According to classical physics and the laws of Isaac Newton, it should be easy to predict the behaviour of objects throughout the universe with relative ease.

But in 1961, a meteorologist unwittingly discovered this was not the case - that there was a lot more uncertainty around us. Here's how chaos theory and its butterfly effect, has changed the way we think about our Universe.

Very nice video. A small addtion to 3:31 when you say "long-term prediction is impossible". Yes, chaotic dynamics make predicting the state of a system at a certain point in the far future close to impossible, but it is actually very possible to predict the average state of the system over a long period of time. For example the Lorenz system is chaotic and it's impossible to know excatly where the system will be after a long time, but since the trajectories follow the butterfly-shaped curves (technically called "Lorenz attractor"), we can predict the average state of the system over a long enough duration. This subtle distinction is VERY important because it addresses one of the main "concerns" of climate change deniers who say how can we predict the rise in temperature 2 decades in the future if we cannot prdict the weather 2 weeks in advance? The answer is, as above, it is impossible to know where the system will exactly be at an exact point in time, but it is actually relatively easy to know the average of the system long into the future and over long periods of time.

If not Einstein, it simply would have been someone else. History was ready for these new theories and many were on the cusps of the same results. The individuals didn't matter. Little would be different now, if anything. Each person's influence fades out with time like waves on a pond. As with most of these, "simple" is another word for "incomplete" and "inaccurate".
@zerologic7912
@zerologic7912 2 месяца назад
Agreed, the scenario leans too heavily on a Great Man theory of history, when in reality events in history are always caused by a multitude of individual, social, and other forces. This doesnt invalidate chaos theory in any way however, since you could say that these historical developments represent attractors that the chaotic system of history would tend toward.

Perhaps but things might be delayed just like how the industrial revolution might have happened earlier if the environment was just right for the Roman empire but it didn't happen thousands of years later the environment emerged and happened in Britain which kickstared the industrial revolution thus emerged the British empire.
@AlChLu
@AlChLu 2 месяца назад
@@carlrodalegrado4104 Such is unlikely. One of the major prerequisites of the European Industrial Revolution comes in the centuries of developments in mathematical rigor. Indeed, not only did the Romans possess an extremely primitive form of mathematics so much so that many Italian mathematicians later would dedicate entire treatise to the greater efficiency of Eastern arithmetical systems (see for instance the treatise of "Fibonacci"), but that the "charlatans" of the late Qing Dynasty, in their attempts to mimic the steam engine, had at best provided "toys", like those of the ancient periods, that were orders of magnitudes less capable (one notes that the charlatans were to be contrasted with those of the so-called "self-strengthening movement" of the late Qing Dynasty who attained actual engineering successes, and one of the first subtleties they had identified comes in mathematical optimization, including in contexts of millimeter precisions that which are provided by the machine tools of the period). One notes the applications of various methods, including in variations of Green's theorem, or in the use of such devices as the planimeter, in the context of optimizing steam engines when making use of so-called "work diagrams". Mathematical rigor, and the Newtonian interpretation of physics (to be contrasted with the "Keplerians" and the Persian predecessors who were mostly heuristically driven as opposed to first-principles driven), had demonstrated to be important prerequisites in, say, the determination between a steam-engine driven ironclad ship loaded with significant artillery and ammunition, and that of a wooden paddle-boat (for instance, see such engineering notions as the "load line", where Newtonian interpretations, coupled with further developments in mathematical rigor, had provided new classes of computations to engineers that which were far more effective and efficient). The Roman Empire lacked the necessary mathematical and scientific prerequisites, although toy models could be provided, they are not industrial machines.

can't put 'Simple' there mate. Einstein understanding of amending classical physics to the modern one we use today would have took a completely new level of perception. Just like how one man changed the perception and made things easy for other physicist to understand the universe would have not been easy and would take another century or millennia to work out solution for. There still are problems paradox and conjecture in mathematics and physics that we don't yet fully understand and has been lying for centuries but say a man found a solution would save us more time pondering over the solution. You are right some other guy would have done it but the questions is when?

