A Soldier's Story is a 1984 drama film directed by Norman Jewison. It is a story about racism and segregation in a black army regiment with white officers deep in the Jim Crow South. A black officer investigates a murder of a black non-commissioned officer on an army base in Louisiana near the end of World War II, a time and place where no one had ever seen a black officer. Starting with a tiny but pithy clue of the sergeant's last moments and last words, the movie is a powerful thriller and historical drama.

The funny thing about CJ is he may have been just a lowly country bump to some folks be he was actually pretty smart in his own way. If you saw the whole movie and payed attention he was the ONLY character who properly identified what was wrong with Sgt. Waters..."any man ain't sure where belong, gotta be in a whole lotta pain."

I wish that I could up-vote your comment ten times. You hit the nail on the head about CJ's insight into Sgt. Waters.

Sgt. Waters was a deeply conflicted character. He used simpleton CJ to make himself feel superior because in his own heart he felt inferior to not only whites, but the the physical prowess CJ displayed. Sgt. Waters' had no pride in his heritage and a low sense of self worth. Later in tge film we find out why.

Sergeant Waters was no better than C.J. He was a "yah suh, boss" himself. However, Sarge hated C.J because he was C.J was a mere image of himself. I understand somewhat what Sarge was saying, You don't have to figh so hard to be liked. He just went about it the wrong way. He really crosses the line and it drove C.J to suicide.

Sgt Waters didn’t hate black people. The fact that you thin that shows you’re apart of the problem.

@askido351 your right sgt waters way of doing thing was not right to,so what would u have done with c.j. memphis?
@kglove01
@kglove01 13 лет назад
@askido351 Its both. regardless of how sarge did it, he did have one valid point and that was we as a people have to raise our self respect and it was hard / still is hard to do to demand our dignity, when too many of us refuse to act with any. but in CJ's defense, you can't blame a crippled man for not being able to walk. He didn't know any better and instead of educating him, sarge killed him. fast forwar to today, we still struggle with that with our so called entertainer's and rap artisit.

I watch this and think of every southern rapper on the video and radio screen today. I think of Flavor Flav's reality show, I think of every black athelete that the Status quo media parades in front of the television cameras as examples of what it is to be black in America. But all you have to do is flip thru the pages of Black enterprise magazine and you see the pages abound with Black Ceo's of Fortune 100 companies black scientists and intellectuals. The day of the Geechie been gone

Thats true. In fact the lst acting job he did, was on "Knots Landing". He was in this scene with Joan Van Ark and it was obvious he lost a lot of weight. It was a shame. He was a great actor.

@fatdaddyb28 I've never known geechie to be used in a non-offensive term... now... the Angola derivative thing, I've never heard. that's interesting... the one thing I'd ask you is how, then did they come to the NC/SC/ GA area, when angola was run by the Portuguese and the vast majority of angolan slaves ended up in Brazil...

you're right but Memphis wasn't like any of the people you just described he was himself he wasn't posing or pretending to be something he isn't like they try to do in order to make money. If anything waters is alot more like the people your speaking about than Memphis is.
