleeves (the newer "classics") and here's my thoughts. When i started sleeving, yes, the inner sleeved cards were a pain to slide into the outer sleeves. However, i found out that it's not a problem when barely apply pressure when holding the outer sleeves as i slide the inner sleeved card in. The card easily slides in without the inner sleeves sliding. One warning though, like other inner sleeves in this video from other brands, the cards were curved a bit in the inner sleeves and were a bit tough to get in. Strangely enough, with my secret rare card (bodybuilding dumbells), i really took my time to not accidently bend the card and it seem the card didn't get as bad a curve as other common cards that i didn't really cared about curves.

I've found with new Perfect Fits even, the card will slide out when double sleeving (specifically with Dragon Shields since it's not a smooth fit when both sleeves are fresh out of the packaging). I have the most success with older perfect fits that have been used in another double sleeved deck and recycled later for other cards. The older ones seem to have more "grab" to them. I'll definitely be trying the Dragon Shield ones in this case since I just like the brand and the con is exactly the same as what I've experienced with KMCs :^)

*raises hand* There is a special trick to sleeve dragon shields with KMC perfect fits. Sleeve as normal but insert another non-sleeved token card on top of sleeved card when double sleeving. I normally put the sleeved card in about a half inch, then put the token card in on top so the are flush. Using a playmat push both cards up into the dragon shield using my finger to push it all the way down at the end. Then carefully pull out the token/land card and sleeved card stays in place. Might take a little practice but this works perfectly. Hope this helps!

The cards sliding out of the inner sleeve when double sleeving happens with the KMC Pefect Fits as well though; so I'm not sure why the same issue with Dragon Shield's bothers you. I just use the "spare/junk card as a 'shoehorn'" trick.

Dragonshield actually created a video detailing what they think is the best way to double sleeve with their products. It helps a lot. Though, personally, I feel the best way to double sleeve in a DS sleeve is: put a second, "filler" card behind the one you're trying to sleeve, just the edge of the cards into the sleeve, then press them against a hard and flat surface like a table to gently push them evenly inside without the sleeve slipping off. Finally, once the cards are about 3/4ths of the way inside, slip the "Filler" card out. Bend the card and sleeve a little and slip your thumb into the sleeve and apply pressure to it while gently sliding it down. I don't necessarily like bending the card to do this, but this method allowed me to optimally double sleeve a modern magic deck with DS perfect fits and DS Mattes nearly without fail. It's rather time-consuming, though.

Hi professor, I always enjoy your videos but i have a small gripe about your doubl sleeving: you should try to use a finger to slide them in the outer sleeve instead of simply pushing them, this way you will avoid the problem of the inner sleeve being dragged out, even with tighter sleeves like the dragon shields.

So I don't comment often but I just wanted to throw out there that while yes the dragon shields do tend to slide off while double sleeving, they do offer the same sleeves in a side loader style. This prevents the sleeve from sliding off of the card when you place it into the outer sleeve.

A suggestion for your sleeves-product reviews: Can you judge the clarity of the sleeves? Often cards start to look dull if double sleeved. In this review the Dragon Shields look noticebly more clear. (Compare timestamp: 5:33 and 7:33) Perhaps this impression is just because of filming and focus at these moments, but the KMC seem to be more whitish.

Recently I decided to double-sleeve my decks, because I felt I wasn't protecting my cards enough. I got one pack of Dragon Shield Smokes and a pack of KMC perfect sizes, to see for myself which brand did better. Oh my lord, the Dragon Shield inners were so EASY to sleeve with! I could close my eyes and put the inner-sleeved cards in the outer sleeve while whistling! I made fun of my friend who had trouble sleeving with his KMC's and quickly proceeded to my second deck, to try the KMC's. I wanted to cry. I wanted to tear my hair out. Even if I was very careful, even if I tried 5 times, the inner sleeve would slide off the card and I'd have to try again. In the end I found a technique to sleeve with, but it was really frustrating. Are KMC's really that great? I found Dragon Shield inner sleeves to be way better. I'm sticking with Dragon Shield from now on, I don't trust KMC, especially after seeing what happened to the formula of their Hypers...

