Ground Crew Chief takes you on a overhead tour of Sky Harbor Airport located in the Valley of the Sun - Phoenix, Arizona, and discussed the various jobs and responsibilities of a major airline ground crew.
Every time my wife and I travel to Phoenix (most recent trip was April 12-15) we like to go up South Mountain to watch the sunset. We always go early so we can watch the planes arriving and departing Sky Harbor. So much fun! Thx for the video.
Jessica, Crew Services, from her point of view, loves her job so much; as she said in one of the videos, she mentioned the job she loves, and it is so much fun, but it takes responsibility. She has the right attitude. It is amazing. She inspired me and others as well. I called her the best customer service and she got the right attitude.
Again your enthusiasm is contagious and makes me smile. It's always impressive to have a glance at the logistics at an Airport. For most people it looks chaotic but it seems every object has a specific location and function. Hugs from The Netherlands ;-)
1 runway (08/26) on the north side and 2 runways (07L 07R/ 25L 25R) on the south side of the airport. Another great video as you narrate the action happening below you!

I'd like to see a longer video of the whole process. Or maybe broken down from unload for one video to loading and preparing the plane for another video. Longer content is great sometimes. Always great videos!
Nice video Jessica! I have flown into PHX many times when I was married (my Ex was in the Airlines) and I got to know stand B25 very well. We always parked the British Airways 747-400 there ! 🙂 We had family in Gilbert where we visited. Used to vacation with the kids in Las Vegas (god mother there) and then drive down to Phoenix and stay in Gilbert then fly home to the UK from PHX on the 747 with BA. Great memories for me. Now I fly into PHX in Flight Simulator and still enjoy the memories. Thank you for the video. Oh wow! I love hearing that! We still bring in the wide bodies over at B25. Not 747’s anymore, but now the 777-200 and the 787-900. Such a small world! Gilbert is a great town :) I would love to hear your stories from Heathrow and Gatwick! Happy flying! 😁

I've been living in PHX since 2008 and I always feel bad for the ones working on the ramp in the Summer months here. It's always hotter at an airport then the local area. Thanks for all that you and your team do. I oddly enjoy watching the pushback videos.

Mesa is now contracted with another airline company in terminal 3. American is expanding into some larger regional planes to help with the customer service.
In 1980 I flew with the original ‘Frontier Airlines’ ..from Cola SC to Atlanta. The flight stopped in Wichita and continued to Denver. Even the ‘coach ‘ seats had plenty of room and the food going and returning was excellent. Breakfast had Omletts with all the usual sides. We flew back on Easter Sunday and had a steak for lunch.. I never forget good food and service . .. Have things changed or what…
I so want to live there- was in PHX last year- so hot the air I was breathign in was burning my throat..... get me that job in the Sky Harbour let's do this!!!!!

Thank you! The plane came in just a few minutes later. They call them “banks”. Flights come in banks. Or blocks of time. So after that, I bet several more started coming and leaving. But I had to go down and clock in :)
A unique perspective of your part of the airport layout, that you don’t normally get to see at ground level. Especially since drones are not only illegal but actually life threatening in your world. A question if I may, the window shades on all the aircraft were down to help with keeping the interiors tolerable, is that a standard operating procedure at your airport, or is it weather dependent?

When an American Airlines aircraft arrives into Sky Harbor from out-of-country, does it park in the International terminal for U.S. Customs, or does it park in its' regular AA terminal?
Just to ask you please, why does the marshaller take up his position deep on the centre line of the arrivals gate ,and then walk backwards to eventuality come off the centre line to take up a position to the left almost against the wall. Your push tug is taking up the position for the marshaller. I was trained to take my position and never move or walk backwards while marshalling incoming airplanes.
Very good observation! It is interesting how different companies have different procedures. At our station, we are told to greet the plane prior to the aircraft coming into the zipper line. Then as he advances, we walk backwards. Leading him in. We have to move to the left so we don’t hit the tug and so the pilot can see us. If we started all the way at the back, the pilot would not be able to see us. 😁
Thank you for subscribing!! It varies… here at PHX, we can be assigned to one gate for the day. Or we can move around to different gates on the same concourse. It depends on how our allocator assigns the flights. But everyday it varies.
I am not sure if there is a specific time frame. But at our station, you have to bid a wide body line. In other words, work on the wide body team. But there are not a lot of those lines, since PHX only does a couple of wide body flights a day.
Handy car park, you can have a look down at the ramp and get an idea of what is going on..... then decide whether to go home or stay and do your shift 🤔🤣🤦♂️ Already know your answer 🤣 When you turn up for your shift, do you already know where you be operating from, or is that decided when you clock in ?
Good question. After we clock in to start our shift, we sign in to our scanners. The dispatch or allocator then assigns us a “task” and it shows what Gate we need to go to. I’m e that task is finished, another assignment will pop up on the scanner and direct us to the same gate or another gate.
@ladyandtheramp Luck of the draw for you !! My full time job is a postie, so I have my own route and know roughly what I will be doing from week to week !! I do get curveballs thrown at me , probably because I have been there for 24 years 😬 And them my other job (well, paid hobby) I am a retained firefighter. Only two choices there for me, either driving or in the back for a start, then depending on what call we are going to dictates what we are doing, been doing this for 22 years, never a dull moment 😃
Both! At all of our gates…they are underground, and you can see the fuel cart just above it. But we also put all of our tugs and equipment out at the “fuel line” at night for the fuel rig to come fill them up! 😁
If I was seen to move, especially walking back, airside operations could write me up and suspend my airside pass. If the Marshaller trips moving backwards, the airplane is still moving, that means the crew chief is down.
Mostly the heavy twins from Airbus. Started out with marshaling G. A. Types eg King Air's Be 1900's light biz jets, and then Global Express and G5 G6 etc. Then the airlines B738 and A320/321 types A332 A333 and B772 and some military types.
I have occasionally. My shifts are all AM’s so I would have to pick them up specifically. But you are correct, the conditions change. Glare, low visibility, etc… I will have to pick up a night shift and film some stuff! Good idea! 😁
At our station, we start out at part time with only $17/hr. But we have great benefits! Full medical and dental health insurance. 401k. Andy immediate family flys free.

Isn't the "chock thrower" within the danger zone of getting sucked into the engine if it hasn't spooled down (all the way) yet? I'm asking for me because I know as sure as I know myself that I would pick the wrong day to daydream about life and suddenly become engine food.
You are correct….you do not want to be near those engines before spooling down. There is a beacon light underneath the aircraft that flashes…but once it is turned off, you are allowed to approach the aircraft.
