WWI-style rotarty motors are unique and I tried to replicate this spinning effect. It's amazing that it works so well so follow along and dive in while I show you all about how it works and how it's constructed.

Very nice Joshua, on my electric DH2 WW1 pusher I fitted an extended prop shaft which runs through a brass tube which the free-spinning engine is attached to, as the motor turns the dummy engine spins but only at a low rpm's as the brass tube isn't connected to the motor, a very pleasing effect, cheers 👍

It's gonna torque roll like a real WW1 plane.

Oh, this is super clever. Whoever wins the glow version is going to be jealous. You know, XOAR makes three types of WWI style propellors, starting at the 10-6 size. I use one for display on my BUSA EIII.

Joshua, You will have to check out the full scale Fokker D 8 at Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome…it actually is powered by a rotary engine…very loud and messy…and very cool!

Interesting workaround. But also an Overly Complex Rube Goldberg solution. IMO. Simply print the Gnome with a front engine case.. so the motor shaft passes thru it. except it's fitted with a ball bearing... so that the Rotary is rotated purely by the friction of that ball bearing spinning on the Motor shaft.

I see what your on about and I like it! I do have concern about wear of the bearing over time as the bearing would need to support loads from all directions, not just an axial load. In addition, I'd be concerned about cooling for the electric motor. You do need air flow to cool the motor windings and to be fair, that is something I did not mention in my video. Appreciate the thought and certainly give it a shot!

Very cool! Fan of Swedish aircraft? I spot an Ö1 Tummelisa and a FVVS J22 in your shop. Maybe you’ve heard of MJD dot S E? (YT doesn’t like links) He made a Thulin A (Bleriot XI) with a rotating dummy engine.

Uh, YEAH! I'm HUGELY a fan of the Swedes and their cleverness in the aviation industry. Check out my Saab B.17 build that I just recently completed. MJD looks like Marcus' work to my eye. I followed his builds on RCG years and years ago and purchased the J-22 plans from him. Had I built it right, I'm sure the model would have flown very very well. I'll re-visit it another time.
