I upgraded mine today to 2TB (WD SN740). I might've added too much storage to it, but oh well, the bigger the better! Highly appreciate the step-by-step guide. Thanks man. A quick note: In my case, after the reimaging process, I have to use the touchscreen to let the SteamOS update process complete first before buttons and touchpads work. I read from a reddit user's post: "If you swap SSD in newer decks, buttons won't work until you update SteamOS".

Well done sir, followed your directions and had no issues. A few pointers for non tech savy folks like myself who set out to do this swap: The case is NOT as easy to pry open as you think, I found that starting in line with the screws on the back was easier than the right bumper area which I saw most folks use. Also, the post install updates did take a really long time (like 30 minutes) but in the end all is good and this guide was great because Paul speaks clearly and at a normal pace which I haven't found to be the case with other guides.

Thank you. Just finished my upgrade a few minutes ago. This tutorial definitely was the best. The one thing I noticed when removing the battery cable the battery light would periodically light up. Overall, minus downloading steam OS to pc, process took me about 30 minutes.

omg you actually explain it, so many vids hva just power on and itll boot up, not push the left volume button and it takes mins to load was on the icon screen for so long i worried and rebooted it, thank you for showing it all the way

I've already swapped my SSD but still watched your video anyways. I did mine slightly differently as I'd been using my Deck for nearly 8 months before I mustered up the courage to do the swap so instead of reimaging I cloned the old 64 gig eMMC to the new SSD using an enclosure. One month later it still sorta blows my mind I was able to continue my old install so seamlessly like nothing ever happened!

Speed matters. I tried using a USB flash drive that was just laying around. I kept having minor issues, and it was taking forever. I decided to start over and use an USB-C flash drive. The reinstall was so much quicker with zero problems. I highly recommend paying attention to the speed of the drive you are using.

Thanks for the vid, that wait after choosing the steam image in boot manager took just under 90 seconds, and for me, i wasn't able to see my usb stick image in boot manager until i swapped my old sandisk 32gb usb stick to another usb port in my third party dock from AliEx. the reimage of the steam deck took about 5 minutes, and lastly, using rufus to write the steamos on the flash drive took like 40 minutes on my old sandisk 32gb usb, it was stuck on 94.2 and 100 for a long while, my usb stick is like close to 10 years, so i imagine anyone with a faster usb stick should be much faster than mine, just thought that might help someone. thanks!

Great guide, thank you! Just in case someone has the same issue I had. If the magnetic shield from the SSD doesn't fit the new SSD, you can gently peel it open and wrap it around the new one.

Unfortunately, Rufus gives me a "Write Error" every time I attempt to create the bootable USB device. (MS Defender was blocking a required file--selected 'allow' and image was created.)

I havent recieved my 64gb steam deck yet but I plan to order the SSD 2TB and a dock asap lol. I'll have my steam deck in a few days 😅. Hoping it'll all go super smooth while I follow this video [Edit] I went ahead and set up a recovery drive flash drive and already have a USB-A to USB-C adapter on hand so this will be 1 step you can knock out before even receiving your SteamDeck or SSD in the mail lol 😅

You'll have to reinstall all that unless you clone the original drive to the new drive before installing it.

Before swapping drives, do you have to do anything in particular to back up any game files? I believe all save files back up to the Steam cloud, so it shouldn't be an issue. I just wanted to double-check before opening up the deck.

If you want to be extra-careful, you can check your library to see when each game was last-synced.

It's also possible to disable cloud saves for individual games, and some older games don't support it.

Helppp used a USB 3.1 SanDisk 128gb tland stuck on black screen with sideways cursor after reflashing. Can confirm ssd installation worked cuz setup menu shows new storage. Help getting past this? I bought this flash drive a hr ago brand new. Definitely enough storage Definitely fast enough

So I just bought my ssd upgrade (215 gb, which is fine for me. As I disconnect the battery, is it normal for the small light at the top of the deck to flash? (I’m going to assuming it means that it’s dead?) My steam deck was at 7% before I started unscrewing everything.

