Get the FREE One-Month Day checklist here: www.flowstate.com/onemonthday Rían here. Thanks for watching! Turns out, achieving that "in the zone" feeling isn't random. It's a cycle with four phases. With the science-backed techniques in this PDF, you can master entering and exiting the flow cycle several times a day to exceed a month’s worth of work in 11 hours.

Dharana (one step lower than the state of meditation/Zen) is required to be in the state of flow. Meditative state or zen state is an advanced state where people can naturally stay in the flow state for extremely longer period of times and direct these flow state in every aspect of life.

We are not supposed to interrupt ourselves during the struggle phase as it resets the flow cycle, but that's exactly what the release phase is about: diverting your attention from the task at hand. How do we know when to go (or when we have gone) from the struggle phase to the release phase? Also, how is it that the Release phase, which is essentially an interruption from what you're doing, helps you attain Flow State, while any other interruption before the Release phase (during the Struggle phase) resets the flow cycle?

0. Avoidance - challenging yourself to do something productive (from no task to productive one) 1. Struggle - stress trying to push you away from the task (need to be experience and pass thru it) - Beta wave 2. Release - period of relaxation and comfort (subconscious take over from conscious effort) - Alpha wave 3. FLOW - increasing in creativity, focus and pattern recognition (release of dopamine, serotonin, endorphin, oxytocin ) - Theta wave 4. Recovery - active and passive (physical and mental exercises)

Struggle stage is all about conscious, intentional effort. Release stage is about releasing the will-full effort and allowing your mind to naturally, subconsciously create new neural pathways that support the effort you just put in so that when you return to the task, it’s not as much of a struggle. Seems to me that these 2 stages are interchangeable until we reach a level of mastery upon which time flow-state becomes more accessible

This video was very informative and helpful. I learned a lot about the flow cycle and how to use it to improve my focus and productivity. I especially liked the tips on how to enter the struggle phase, which is often the most challenging and frustrating one for me. I also appreciated the examples and exercises that the speaker gave to illustrate each phase. Thank you for sharing this valuable knowledge with us.

I have a question, What if the boulder you are pushing is lighter? What if the struggle is not a struggle because how easy it is? Will you not able to reach flow state?

How do you destinguish between the release phase and simply letting go of the task too early? How do you properly identify phase 2?
@faberportone
@faberportone Год назад
Struggle phase - conscious effort Flow - effortless effort I see the release phase as the switch between these two. Basically when you struggle you have 2 choices: - go a little further and get to ‘the other side’ - give up (which is not a release phase) Hope it helps, I think it’s a highly subjective experience and the more we experience it the better we become at recognise it

@@faberportone do we have to consciously take a break during the release phase? or could we go from struggle to flow directly without that break?
@faberportone
@faberportone 10 месяцев назад
@@dairminera We can! Think of surfing. The whole cycle can be so quick we don't even realise: -Struggle: I'm paddling to catch the wave -Release: I pop up -Flow: I ride the wave Mihaly talks about micro flow and macro flow, and for me that means that we also have micro cycles and macro cycles
@dairminera

@@faberportone I’ve never surfed before so it’s hard to envision that. Do I take a 5 min break to relax when I’m in the release stage? How do I know I’m getting out of the struggle phase and entering the release stage?

Wow, wonderful explanation! I've watched all of your videos, this one really broke down the whole flow cycle in a simple step-by-step way. Thank you for sharing! I have one question - how long should one flow cycle last from start to finish? I know you said that 4-5 hours is the max we can work in flow state in a day. Does that breakdown to two 2 hour flow cycles (including struggle and recovery phase)? I'm a little confused...