I think this video contains quite a few misunderstandings and confusions. 1:31 Chaos theory does NOT question the deterministic vision of classical physics. Chaos theory studies the deterministic behaviours of physics or mathematics that are very sensitive to the initial conditions. What really questioned the classical physics was quantum theory, which is completely probabilistic. 3:15 She brought up a statement that sounds like the quantum mechanical limitation of measurement but it is not the main reason why some phenomena are difficult to predict. Of course we cannot know the state of every atom at infinite accuracy, but it is mainly the mathematical structure of the equation of motion that makes some motions difficult to predict in a long term. People with more knowledge in chaos theory might be able to point out more, so if you find anything weird in this video, please write it in the reply.

Is it the errors in multiple models which should have had the same values that created the butterfly effect ? Or was it the graph of one weather model that created the butterfly effect observation ? That is unclear to me
@unidentified7164
@unidentified7164 2 месяца назад
@@ojkwame I am sure it is about using the same mathematical model, but with slightly different initial conditions (or parameters). Maybe more straightforward example where chaos appears is a double pendulum; if you release a double pendulum with a slightly different angle, their behaviour significantly diverges after a couple of seconds.

the majority of weather models were predicting Hurricane Beryl to be a Cat 3 then cross the Yucatan peninsula and make landfall in Mexico. Instead it became the first ever Cat4 in late June and the earliest ever Cat5 in July. It did cross the Yucatan peninsula but then strengthened and veered further north into southern Texas. Both weather and climate modeling deteriorate rapidly over time.

Chaos Theory according to you the Universe follow the cause and effect, a knowledge Satan observed and used often as he saw his benefit on that to propell himself. That's his know how of that, aside from other knowledge he oftentimes ignore as he seemed irrelevant because he likes the Biggies, the Macrothings, he forgot what God said, " the small things are greater than the largest", simple explanation, what constitute the big stars and galaxies in space which makes that work and move, you can make a guess, and that's only the surface knowledge of that. Chaos, why chaos, according to you there's slight time variation from an alteration of what's previous wherein everything become copycat of that as the cause and effect. It's because there's a study that were living in a 3 Dimensional world. Why 3? Of course that shall be sourced from the reason why everything was created, it's origin and the Real beings involved. God the Creator, His only begotten Son, the Holy Spirit, and everything created follow that Source of beings in essence and spirituality. Why Transfiguration, why 2 is to 1 from that parallelism. Because of the Father of Spirits God. Meaning Elijah have deeper meaning and Moses have deeper meaning the reason why as the dove land on Jesus shoulder the Father God said follow and obey my Son. The reason why Satan and Archangel Michael fought for the body of Moses because the name and word Moses have deeper meaning and the Angel Michael and Satan have both deeper meaning. If you will look at the surface the surface shall answer you, if you look at the depth or deeper that will answer you the way you tune your mindset to a reality of what your mindset comprehend for the time being the way your mindset shall be in that state of mind if you will stay that way of thinking. The Holy Spirit speaks primarily of the Spiritual then every wisdom created because the Holy Spirit was present when God and his Son created everything, read the scriptures and you will find they were 2 of them in Creation. The Son of Man is being human not just in appearance but in the heart and mind but he wasn't limited to that really, but being human in heart and mind is the start of the wholeness of a being and spirituality to the better. Know what Satan and Angel Michael represents in connection to Moses and youre closer to comprehension, know what Moses and Elijah represents in connection to Jesus, and know why in scriptures it was said by Christ " No one comes to the Father except through me, and why Jesus said I am the way and the Life no one comes to the Father except through me." Scientifically if time had beginning and end there's a median the present time, and if there's to and fro of time of like a pendulum there's O'clock in every angle of the pendulum, what's then are the cause and effect, of course the marbles hit by a marble to another marble of a pendulum of to and fro of time, what then are the marbles, the end marble from the start marble are our usual mindset to the later mindset then from the latest mindset as a new start to another end of that progressive mindset if progressive or becoming worst copycats. Mindset. States. States of Mind. Why? Because it's up there in the mind and body interaction, mind has electricity so is the heart moving the body with such. Mind have waves and frequencies and time have indentation, to what's your attraction point from the reference point because it creates weight in concentration the way there's mass in gravity, not just sins cause weight but states of minds. How can we then define the effects of chaos. It either conserve time in gravity, it either become chaos and creations of good or bad, better or worst, it either becoming simultaneously preo ccupied in thinking of so many things to do first because of knowledge accumulation of a being at versed with so many topics in speaking of a busy type intellect of not actually showy and the chaos internally of a composed mind thinking of control most of the time wherein he himself unknowingly being controlled by his uncontrolled sigma male hideous mindset of a chaos within the silence like how Einstein explained of the velocity and parallel movement of someone in a Train with other beings inside the carriage and someone horse back riding outside a train one enclosed one in open space, one observed, one not observed inside, expound in science prior to delving to the 3 dimensional Earth wherein Earth in Solar System said by experts to have singularity the reason why almost everyone on Earth wants to be number one but actually there's a 3 in them of not in particular order depends on mindset as the other 2 converged.

