That’s what I used to use. After I got tired of o-rings breaking over time, I switched to gear ties. You use the 4” ones and twist them around the rodand leave the end sticking up at the nub. Works great.
Great tip but I will add to it. If you leave the hook or fly on hook that at the top clip or where ever. Then you can 'double wrap' the line. Twice as fast and you don't have the fly dangling about. A velcro cord wrapper is a nice addition too.
Thank you for posting this! Just received a Tenkara rod for Christmas and it actually came with these little line keeper, but I had no idea how to use them. This video was very well done. Thanks for taking the time to post it.
GREAT IDEA !!!! Five Stars...That is a perfect example of just keeping your eyes open for solutions and multiple uses. You my friend are a Tinkerer! We look at how things are shaped and how they function, as well as how they can be modified and or applied to other things. many folks would look at that product and just pass it by because they don't need a hook tender. I can see a ton of uses for that little gizmo !!!
I have done a ton of spinner fishing, and always wanted to learn fly fishing but it always looked far too complicated. You are inspiring me to give it a shot.
Perfect! Thanks Jason for the tip - it was the last obstacle to getting the most out of my tenkara rod - I didn't have a good solution for the line when on the move. I picked up the EZ Keepers at Cabla's today and am looking forward to giving it a try!
This is brilliant! Cheap, lightweight! Also, I'm thrilled to find your site, I just recently decided I want to start fishing while backpacking, and have been scrounging around for links. I'm pretty sure I found the one stop shop haha. Keep up the great work Jason! Shake off the haters too ;) I love that you split between the two (backpacking / fishing). If they're not happy with the "lack" of backpacking, theres plenty of places they can go to get a focus on just that. We're here for both!
@NoGo90 Don't worry...tons of camping and backpacking videos coming. I will never run out. But, I am splitting my time between fishing and backpacking since those are my 2 passions in life.
you just made a bream buster....lol Im telling ya...down here in the south we have been using these for as long as I can remember...it may be a little longer when collapsed, but its the same thing.
Jason, I bought the Fuji EZ Keepers like you mentioned, but the O rings were too small --- seems like they were made for spinning rods or something. I went to McGuckins in Boulder to get O rings that were large enough, but they were a little too thick -- so the Keepers popped off easily. Where did you get your keepers (or O rings)?
I have an idea. I have these round things with a little handle and a spool that you can connect to the rod. They are called a fly reel and they hold the line like they were made for it. You can even take them off the rod and back on in seconds any time you want to.
