In this episode Steve from the excellent History of the Papacy Podcast guides us back into Neolithic Iberia and goes through the overall history of what would become known as Hispania from the first populations to the Celts, Visigoths, Basques, Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans and etc, we watch a general overview of Hispania from its geography to its very complex history. With the coming of Rome and the fall of Carthage to the collapse of Rome to the barbarian invasions and kingdoms this episode leaves off with the arrival of Islamic expansion into Hispania while also touching on those who resisted and accepted Islamic rule. Of course, this is just the beginning of the story.

Ohhh my gosh! Thank you so much! It’s hard to find good stuff about Visigothic Spain. There is so much resources on Frankish Gaul, early Anglo-Saxon Britain but little is known of our dear Iberian Peninsula, the land of my ancestors. (I am Brazilian 🇧🇷, mainly of Portuguese descent.)

Iberians are not from northen Africa, because it shows in the genes of modern spanish people that the Genome is far from those of north africans, while close to that of Europeans. On the same note, Iberians make like between a third to half the genes of modern spaniards, mainly alongside the mediterranean.

Thank you. As a person of Hispanic heritage, this was the part of my history I knew the least about. It's a shame that due to the Independence movement most countries in Latin America have strongly rejected their Hispanic heritage so schools teach little to nothing about the history of "La Madre Patria". However, at an academic level our biggest weakness is the strenght of the Spanish Language itself. Unlike most universities in Asia, in Latin America the strength of the language is preventing Universities from joining the wider international community, reducing most to low ranks and preventing solid peer reviews and referencing. I hope in future episodes you mention the role Alfonso X had in this, formalizing Castilian into a proper language which could be use for legal purposes instead of Latin. A vision that culminates with the first modern novel being published in Castilan (which now carried the name of Spanish, showing its dominance): Don Quijote de la Mancha.

22:13 Correction Ireland DOESN’T derive from the word Aryan! The name of Erin or Ireland, the home of the Eri, or Irish. This modern name is a contracted form. Its root in old Keltic seems to have been Iver, which is the same as the Sanskrit avara, “western.” It appears in the Latin Avernus, a famous lake on the west coast of Italy, as well as in Ivernia, or Hibernia, the western island. This old word Iver has been shortened to Ir or Er, and out of this, by putting on their own terminations, the English have made Ire-land, the home of the Ir-ish, or “westerners.”

@@sakshamvikram7517 It does seem to have some sanskrit connotations though, but not avara, but pivari meaning abundant as in "land of abundance" probably a reference to its green fields. Avara means younger/inferior from what I have gathered. Im educated in history but can't say sanskrit or ireland are fields I have worked with or studied to any length so I can of course be completely off target. :)

In fourteen hundred ninety two Columbus sailed the ocean blue - That's how the little ditty goes and we have the SIERRA NEVADA MOUNTAINS in our Western United States. The geography of the peninsula is interesting with its' narrow valleys and rugged mountains. Love to know what some commen names are, on the peninsula as there is family from and relatives living on the IBERIAN PENINSULA. Lovely documentary, thank you ❤

One thing I think needs mentioning that that the 'Hispania' has been said to have come from the Phoenicians which meant 'land of rabbits' for the Iberian Peninsula was mostly composed of very dense forests back then!

Not bad. One (minor) detail I would point out is that the Iberian culture was seemingly not North African. Their undecifered language is not afrasiatic, genetically they seem very closely related to the Celtiberians and their art and religion seems heavily influenced by Canaanite culture. Georgeos Montesinos has written a book or two about a possible Altaic/Turkic origin of the Iberian language, with a number of very plausible translations of Iberian inscriptions and texts.

@@loreamar3 Sorry, just seen your reply. By "Iberian" I meant the culture and language of a specific ancient people we now call Iberians, "Iberos" in spanish. Not to be confused by the english term "Iberians" which refers to anyone living on the Iberian peninsula, whether it be today or thousands of years ago. You'll notice the article uses "ibéricos" and "iberos" seemingly interchangeably, which I would say is a mistake. In any case, the genetics of skeletons tells us little about language and culture. The Iberian engravings and scripts can be read phonetically but are in an unknown language, almost definitely not Afroasiatic or Indoeuropean in origin. That was my point.

