A simple fix for the rear end of our 152,000 mile E92 M3?
As this project has gone on we've isolated and fixed many flaws with the car, but it's become more and more obvious just how poor the rear end suspension is! The car has stability on the rear axle, meaning lack of traction and exaggerated movement when pushing on.
Many people upgrade the subframe bushes on these cars, but being high mileage we wanted to investigate a cheaper fix, the easier to change rear suspension arms. Could this cure the problems we are having?
Parts Changed:
Rear Toe Arms - 33322283549 x2
Upper Wishbone - 33322283545 / 33322283546
Front Guide Rod - 33322283547 / 33322283548

Incremental changes and reviewing the results at each step is more useful to the viewers. Great idea for a video series. Hope to see similar done on other cars when this M3 is finished!

Another great video guys! I remember a few years ago before I did my Rod bearings on my 2009 E-92 with 82 k miles on it when I had it in my local BMW dealer in Vermont for the heater recall. They told me that the rod bearings are not an issue on these cars to not worry about it. I found that very strange. That’s why I find your videos so helpful for any E-92 M3 owner. So thank you!

That shiny leather on the steering wheel calls for a new custom rewrapped one from Royal Steering Wheels. If you are dropping the rear subframe, then the exhaust has to come down. So it is a good time to replace the two-piece driveshaft. If you hear a metallic clunk when shifting into drive or reverse then a worn driveshaft is the source. You can really hear the clunk in a parking garage. The BMW unit has 3 parts to replace...front rubber Guibo donut, Center Bearing, and the rear CV joint. To save money, just replacing the center bearing usually does the trick....but inspect the rubber Guibo. You have to replace all the bolts too. Turner Motorsports sells a rebuilt unit that has a serviceable U-Joint. The BMW unit U-Joint between the two halves isn't serviceable and is a source of noise and failure.
@harrywilkinson444

Now you've got my listening for clunks haha, would you hear it if the car was in the air? I'll probably look at this preventatively when I do the rear end underside restoration in the future.

Nice video Imran. Totally agree on the comment RE loading it up settles it down. One of the BEST things I did on mine was to fit a set of Powerflex (Purple) Diff bushes. The difference was remarkable in how much more sure footed it felt. Never got around to the subframe bushes due to the labour involved. Slight increase in NVH/whine with the Purple Poly bushes around 55mph, but the tradeoff with how much more settled it felt was worth it.

🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷👏🏻👏🏻, Well, an awesome way to discover and find out what this car really needs in terms of its suspension. Breaking it down into parts what this suspension really needs, as you experience the car right after each modification, and at the same time, you are compare it to your red M3, which has the perfect example of what a good suspension should be. This way you can see not only what are the steps to making it work better, but also know how much you are really spending on it …

If you really feel the rear end is too loose, you may want to go to polyethylene rear subframes mounts. You can go solid, but NVH may well be too intense. I would have done that first as it is the base for everything else. Now you will have repeat labor for disconnecting your newly installed links. Do attend to the differential mounts also at the same time. An adjustable rear toe link is a nice addition, too.

Off topic but do you guys feel that changing the fuel injectors preventatively is necessary for the S65? I saw a video today discussing relatively common failure rates and I had never heard that before... only on the S85 🤔
@MikelDog

It's all about fuel quality and whether the fuel filter is serviced. Injectors fail because the baskets degrade. They'll only degrade if anything foreign passes through that ain't fuel

It’s something we’re keeping an eye on at the moment, don’t consider it common, but if you wanted to be 100% changing the injectors and fuel pump (for the filter) would be a good idea.

Loving this series Imran. My M2 covered many trackdays from new each year and a total of 36k in 3.5 years of ownership, now that I have replaced it with a practically new M2C (2000 miles) I can certainly feel the difference an almost identical car feels like with fresh arms and bushes compared to a 36k car (with relatively hard miles) feels like and I’d be inclined to change bushes (as well as dampers) at around 40/50k depending on use. Having owned many used cars with varying mileage of 50 - 100k they could all have used a freshen up a lot sooner than 152k. I can only imagine the previous owner of this M3 either thought they all drove like that or that this one was a bit crap! Look forward to the next one 👍🏻
@EvolveAutomotive
@EvolveAutomotive 2 года назад
I think that is the problem. If people come from a lesser car they will think its better than what they had but don't know what it should really be like. I agree with you 36k hard miles would definitely need a refresh!

Truthfully we have not gone to that level so cannot advise fully, would do some research and identify what needs to be upgraded. I know on the front arm changing that to a spherical bush rather than rubber is popular. It's something we may look to in the future, but this would be focusing the car further for track use rather than road.

The main takeaway from this episode is: chances are suspension components and bushings fail together in the same time. Rather than repair step by step, should just do all at one go and save some labour in terms of repetitive work, and just get one alignment at the other end rather than 3 like you will have to do so eventually.
@EvolveAutomotive
@EvolveAutomotive 2 года назад
We are doing this in stages as a learning exercise, to try and figure out if there are certain areas that make more improvements than others. We aren’t suggesting an owner copies our exact route, but that we can advise people better from our gained knowledge.

Anytime you torque suspention components, you need to pre-load them. One way is to use an engine/transmission jack and "load" the part, the other is on the jack, but never torque them "freely", just premature stressing new bushings. Should had just dropped the rear subframe and changed those bushings as well. Now you are doing the work twice and wheel alignment again, makes no sense to me.
@EvolveAutomotive
@EvolveAutomotive 2 года назад
Correct, and you can see us do that, as we do whenever torquing up suspension bushings. We are doing this in stages to show incremental change and find out what components actually make a difference. At the end of this process we will be able to more accurately advise customers.
@hussamjamil4980
@hussamjamil4980 2 года назад
@@EvolveAutomotive My mistake, since i did not see the pre-loading of components when torqueing. Well yes, but if it is the original, replacing one arm/bushing makes no sense. Just "do it once, do it right" mentality.
@EvolveAutomotive

No, but the mentality of change everything all at once is often a shotgun technique when just a few components actually require changing. We aren’t suggesting anyone follow our exact steps. This car is a research tool for ourselves, and at the end of the project we will layout our findings.