Should be fine. Just make sure to press that power button a few times once the battery is disconnected and before unplugging the drive.

So, I'm in kind of a pickle... I swapped the 64gb ssd for a new 1tb one. All good so far. Got the recovery image in a thumb drive with RUFUS and started the steam deck on boot manager. Selected the USB drive and I see the steam deck logo for 5 minutes, then the sideways pointer for 10 minutes, then the screen remains black (it's ON)... I've waited for 20 minutes now and nothing. I'm using a USB hub to connect the thumbdrive and to keep the steam deck charging. Should I just keep waiting? I read somewhere that I could use an SD to install the steam os image on the new SSD Edit: I ended up just using the SD card I bought for the extra storage. The flashdrive died on me, with the SD card it completed the instalation in less than 10 minutes

Question: will you lose all your game data from every game you played from changing the SSD?

No. Most games have cloud sync for your save data, but you'll need to download them again. But do make sure they have synced to the cloud before you start.

Guys, please help me!!! I followed the procedures in this video. When it came time to put in my type C flash drive my heart sank when there was no power! When I plug the wall charger in it will boot up to the brown box with white letters: Default Boot Device Missing or Boot Failed....etc etc" The second I unplug the charger to attempt to put the type C memory stick in the power cuts off. I feel so helpless with this fucking thing. Any advice? I ordered a 3rd party Steam Deck dock on Amazon so maybe I can attempt to get this flashed using the dock somehow? No idea if that will work but I have ZERO ideas!

Hey man. Does your deck not start up at all unless it's plugged in, even after letting it charge for a while? Maybe your battery isn't connected properly. That could explain why it dies as soon as you unplug the charger. Check that you clicked the connector back in place properly, but remember to first drain the excess charge by pressing the power button a few times before tampering with the battery connector (the same way I explained in the video). Let me know how it goes.

Tbh, that part doesn't have to be done perfectly, so don't stress if you damage the sticker. Just try your best.

Maybe cut it and and then tape it back together again with a small piece of electrical tape? Not the most elegant solution, but I don't see it being a problem as long as you're willing to do it.

I used a 2tb nvme drive and I tugged at the seam a bit until it opened. I carefully wrapped it around my drive so it appeared to be in the exact orientation shown in the video and reinstalled it just fine.

@@paulperryvids I actually heard a guy using a slight bigger SSD and he just cut down a portion of the PCB what wasn't necessary to the functionality of the drive. I would still NOT recommend doing this, unless you really, really know what you are doing.

@kanewilson8624 I don't think so. If you're stuck at the cursor screen, that suggests a problem with the USB stick rather than the SSD. I'd try going back to 07:29 and carrying on from there. If that doesn't work, then try going back to 02:21

Do you have to unzip the file before you put it on the usb ? I’m also stuck at the black screen with the cursor I did not unzip the file before putting it on the usb and I was getting a “failed to start mount removable” “failed to start append steam is” etc and a few others

If you think this tutorial is easy, you're dead wrong. Do NOT do this by yourself unless you have professional tools, just DON'T. Mine came up with one stripped screw on one of the corners of the case. I had to change the SSD with the case still half intact. Otherwise, i'm stuck with 64GB steam deck and an unused $200 SSD. That was horrible. If you're buying your steam deck on a retailer and they offer you an upgrade, just take that before you regret everything and crying at 3 am.

@chandopro7125 it's not, but like i said you need to have the proper tools to anticipate faulty screws like mine. I think i broke the right trigger haptic in the process of opening the case by force. This was an edge case, it's better to spend a little more money than wasting $600, just in case.

I recently bought a used steam deck that someone upgraded to a 2 TB SSD. After shutting it off and turning it i get a boot screen. It does work once i click on it but is it supposed to bring up that boot screen each and every time i turn ot on after haveing it off for a bit or do i jave to do something so it can stop asking me to click on the boot up info?

I’m having this issue. Been on the steam logo with mouse cursor for about 30 minutes now. Did you get this issue solved? Should I power down and start over? Is Rufus supposed to say finished because mine just said 100% and no confirmation, so I closed it out. Maybe that’s my issue?
