I've been a fan of the Nationals ever since they moved from Montreal in 2005 when I was living and working in the DC area. I've remembered so many lows for the first several years because the team was that bad. The best players they had were Brad Wilkerson, Chad Coredo, and Ryan Zimmerman. I now live in the Hudson Valley of upstate NY but I still follow them as best as I can. I can't begin to explain the joy that I had when the team won the World Series. I just wish I was still living in the DC area so I can join in on the celebration. Thanks, Nationals for a great season and making me a happy Nationals fan.

This will be one of my fondest memories as a Nationals fan. From going to the games in opening week and seeing Scherzer strike out Harper. Over coming adversity from that 19-31 record. Then finding unity and heart to take them to the World Series for a historic win. This season was something else but one to remember.

Washington Nationals: A Brief History (includes both Senators franchises and Montreal Expos) 1901: Washington Senators becomes a charter member of the new American League. 1905: Club experiments with putting their alternate team name, “Nationals,” on their uniforms. 1924: Washington Nationals wins its first American League pennant, then defeat the New York Giants in seven games in the World Series. 1925: Nats go back-to-back, but fall to the Pittsburgh Pirates in seven. 1933: Washington wins its third AL pennant, but the New York Baseball Giants get their revenge for 1924, beating them in five games. 1954: The Nats are immortalized in a fictional Faustian novel, “The Year the Yankees Lost the Pennant.” The book would become the inspiration for the Broadway play “Damn Yankees” the following year. 1960: The American League expands to 10 teams. In exchange for a new expansion club in Washington, the original Senators move to Minneapolis-St. Paul, becoming the Minnesota Twins. 1969: Canada’s first baseball team, the Montreal Expos, begin play in the National League. 1971: Upon hearing the club would be moving to Dallas next season, fans trash RFK Stadium during their final home game, forcing the Senators to forfeit. (The relocated team is renamed the Texas Rangers.) Washington would be without baseball for another 34 years. 1981: Montreal comes out on top in their division’s closing half in the strike-interrupted season. They then go on to defeat Opening Half champion Philadelphia Phillies in five, but lose to the LA Dodgers in the NLCS. (A bit of a side note: the St. Louis Cardinals finished ahead of Montreal on aggregate.) 1994: Montreal is one the best teams in baseball that season, but a season-ending strike not only ruins their playoff hopes, but ultimately the franchise as well. 2004: Major League Baseball announces that the Montreal Expos will move to Washington next year. 2005: The newly-christened Nationals begin their inaugural season. 2008: The first game in Nationals Park is played. 2012: Washington experiences playoff baseball for the first time since 1933 as the Nationals claim the East Division title. They lose to the St. Louis Cardinals in a heartbreaking five game series. 2014: Nats win their second NL East crown in two years, but lose to the eventual champion San Francisco Giants in four. 2016: Nationals win their third division title, but still lose in the NLDS to the Dodgers. 2017: Another year. Another division title. Another NLDS exit. 2019: The Nats’ 93-69 record is only good enough for the first Wild Card spot, but not only do they manage to beat the Milwaukee Brewers in the play-in game, they upset the Dodgers in the NLDS, get their first National League pennant by sweeping the Cardinals, and for the first time since 1924, win the World Series in seven games against the Houston Astros.

I grew up in the DC area, in suburban Maryland, and saw both Senators teams leave. By the time the 2nd one left, though, I was a fan of Maryland's own Orioles. In the 1980s, I moved to a city with a National League team, and they became my new favorite team. They had their ups and downs but did win a World Series. In 2005, I made sure that I was in the stands for the Washington Nationals' first-ever visit to play my adopted home town's team. The Nationals lost that game, but 5 years later, I journeyed to DC to see my team play the Nats, and the Nats won that one. Ryan Zimmerman hit a home run. My team had a disappointing season again this year. Ironically, one of their better players was a former National. After watching the Nats in the postseason, I am almost ready to make them my team. Eleven-year-old me in 1963 never could foresee Washington playing the Colt .45s in a World Series and beating them someday.

Some of those past teams that fell short could've easily been playing for a World Series beforehand. But yet this year's Nationals got it done when not many gave them much of a chance - myself included. But yet the Nationals overcome all the doubters & skeptics & erased all their past postseason demons this October. Congratulations to the 2019 World Series champion Washington Nationals!!

Whenever all was lost, someone stepped up. So much pain went into that triumph. Instead of getting demoralized, they got stronger. They loved and played for each other. Their season hung in the balance every game since May 23rd to game 7 at Minute Maid. A team like this not only makes you feel proud to have loved them since they came back to my home and were selling 35 thousand tickets to see a 50 win team but it inspires you on those days you think you can’t make it. As a Nats fan I think what made the World Series so meaningful was all the lows they had before getting to that point. From being the worst team in baseball for about a 4 year stretch, losing to the Cardinals in game 5 up 7-0, missing the playoffs after that, losing to the Giants, Dodgers, and Cubs in the 1st round. I grew up with the Nats so seeing it all come full circle is pretty amazing.

I thought about this during the entire series. However, neither the Astros nor the Senators qualified for the postseason, but what we saw this year could have happened (with a league swap too)

Reminds me of the new York post saying about Joe Torre in late 1995 "clueless Joe." Both men won't he world series. Joe in 1996 and Dave in 2019. Nice to know nice guys do finish first. It would be nice if Montreal does get an MLB team again. There was a rumor going around the internet about one or two years ago that MLB is thinking about expansion and part of the expansion is Montreal and either Mexico City, Vancouver or London getting an MLB team but I haven't heard anything lately.

The fact that Davey Martinez isn't in the running for manager of the year is crappy and unbelievable at the same time
