"I will gladly die for my cause! What will you sacrifice for yours?" Just the look of shame and regret on Matt's face... The things he's sacrificed.....

He's the only person who could have called her bluff on being the last of her species. He still remained kind and respectful through the whole thing.

2:03 this line is incredible. Matt Smith’s delivery of it is phenomenal. there is so much calm rage there, anger beyond comprehension. the darkness hiding in the doctor’s heart and here he just begins to let it show before hiding again behind excessive hand movements and quick talking.

"I'll gladly die for my cause. What will you sacrifice for yours?" The look on the Doctor's face... You can just see he's thinking of the Time War. How he sacrificed his own people to save everyone else. He sacrificed his own name, his own morals, his own title... There is grief and pain in that brief smile. God, Matt, how the hell can you look like the oldest doctor when you're the youngest actor to play him?!?!

i love how she reacts when the doctor compliments her looks because ridding her species of thier mask is a big no, but the surprise on her face i love it because she wasnt expecting his reaction to her ...sad but powerful

I just realized that this story takes place in 2020 but the Doctor believes the population of Earth to be at 6 billion.

Though a bit abrasive, I've always found the Silurians quite a lovely species.

3:57. I look at that face and I can tell he's thinking "If you only knew..."

"What have you sacrificed for yours?!" Would've loved the doctor to turn and go "I am the last of my species."

0:08 This is why I love Rory; at this point he barely knows the Doctor (and even had some bad feelings towards him) and yet he's concerned for his safety. I'm not sure if it's because he knows Amy cares for the Doctor or he already considers him a friend, but it shows his benevolent nature.

Rewatching this now, I realize just how good Matt Smith was as the 11th doctor. It's like he channels all of past incarnations as one being. He has the curiosity of the 1st, the high energy of the 2nd, the calmness of the 3rd, and the sillyness of the 4th. Etc. Matt was truly amazing and I miss him greatly.

One of my absolute favorite scenes from Doctor Who. "You're really not. Because I'm the last of my species and I know how it sits in a heart. So don't insult me!"

That Peter Capaldi jump scare will never get old.

as much as I love Peter and Clara I will never stop missing Matt, Karen and Arthur.

"There will be no battle here today" Was it just me, or did that line and how Matt delivered it send chills of the Classic Era Doctors with that simple stern abrasive authority? Bloody brilliant!

"Because I'm the last of my species, and I know how that sits in a heart. So don't insult me" You tell that when he says that, she realizes that she isn't talking with a human right now, and that what he is saying is true. She realizes that it won't work so she stops lying. Just the acting overall from the both of them, the emotions, the inflections, everything, all top notch.

"I'd gladly die for my cause, what would you sacrifice for yours?" Ahhh, my dear girl if only you knew what he HAD already sacrificed for his beliefs

This two parter was the story that really nailed Matt Smith's doctor, he seems so child-like yet incredibly wise throughout it

I love when she stands, and the camera moves in such a way that he matches her in the foreground. But when next you get a full shot of him, he's still sitting down. So subtle in the moment... From the camera's/audience perspective it aids in highlighting the scene's psychology, because *of course* the Doctor doesn't need to be standing to maintain control of the situation. I adore the cinematography here.

"I will die for my cause; what will you sacrifice for yours!?" That sad, little smile there at the end was all it took to say: "I've already sacrificed everything... So many times..." Brilliant acting.

The first appearance of the Silurians since Pertwee's run in the early 70's. Always love a good comeback of an alien species :)

Matt Smith is My Doctor. Peter is Fab, but Matt, you could see the rage underneath thesurface, in his eyes, I don't know why, but he is the older of the Doctors, in his eyes, you see all the hurt that he's gone through in the Time War.

In my opinion Matt Smith was at his best in his first series and very different from his final 2. Watching this scene again reminds me of how much I preferred him in series 5. I still love all of his performances as the Eleventh Doctor though.

This is Matt's best scene as The Doctor, for sure. The calm, the curiosity, and the fire, ice, and rage hidden just beneath the surface. The peace, and the pain. It's akin to Capaldi's speech in 'The Zygon Inversion', but much more subtle (the stakes were higher in the former though).