Your English provides an incorrect assumption. Einstein's work would EVENTUALLY have been duplicated and it is meaningless to speak of probabilities and actual inventions AFTER a sufficiently efficient butterfly behavior. A guesstimate of speculative or hypothetical nature: the new history might have taken ? long to duplicate. WW2 might not have happened at all....or rather an analogous conflict. Hirohito could have won antiwar fight in 1930s. Mussolini could have choked on linguini in 1928. Jews might have stayed in Germany....enough time after cause, the more and more incalculably unpredictable. Manyway fun have. What and which whyevs.

He did plagiarize much of his work from other. There were several other versions of relativity and general relativity out prior to Einstein. But GPS for example doesn't even use Special or General Relativity but assumes the speed of light to be a constant to the observer regardless of reference frame. But advances in GPS precision is due implementing a Lorentz version or the invariance and abandoning standard clock synchronization otherwise known as Einstein synchronization. They have not only found that the speed of light does vary but is completely due to the motion of the observer WRT the magnetic field, supporting Lorentz or Maxwell, not Einstein.

You may be able determine the speed of a particle. You may also be able to determine the position of the very same particle. However, by definition, if a particle has position then it has no speed. Similarly, if it has speed than it has no position. Vectors, I hear you say? Oh, please!!! You can not, therefore, simultaneously determine both speed and position. This makes accurate prediction impossible. It may be that a chain of events is predetermined, but ya just gotta wait to see how it all shakes out. Although, to be honest, I don't really know what a particle is, so my foundational basis for spouting off is shaky. Does anyone else believe that the Universe is the Creator, and created itself? I feel it has a much higher degree of plausibility than all those nonsensical origin stories that depend on obedience and money for survival, i.e. religion.

This video does a great job of breaking down chaos theory! 🌪 One key takeaway is how even minor events can have far-reaching consequences, which is crucial to understand in various fields. I think it's also important to recognize that while chaos complicates predictions, it doesn’t mean we can't identify patterns. For anyone interested in practical applications, consider how this theory can help in decision-making or risk management in business.

Sorry, but not very accurate, or true. Unpredictability of outcomes derives from the inherent instability of apparently stable structures. Entropy rules in our universe. At times, stable structures can arise due to the energy expended by living beings, and other forces/agents of energy, that create more stable forms, but the inherent disorder we live in will always have its due. In the long run, we are all dead. The weather results from the interaction of an infinity of forces, particles, and spirits which are not possible to "model." The notion that one person, or a group of people, can use their combined energies to create a stable structure that predicts the weather, is a classic example of human hubris and myopic awareness.The unpredictability derives from our ignorance and limited understanding of how our universe works, not some theory of chaos. If these wannabe scientists can tie any proposed 'chaos theory' back to the fundamental uncertainty of quantum mechanics, then fine. Otherwise, please . .