@@yamchathewolf7714 we don't know where the Iberians came from. They are seemingly genetically related to other Iberian peoples of the time, so one possibility is that a small warrior class arrived from somewhere else and was assimilated into the native tribes, but keeping their foriegn language and culture. The idea that they came from North Africa is an old one, and both genetics and archaeology seem to disprove this. Like I said, their language is not related to the berber language or any afroasiatic language. Celtic is actually closer to an afroasiatic language than Iberian. There are clues though. For one thing there are striking similarities with Turkic languages, and there is some central Asian genetics in Spain (although this isn't too clear to me). The ancient Greeks also believed the Iberians came from the Black Sea, from the other Iberia. The Spaniards and Portuguese are still very closely related to the ancient inhabitants of Iberia, who in turn were a mix of Ice Age hunter gatherers, Anatolian farmers and Indo-European speaking peoples like the Celts.

About the Basques, take a look at Almagro Gorbea's works. He is the top Spanish specialist in Celtic and Basque history and archaeology in Ancient times in the Iberian Península. Basque on his mother side. There is a lot to talk about Basques and their myths that even some of them are treated as history, and it is a subject in which to thread carefully...

Catalonia and the Basques are given too much importance when talking about times when they were not so important or did not even exist as political territories. The Basques were in fact a marginal mountainous region and Catalonia did not appear until medieval times ad just as a sub-region of the Kingdom of Aragon. I suppose that happens because foreigners hear too much about the current political problems in Spain and transfer it to history, but in fact it does not correspond to historical facts.

This is very interesting. I did a DNA test recently, and I found out that I have high percentages of Portuguese and Northern Spain (Galicia, Asturias, and Basque) and there was also some Germanic and Scandinavian DNA in there as well. I love learning about our Celtic and Germanic heritage

My Cuban ancestry is Galician, Castilian and Catalan. ///Me pops is from Ecuador .Andean (>1/4) , Andalucian/Arab/Berber (Muslim) and there is 1.5% Italian, 0.4 % Finnish and...0.7 % kike 🤮. 0.1% Sub-Saharan African via the Arab side. I look Chechen, Levantine or Balkan. I have no olive skin and the Injun gives me that Caucasus look, aka Anatolian/Levantine. Refined Pre Revolution Cuban Spanish is my first language, then murican (NYC) English, Brazilian Portuguese, Standard Italian and Central Catalan. Some Turkish as a foreign language.

Eurico is also the Hispano-Gothic variant of Euric (which is the Visigothic variant of Eric/Erik). As for your commentary regarding Visigothic impact in Hispania, it’s important to bear in mind that, at the time the Visigoths crosses the Pyrenees, they were already one of the most heavily Romanized Germanic groups of the migration period. In many ways, they viewed themselves as the heirs of Romans and were actually more successful in ‘Romanizing’ Celtiberian pagans like the Astures and Cantabri than the Romans themselves (who were largely unsuccessful in assimilating said tribes and only temporarily succeeded in pacifying them).

The problem with the Visigoths unfortunately was that they never got their "constitution" right and just fought among themselves when they should have unite. For their squabling they paid a price most peoples don't pay and that's, in my opinion, why we as a species squable more than e unite.

The Swabians abandoned Arianism to become Catholics in Braga, Portugal, the city which Octavio Augusto defined as the capital of Galaecia and where the Suevi established their only capital in all history. It was San Martin of Braga also known as Martin of Dume, in the Concilium of Braga in 572 ac, that influenced the Germanic Suevos to abandon Arianism for Catholicism!

When the county of Portugal became independent from the Kingdom of Leon, which had repopulated it after its reconquest, Galaecia was divided in two: Galicia ( to the north ) remained in Leon ( modern Spain) and the Leon county of Portocale extended towards the Saracen south, forming modern Portugal.

I have a hypothesis for the ceceo of Castilian.....most ancient Germanic languages had the TH sound/letter (thurisaz) and when spoken you can here the TH sound in those Germanic languages.... in the Castillian ceceo or "lisp" for the letter C and Z it could have been an adaptation to the more popular Latin language usage. Also, Guerra is a latin adaptation from the Germanic (mainly Frankish) word for War (Werra) same applies to Guard=- Guardia ,soldiers were known as guards hence the word Warden (the main guardian)

4:43 Correction the Pyrenees has NOT traditionally divided Iberia from France (or it’s kingdom’s). Examples: From 440s - 507 The Visigothic Kingdom (capital in Toulouse) completely stretched over the entire mountain range. From 507-713 The Visigothic Kingdom still controlled Septimania on the French side of the Pyrenees. From 785-987 The Frankish Kingdom ruled the Spanish March on the Spainish side of the Pyrenees. From 987-1162 The County of Barcelona ruled Septimània on the French side of the Pyrenees From 1162-1469 The Kingdom of Aragón ruled Septimània on the French side of the Pyrenees. From 1469-1659 The Spanish Empire ruled Septimània on the French side of the Pyrenees. So In roughly the last 1600 years the Pyrenees has only been the border for about 400 which is about 25% of the time. 25% of the time should not be considered traditionally, just saying.