I read the title as "the hungry doctor" S5 E1 in a nutshell

"Ill gladly die for my cause, what will you sacrifice for yours?" I love how the Doctor could've said something back, but his expression is of someone too exhausted and disillusioned to bother. In his eyes he's saying "If only you knew what that truly meant..."

I actually quite like this episode. It's not perfect, but I thought it was interesting. But the one thing that drives me crazy is the continued use of the term "Homo Reptilia." That is not what that taxonomic prefix means. "Homo" refers to the genus that all human species belong to, like Homo Sapiens (us), Homo Neanderthalensis, Homo Habilius, Homo Floresiensis, etc. Using that term suggests the Silurians, who are reptiles, are somehow related to humans, who are mammals. It's the "sapiens" part of the name that distinguishes them as being intelligent. Reptilia Sapiens would be a more accurate term. Any biologists and/or paleontologists watching this know what I'm talking about.

One of my favorite moments in this story. I never got why so many disliked this one.

The problem with doing a Silurian/sea devil episode is that you end with a pretty similar story every time

The fact when she asked what he sacrificed, and he said nothing...shows he understands what he's done, and his silence alone can let a whole room know it too and I love it so much

That one moment when she asks what he will sacrifice for his cause. He played that moment well because it shows the pain of what he sacrificed in the past during the time war as a previous regeneration.

makes me want to rewatch all the doctor whos again lol

I've been re-watching all of Matt's episodes this past week (whilst eating fish custard - of course) and it's made me feel so many emotions! I miss him so much! He was such an amazing Doctor and made it really easy to believe he was an alien with his weird love of bowties (which are still cool) and fezzes (also still cool) and the way you knew he admired the human race. Matt is an incredible actor and I love him to bits. 💙

Considering that this story takes place in 2020, it's a good thing that Doc didn't mention anything about the pandemic to Amy and Rory.

I miss the 11's theme music

I love that he's deliberately speaking slowly and exactly for most of the time, because he's a little angry, but he still doesn't want to scare her☺

Doctor: "You are beautiful." Eleya: : "OK, that's not what I was expecting..."

I rewatch the 11th Doctor whole series and the movies. Watching it now feels really Sad. Because of his face, his Goddamn beautiful face, you see the expression of pain and sadness and the memories of that sad past

This shows the genius of Matt as the Doctor... amazing acting

"I do hate to monologue" Seems like that changed with Capaldi, judging by Heaven Sent

The way his voice picks up when he says 'so don't insult me'. Gives me chills.

God Matt was such a good Doctor. He was the only on who could make bow ties cool 😂

In many ways, this is like the Midnight episode. Shows how scary humans can be when they’re scared. Thing is, this time the Doctor has companions

"so dont insult me!" gives me the chills, its soo good.

"I'll gladly die for my species. What will you sacrifice for yours?" I love the Doctor's little smile here because he could go off on one or monologue at her, but he doesn't. He knows that the response of "my entire species" isn't something you can explain in a few minutes and it's a day he tries to forget. Reminding himself of all the pain and suffering and loss he goes through day after day just for a woman who won't take any of it to heart is worthless. It's just a smile of "you have no idea."

That face the doctor makes after she asks him what would he sacrifice for his cause, its so.. MMFH! No words needed, just the expression itself speaks of a thousand words there. Perfection.

I know everyone’s gushing about the Doctor and his traumas. But I love how the writers find a way to explain continuity gaps in designs. New Doctor? He regenerated. Silurians and Daleks look funny? Upgrades and different evolutionary branch. Cyber men are even more different? Upgrades people! Upgrades!

The Doctor is really a lesson to us all. A case study in ethics and morality.

"What have you sacrificed for yours?" If only she knew how many times he sacrificed something for his cause.

I actually think this scene is what finallly made me like the Eleventh Doctor. Great performance by Mr. Smith.

I love when the theme plays. It's the "mess around and find out" theme.

I love how his grief was expressed through his silence. The Man who forgets doesn't even want to remember his sacrifices.

