A short clip of me driving Alexander Y-type Bristol RE, UVL873M, from the petrol station on the A46 Doddington Road junction to Pyke Road, opposite the LVVS Transport Museum in Lincoln. This recording was purely made to test my new audio recording device. Most of my recent uploads have been recorded using a Samsung Galaxy Smartphone, mounted on a handrail or aside window. This method has its limitations, as the audio using the built in microphone on the Galaxy does not give great quality results.
After witnessing a fellow Omnibologist recording video and audio separately, I thought I'd have a go at doing the same. I'm still using the Galaxy to record the video, in this case with the S6 at a fairly low resolution. The camera is mounted on a vertical handrail on the nearside front luggage pen. The audio is recorded using a Tascam DR-40 digital recorder, mounted on a nearside seat frame over the rear axle, so roughly midway between the engine and transmission (remember that the gearbox on an RE is in front of the rear axle).
Considering that I forgot to bring the Tascam instructions with me, this turned out quite well. There's some obvious variations in the microphone input levels, which makes the end result sound like i'm turning the volume up and down slightly. I need to figure out how to switch the automatic input level control off, hopefully that will actually be possible. Then I can adjust the sensitivity according to the bus I'm on, as some are a lot louder than others! I also need to sort out the wobblyness of the video footage. You wouldn't believe that the camera is firmly fixed in position. I think i'd switched on the built in video stabilisation on the smartphone, which always seems to be asking for trouble. I'm fairly certain Samsung didn't have this sort of use in mind when they designed the phone!
One thing that I did find a lot easier than I thought was the synchronisation of the separate video and audio footage. Hopefully you will be hard pressed to realise that they were recorded separately.

The wobbliness is totally dependent on the surface of the road, and I'm not sure if anything can be done to stop that.

You can use the image stabilisation software on the camera, but that can often make things worse. I prefer to clip my camera mounts to something solid, as the glass mounted ones can sometimes be unreliable.