As an Iberian myself (Portuguese), your knowlwdge about it is not super, but quite ok for an American :) ...you did mention some of the most important historical facts, you spoke well, your history level is reasonable ( minus only because European History is just too vast for you and surely for youtube...), and you did manage to get everyone else a good grip of what those times in history brought to civilization.. so I thank you for that! :) However...I do did not enjoy how often you refer to Iberians as Spain.... since Portugal is far older than the country of Spain... Of course "We Europeans" could give you some very interesting other details :)))

During the 1st millennium BC, in the Bronze Age, the first wave of migrations into Iberia of speakers of Indo-European languages occurred. These were later (7th and 5th centuries BC) followed by others that can be identified as Celts. Eventually urban cultures developed in southern Iberia, such as Tartessos, influenced by the Phoenician colonization of coastal Mediterranean Iberia, with strong competition from the Greek colonization. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hispania#Pre-Roman_history

They did not move upwards from North Africa. There is absolutely no connection of the people of Iberia to Africa. None whatsoever.

Right? There were some historians that believed they were once Berbers of North Africa. Iberians are mostly closely related to the Greeks and other Mediterranean Europeans.

@@InfernalLeo777 Yup. Ancient Iberians were proto-indo Europeans, closely related to other Mediterranean Europeans. It’s also no coincidence that in 2007 there was a study done where it was shown that modern Iberians carry the most ancient European dna than all of Europe. On top of all that since the celts resided in mostly in central and northwest of Iberia, the majority of Spaniards have their genes from them also, about 70% on average given that the celts and Iberians mostly mixed together and created an ethnogenesis for the people in Iberia.

@AK cristo Hispania is where Spain's name originally comes from. It was given by the Romans to the whole Iberian peninsula. In Spanish it is pronounced Espania. The only difference is the Hi in the beginning. But it is quite minor. Spain (Hispania) has been around longer than Portugal. Portugal is not older than Spain. The Portuguese were Hispanians (Spaniards) way back before they became Portugal and later an independent country. Even if the Portuguese don't accept that fact. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hispania

@@luismarques9280 Hispania was founded by the Romans and established back in 218 b.c. Hispania is where Spain got its name from. Portugal, Gibraltar, and Andorra were also part of Spain way back. Portugal didn't even exist at the time of the Romans. Have you seen Gladiator where Russel Crowe, a Roman Centurion general was a fugitive and concealed his identity as a Spaniard in the movie Gladiator? He sure didn't call himself a Portuguese. Because there were no Portuguese back then. He called himself a Spaniard , a Hispanian by trying to conceal his Roman identity. So Hispania (Spain) is older. Portugal, Andorra and Gibraltar were established afterwards.

Espanha era o nome dado pelos Romanos à península ibérica. Mais tarde, durante a reconquista cristã, os reis destas terras queriam ser os reis de toda a Espanha. O nome do maior reino apenas evoluiu para espanha. Tiveste por exemplo um rei de Aragão que já se considerava "o rei de toda a espanha". Se formos a ver isto com a visão Romana então sim, somos todos espanhóis. Mas nós somos espanhóis portugueses e eles são espanhóis castelhanos... Claro que neste assunto temos de ter em conta o contexto histórico quando falamos destas designações.

It's the most important and relevant country in the penninsula. The Roman name "Hispania", for Iberia, is the root for Spain as a name. On top, Spain makes 85% of the penninsula and has 80% of the population. Portugal is simply irrelevant so people forget about it.

Our history does NOT! begin with "SPANIA" or "HISPANIA" or Al-ANDALUZ. But it does begin 4500-1260bc with descendants of NOAH who first settled there. Many immigrants and invaders, exploiters, conquerors, came later 1182bc-to-AD 1800s. It is these who have written the History of Hispania.

Tolousse is in southern France and was the first Visigothic capital before it was moved to Toledo in central Spain. Incidentally, there is also a city in Spain called Tolosa or Navas de Tolosa, deriving from Tolousse. A very important and decisive battle against the moors ocurred there, btw

Hispânia and Spain are not the same thing. There was no country called Spain until 1492 at the earliest. Although Hispânia is rather interchangeable with Iberia, the term Iberia is a much better descriptor of the region. Portuguese, Galicians, Catalans and Basques are not Hispanics in any way, but they are all Iberians, and proudly so. And you have Gibraltar and Andorra, two mico-nations that would never identify as belonging to Hispânia. To avoid all confusion and ethnic pearl clutching, just use Iberia instead of Hispânia. For example the Kingdom of the Visigoths had most of the territorry on modern day Spain but esse also on modern day Portugal