A very good scene in an altogether bad episode is my verdict. Despite that Matt's performance is, as always, gorgeous. I'll admit it took me a while to warm to him, I was just starting to like him here and it took me until The Big Bang to fall head-over-heels in love with him. Rewatching Series 5, this time without being blinded by Tennant nostalgia, has really helped to appreciate just how GOOD he was. I still miss him and he's shot to the top of my list as favourite Doctor.

Watched this episode yesterday... Matt Smith was a very good Doctor.

I always forget just how much I enjoy Series 5 and 6 until I revisit them. They really were Matt Smith in his prime as the Doctor.

You know we're getting old because when this episode aired it was set 10 years in the future in 2020, but now it's in the past

i think this is one of the few rare times the villain of the episode was not who or what everyone thought it was.

So I'm watching this and the date of this was to be set in 2020 and we just got to 2020

I quite liked him as the doctor. Usually very calm makes him look like he is in control of the situation

I have a friend who really didn't like Matt Smith playing the Doctor but I just watch a scene like this and I don't know why. I think his performance is great and he is able to channel so much into just his body and face. I took me a few episodes to warm up to Peter as the Doctor but by the end of the 11th Hour I totally brought Smith in the role.

I always thought the "last of my species" thing was a bit stupid. I mean... She came up to the surface with two others, so she obviously wasn't alone...

that look he gives after she says "i'll gladly die for my cause, what will you sacrifice for yours." Not only has the Doctor caused many people to die for him, but he's also sacrificed so much more than she ever has or ever will. quite sad.

I have to write an essay on Silurian period and here I am for the reference. I leave no excuse to watch any clip of Dr. Who.

I love episodes like this one. These stories make it very clear how much of the universe isn't black and white, but rather, shades of gray.

When ever you meet the doctor it's best to just do what he says.

It's to bad BBC pulled Doctor Who from Netflix and Hulu.

"I think I've met these creatures before! Different branch of the species, they weren't quite as hot."

Anyone else think when he called.her beautiful that she had a visible look of shock and confusion mixed with a rad bit of flusteredness (I know that's not a word but work with me here)

That last attempted jab where the doctor just smirks back and thinks "I sacrificed my species and my homeworld, your life means absolutely nothing compared to that"

When the Doctor brokered a peace between Humanity and the Zygons in the 50th Anniversary we had a follow-up two-parter in Season 9 that continued that story. Now in this Silurian two-parter, it ends with them going back to sleep for 1000 years because they world isn't ready to share both species. Considering these episodes were written by Chris Chibnall, do we reckon we'll get follow-up episodes when he takes over as showrunner?

She turned out to be such a great character, I loved her reappearances. Or just a great actress, not sure which.

Do love the fact the head resembles "SLIGHTLY" (before I get attacked by offended Doctor who fans) of a turian from mass effect

Long live Doctor Who! I really like the way Peter Capaldi is telling us to subscribe at the end of the video.

The way he said “So don’t insult me.” You could feel the anger rising. And the look on his face as she ask what will he sacrifice. You could tell he viewed her as nothing more than a child.

I do love the 11th Doctor. When Alaya asks "what will you do for your cause?" He just does that sad little smile because that's the point. He's the Doctor. He has no cause, he only has one real enemy (the Daleks). He sees the bigger picture and the affects of all actions. He has no side in this "war" because all he wants is the people back and peace between the humans and the Silurians. He's not directly involved because he is from neither species, but because he asks for the humans, the Silurians automatically put him on the opposing side. As he says in series 7 he "walked away from the last Great Time War". This is a squabble to him, in one lonely corner of a small country on a small planet. He has no side. He just wants peace because he's seen (and done) mass destruction and mass hate. What hurts him is when he has to make horrific decisions so peace will prevail (for example, 10 in "The Fires of Pompeii"). That's what the smile is.

OMG I was just watching this episode and thought I should check the doctor who channel and boom!

To be honnest. I think the doctor highlighted in the video should do the closer. Its not that i don't like Capaldi, its just a bit odd that you abruptly see his face after a nice little trip to the past.