I would also have remarked in the video that with the added thickness of the KMC hard sleeves may prevent the deck from fitting in a deck box typically designed for the format the deck was built for. I own a UG XenoSkin 200 card box for EDH and it already holds the double sleeved decks snugly. Probably couldn't fit the decks if they're hard sleeved.

Another possible use for thicker inner sleeves, although it's pretty niche... I have a heavily damaged card that I inherited with a friend's collection. I'd be worried about playing it outside of casual games. Even in a double-sleeved deck, there is a slight difference in feel between it and undamaged cards, which could presumably result in disqualification. But if the inner sleeves were thick enough, and I haven't tested this, it should be impossible to detect the damaged card during shuffling. To be clear, I am talking about a card that is not merely scuffed up, but severely damaged, possibly by a washing machine at some point. If I were really that concerned, I'd just buy a replacement, but I'm not using the card right now anyway, so I won't drop $60 for a better fourth copy of Illusionary Mask.

KMC Hards seem good for double sleeving for storage purposes. I love your reviews but noticed a lack of discussion about the best way to store cards, particularly for long periods (years). I understand it is difficult to test given that you cannot really try 100 combinations and wait a few years, but any chance you can speak some to the issue of the best way to store valuable cards in terms of the sleeving? I don't need matte, good shuffle feel, opaqueness, etc. to store cards...I just want to know the most cost efficient way while still keeping the cards safe.

The way that worked for me was by pressing down on the corners of the inner sleeved card as I inserted it into the outer sleeve instead of pressing down on the center. I think the thicker KMC's are meant to fight that issue as well. As you know it is very frustrating. Thanks Professor.

Can you do a top review of the best inner sleeves? Like the binder top

Maybe Perfect Hards are great for card games that have double sided cards. I tried Perfect Fits but they are truly meant for inner sleeving and are not tough enough to protect the cards on their own. I am hoping the Perfect Hards are a little more durable. Most clear sleeves that I tried have a rough structure on one side that makes it tough to read text, which sucks for double sided cards that have important game text.

I use dragon shield matte as my sleeves. Which inner sleeves would recomend to use with them? Great video! Thanks!

Professor, thanks for, again, a great review of these sleeves. You really helped me out with your old ones and since I've seen your review of the KMC Perfect Size and Hyper Mats, I can't think of using any other brand of sleeves any more. But, are there any kind of sleeves for these over-sized Commander-Cards? They don't need to be perfect, but it would be nice to have them protected at least a little bit.

Ultra Pro makes sleeves for oversized cards. You can usually find them on Amazon.

Thanks. Are there other brands offering oversized sleeves? Or is it just Ultra Pro? Cause these ones are side-loaded and not top-loaded I mean, i would use these, if they were the only ones, but with a top-loader alternative I would be happier ^^

Perfect hards are not only for players of expensive decks, but is best for both bindering pricy collections and also for grading and selling high end cards. But yes, just get the regular perfect fit for decks.

Dragon Shield Smokes are so frustrating to fit into a regular sized sleeve with card, that I ended up getting 3/4 of the way double sleeping my deck, and then proceeded to de-sleeve them and throw them away, and go back to KMC.

Hey Professor, will you happen to do a price comparison on the new commander sets that are coming up soon as you did for the last set?

I don't know about The Sol ring Borderfies example you gave. Revised had incredibly poor quality control so I don't think the showing of the border is so much a mark against the sleeves as it is against wizards print quality during revised and unlimited.but the rest of your points still stand, and I agree with the overall grading.

the KMC Hards are way to go if you have spend 1.500 bucks on a modern oder legacy deck and want to make sure the sharp edges of sleeves wont scratch or poke the cardboard inside during shuffle.

Any chance you can do a review of small (Yu-Gi-Oh) sized sleeves?