The butterfly effect has very little effect within a regulated system, such as the planet Earth. Thus endless supplies of butterfly's on this planet have not led to daily unpredictable massively shocking chaotic outcomes. Meanwhile, capitalism, which does dictate a minimum wage, does not regulate maximum wage. Thus tiny butterfly effects here will lead to total disaster in the long run.

This video is totally misrepresenting the probabilistic nature of dynamic systems. Not to mention, due to the trends in science often makes different scientists (without knowing one other) work on same topics, so in case not one, then the oter will come up with a certain solution/theory/application/invention. Furthermore Einstrein and his theory of relativity is especially a very bad example because Finnish theoretical physicist Gunnar Nordström was also working on the topic.

The assumption of "we know how the universe works" is not right or an exaturation, actually we don't even know how much we don't know! And the "don't know" part is wayyy bigger than what "we know".

Chaos theory and it's butterfly effect has changed into bullshit theaory😂😂😂. Every change in present or future depends upon past ,still we humans haven't the wisdom to find this truth.😂😂😂😂😂.

Hers the real thing about butterfly effect, sure things that are known to exist become historical. But it’s only mans imagination that makes up different scenarios. If Einstein had not existed another man likely would derive his results, through out history only the man who climbed Everest first wins notoriety, while many men after and before tried and succeeded. Chaos theory is a better thought because everything has no true path, or least is harder predict.

The last sentence makes sense.. our knowledge about the universe is very much limited. Butterfly effect is in all our daily tasks,words and behaviours. This can be taken to measure how climate changes caused by humans greedy expansion as well

The stability of the Universe is because of String Theory Super Symmetry. Not even chaos could exist without them ;-) **EINSTEIN**

Really? These men of “science” take decades to understand the most simple principles of the universe, something you can understand after a couple of meditation sessions. Keep the good work Western “wise” men.

Use a time machine to move a quark out of place in an atom in a grain of sand on a beach 1000 years ago, and this is enough to change all human history and everything from that point. Everything you do means something, no matter how small, or worthless you think you are.

intro explanation is wrong. multiple events are occuring inter-relatedly so if a dont do it others may fill the gap due to pursuit of equilibrium outcome of vast interactive variable. butterfly effect is over rated. the more complicated a system the equilibrium condition is more robust. a mis-flap of a butterfly wing will not result in absolute unpredictability : chaos

This is embarassing, there is something called a damping factor in nature, f(x)=e^(-x) , so no butterfly effect...sorry dreamers.

Nonsense, arrant nonsense. For any tiny little unusual or unexpected action or thing that might change the normal course of events, there are an infinite number of usual, logical and expected events oppossing or neutralizing the former.

If Einstein died before publishing his work then there would have been a delay by a few years for these theories to come out . Other physicists would have developed them . Just a delay by a few years .

You are explaining the wave theory. One man's wave couldn't able to complete with the total population waves in the world. Or the other people human brains not yet ready to know his new inventions. Or the nature is not ready to gift the humans with new inventions or time doesn't come or the earth still needs to get approval from the sun or want to go more rotations around the sun.

For the same reason astrology predictions are never accurate. It is near impossible to predict who will be present when the predicted event is supposed to happen and how that person's stars will affect the people nearby.

I am a fluid dynamics engineer, and the butterfly effect has never made sense to me. This is because our atmosphere is self-calming. Without constant energy input from the sun it would rapidly calm itself to complete stillness. I think everyone can grasp this by imagining a butterfly flying on the other side of the yard. The butterfly effect suggests that this should sometimes result in a puff of chaos reaching you that can blow your hair back. This never, ever happens. And the laws of fluid mechanics applied at the scale of your backyard prove that it never will happen. The eddies produced by those wings will rapidly dissipate. The same laws apply globally.
