Love to see the bristol REs that Ulster bus used here in northern Ireland from around 1980 to 1991 as my dad God bless his soul drove them for many years

Every note of these engines was music to me as a kid so many memories those tones bring back

Oh that wonderful throaty roar takes me back to getting the bus to school, deliberately not getting on the GM Buses National but waiting 5 minutes for the Crosville. Sadly in latter years Crosville too were running more and more Nationals so it was a special day indeed when Crosville got their Bristols out.

Wow! I grew. Up in Bristol in the 70's and RE's were absolutely everywhere. I have such magic memories of being ferried up and down the A37, between Knowle and Temple Meads as part of of my weekend pub visits in the city centre. Nothing sounds like an RE ploughing up a hill with a bucket load of people on board.

Just as I remember them. Wonderful sound, I was really disappointed when they were replaced!

Nice as this is, the real in view RE is one with the Gardener engine fitted, but this Leyland also sounds great.

Were loads of r e s in the south Wales the sound of these buses was amazing on the steep valley routes some of the cynon valley lasted over 20 years in service

Its amazing how quiet it at idle then makes itself heard as you going along. It really growls at 1000-1200 rpm.

OMG, she sings just like our old ones from CTB in Christchurch, NZ! Lovely to hear that Leyland engine screaming its heart out!

Sounds lovely, well driven, too! I noticed last time I saw 73 that the engine looked to be passing oil. Hopefully, the new 680 will give a new lease of life.

Always loved the RE. Drove so many on Bristol Omnibus between 1979 and the 90's....Loved the Leyland 510 variant..they were so fast....The Gardner Engined ones were slower and smoother....The Leyland 0680 was the engine i had the most connection with...Loved the sound....just awesome...I was lucky enough to drive a RE at Weston Helicopter Museum last September at Crosville's Rally....A J reg....Ex Southern National...Look forward to possibly doing this again some time perhaps this Year....Great video..loved it....Steve.-

Considering how worn the engine is, it still sounds like an RE should. We have now have a 680 engine which is slowly being rebuilt ready to be fitted. That will make a huge difference to the performance!

Very nice but as I used service Eastern National ones of these in Chelmsford (ECW) bodied they had the 6 cylinder Gardener engines fitted which I think have the best sound, but the Leylands were good as well.

Very creditable performance for a 600 engine, does not sound too tired! The Alexander bodywork is probably quite light, well under 8 tons. There is nothing to beat that Leyland 600/680 sound. Among modern PSV engines the only one that sounds to me like a proper engine is the Iveco (Renault) 9 litre in the Volvo B9TL. Shame the B9TL has been replaced with the B5!

It sounds awesome and just like a leyland should loud and proud I'd say it wins hands down and a driver who knows how to drive a semi -auto!! Good work sair

What a gorgeous beast , when she fired up knew i was in for a corker ride, a proper bus with a PROPER engine!!!,. old Leyland600 smoked a lot and needs a re-build such is the rarity of a 600 powered RE. Stroud Depot of BOC had two 600 powered flat fronted RE,s NHU 196-197F , they sounded just like 873., those were the good old 1970,s as zit encrusted teenager i enjoyed listening to Proper Lorries and Buses with ENGINES!!!, not the crap nowadays, just a few day ago rode a god awful contraption, a Cornflake packet powered by a cheap Chinese electric motor more suited for a Rampant Rabbit Sex Toy, you,d buy from an Ann Summers Catalogue.

As much as I like the ECW versions of the Bristol RELL buses. The Alexander versions are my favourite as I do like the Y-Types regardless of the chassis :). Also I do like the ZF sounds from the gearbox as well.

I take it that's a Leyland 680 engine. For a bus that was new in the 1970's (I assume this was new then), it certainly has some character and music to it 😀👍! An MAN ALX300 would've more than likely given up (a 1998-2001 model) I think.
