This song is about a person & someone (a shadow) they only meet in dreams. They are in a lucid dream state, and don't want to wake up and be apart. The shadow gives them melodies to remember them by, and upon waking they will finally write their first song.
The bridge through the end of the song symbolizes the person traveling back to the waking world, while the song is forming in their mind. The song actually ends the exact voice memo of the melody I woke up with from a dream, which became our first song (Midnight Clover). There are motifs to Midnight slowly throughout the song, which ramp up towards the end. Interestingly, midnight is in a different key than A Shadow, BUT my original voice memo is in the key of A Shadow! I realized this towards the end of making this song, and we put it in at the very end. So this is kind of our first conceptual song that ties into another one, like a prequel! This reflects in the visuals within the video, too. If you know, you know!
A Shadow is a fantasy story, but can relate metaphorically to many things: the yearning feeling of a dream or lifelong wish, longing for someone/something, missing someone who's gone, and them sending messages from beyond…or simply the concept of nostalgia, odd familiarity, liminal spaces, sleep paralysis, & lucid dreaming, which I experience often. Back to the fantasy story, I do imagine this as a person falling in love with a recurring sleep paralysis/lucid dream entity.
I went through years and years of old videos to find some liminal videos that remind me of the dream world. The old videos were filmed by my childhood self, my mom, Matt, & me and J's parents. There's videos of every state that I've lived in, in different time periods (also a recurring dream for me).
I wanted the video to feel/look like the song, and there's a lot of meaning that I have put in the editing, too. The "sleeping" visuals are lit by the spinning dolphin light, which is something I lit my room with as a kid. The whole dark concept of the video is inspired by the lighting of my old room, which is shown in the video. I've always filmed things to try to preserve memories and that is me walking around the house in the old videos. The light/golden hour daytime videos symbolize being in a bright, good dream.
If you have interpretations, I would love to read what you think! Always love to read your thoughts.
We both have so many voice memos recorded from dreams, and that's how lots of OrcaMind songs are written. Some background, I had it as my new year resolution to write an original song for years and kept putting it off. Because of OrcaMind, we finally started to pursue this seriously and it changed the course of things in a positive, fulfilling way. This is the main recurring theme of our band, like a recurring dream. :)
We passed this song back and forth during production so many times to add different things - lyrics, synths, etc. It's my favorite when we collab heavily on songs like this one.
Thank you for your amazing support along the journey of this song. We can do this because of you. See you soon!
(Lyrics [OrcaMind])
I saw you in a dream I've had before
I was scared I could not see you anymore
I chose to go with you and went ahead
with sincerity upon your breath you said
Coming unreality
Derealizing lucidly
The song that wrote itself
is what you need to hear
Let it dry your tears
The song that wrote itself
will come to you
This place is strange, and yet I feel at home
Your face recurred, obscured by a shadow
I'm in a haze from which I cannot wake
I struggle first, but fear will dissipate
Hover over vividly
Everlasting lucid dream
The song that wrote itself
is what you need to hear
Let it dry your tears
The song that wrote itself will come to you
The song that wrote itself
is what you need to hear
Let it drown your fears
The song that wrote itself will come to you
This other world, recurring dream
I wanted you to hear me sing
The song that wrote itself has come to me
You will remember vividly
The moment upon which you wake
The song that wrote itself will come to you
