Some people still start engines that way. For instance, you might do that on a Piper Cub or Taylorcraft that didn't have an electrical system offer after. Or for a homebuilt using a VW engine.

I'm impressed with what you achieved, it's harder than it looks! I had an air pressure toy plane as a kid and I recognize the very same problem here: air leaks. As soon as you unplug the pump you can clearly hear a leak. I believe this an inevitable problem because even when you seal it perfectly, after a couple runs and impacts on the ground it will start leaking again.

Hey Tom! Could you try putting something like Liquid nitrogen or Dry Ice+Hot water into the fuel tank? It could provide a continuous supply of pressurized gas as it evaporates, vastly increasing the volume of fuel and looking badass at the same time.

With a strong enough container you could chuck in some dry ice, seal it and let it come to room temperature, which if cody's lab is anything to go by can generate ~1500 psi (if memory seves correctly). The question then is letting the pressure out slowly enough to not break apart the engine.

That should be manageable with a pressure reducer. The more urgent question here is: Where to get a very light bottle and light equipment (suitable to be carried by an aircraft) that can hold 1500 psi.

I think you can get carbon fiber canisters designed for paintball and stuff. Anyway (technically) he could just scale the size of the aircraft to make the weight manageable (but I understand that might not be feasible). A more practical idea would be to fit a simple pressure release valve like you'd have in a heating boiler.

This takes me back to my first AirHogs plane, you would pump it up and start the prop and throw it, and it would fly in big circles overhead. I loved it as a kid. What kind of results do you think you would get if you tried to run a plane off a disposable CO2 cartridge? The kind that goes in BB guns. (I'm guessing there's not enough gas in there but what do I know.)

A company called Gasparin makes little CO2 engines, much smaller and lighter than this one. Generally, CO2 is likely to have much more pressure.

I absolutely fell in love with your channel. I used to build planes like that long time ago and left that hobby 20 years in the past. Now that I see it, I've really missed this stuff. If the engine can take higher PSI it would be interesting to use a carbon fiber reinforced air tank that could take several hundred PSI....and perhaps a regulating valve could be placed between the tank and the engine. That might give a more reasonable flight time.

That's what I was thinking, a few thousand PSI and a servo-controlled throttle valve is a much better idea to me. It might be possible to produce (or buy) a small air tank good for very high pressures.

Way too heavy... It'd weigh more than the entire plane. A threaded C02 catridge might be a better idea, if you can make a light enough regulator.

CO2 cartridges are expensive, compressed air is cheap :) BTW it doesn't matter if the air tank weighs more than the plane. It's typical in electric RC flying for a battery pack to weigh more than the plane, so it's fine. A very high pressure system requires an appropriate compressor, though, and a suitable regulator--ideally with throttle valve. That way, you just take off from the ground, and have a normal throttle on your radio.

@@InfamousAMH actually depending on witch valve/turbine system he is using is dependent on what type of spring he needs and he has a shitty 1 way ball valve witch it dose not let much air past quickly like a butterfly so it can need a stiffened spring for high pressure (for a butterfly)yes in most cases but could work just as well on a low intensity spring dew to his method on how his turbine is designed in witch is a crank with a simple piston and the air pressure pumps it round but not to 100% completion when downside so the spring dose what gravity would do so he dose not need a strong spring... and dont call hi there a idiot

A long fuselage, entirely of bottle sections,would have a larger energy to weight ratio, be very rigid in bending when pressurised and eliminate the existing thin fuselage

Fill the plane from a 1lb propane camp stove bottle. On a cool day pressure will be just about right and no hand pumping required.

I personally hate transmitter straps when using hand launched planes. I threw one of my wings once and while my hand was coming into grab the transmitter, I pulled the strap and it caught on the throttle. Straight to the ground, full throttle, big mess.

reminds me of a turbo prop. instead of using the jet engine to directly push the plane forward it drives a propeller doing most of the work. Maybe a design with a turbine would work better than a piston solution

Turbines need to be north of about 150 horsepower before they become more efficient than a piston engine. The physics doesn't scale 100%, you can't build up the correct pressure differences without an astronomical rpm compared to a large turbine so they never end up efficient no matter how well you make it.

I was thinking about the same thing. Use larger bottles for the Fuse, and smaller wing tanks, like a U2.

I’d love to see a seaplane where the fuselage and pontoons are the bottles connected with some plastic tubing, or a larger plane with extra bottles suspended under the wings!

Hi Tom, always a pleasure to see your videos. It look the engine is lack of power compared to this huge propeller. This is a problem I often encountered when building Free-Flight planes, a smaller propeller or a different pitch can do a big difference. Thanks for sharing !!

Servos on the tail ARE NOT a good idea for many reasons. Weight and balance, pitch/yaw inertia, etc. Interesting project. A transmitter strap would be a useful addition, too. Never thought of RC as aerobic, but you've proved me wrong. ;-)

Joni. I used to fly HLG all the time. I sometimes even HLG'd my SD-100 sailplane, a 100"'er, even got a small thermal on one hand launch, but only about a 5 minute flight on that one. I was really hoping to get up a ways into a 2 hour type flight, but alas... I would like to try some discuss launchers, but unfortunately my arm is not what it used to be after a MAJOR break with a long recovery.

Pretty impressive results, the sound really sells it! I'm trying to wrap my head around the efficiency of the motor. Can it actually outperform using the air pressure in the bottle as a simple jet of air? My only guess would be more turbulences around the jet than with a propeller. That would still be kinetic energy as an undirectional chaotic kind of waste.

The problem with a jet would be that it would have to be very small so as not to drain the tank in a couple of seconds. That would mean you have a small very high velocity jet which wouldn't gain much traction and would be ineffecient in a much lower airspeed craft. It would be similar to putting a tiny high ptich propeller on which wouldn't work.

Love what your trying to do, as u know concistenly equal pressur is ideal for compressed air engine consider a regulator or s double tank go make this fly. A regulation valve is most essential for consistency in this type engine

Might want to lubricate the cylinder. Pam cooking spray works well,( don't eat that stuff though). 70lb pressure. Awesome job! Thanks for the video.

I think you should try dry ice instead of compressed air. It may protect the piston from ceasing and keep it cool. May also produce long run time

Maybe some auxiliary tanks would give it a good flight. Maybe a long, slim tank down the back or a tank inside the wings would give it enough juice for a 100m flight? The odd 50m you got already is pretty impressive. Also a big fan of your ebike series.

Great work. I bought an airhog for my kids way back around 2002. It may be worthwhile mentioning that we still do not fully understand how an airfoil-shaped wing really works.

You and I don't, but I think people who make aerodynamics their life's work have a pretty good handle on it. The inability to describe a physical phenomenon and the associated set of equations in a few clear words, without resorting to math, does not imply a lack of understanding. Lots of times, explanations I hear that people claim are incompatible are like the 6 blind men and the elephant. (Apologies to actual blind people, who are likely smarter than the guys in the story.)

How about trying to start the engine by throwing it? You are losing a huge amount of power holding it and idling before tossing it. If that doesn't work, perhaps go back to the drawing board and devise a remote starter. That would be awesome in its own right not to mention very useful.

I don't really think that would be efficient enough to justify it's size, single cylinder is probably the best way to go if he wants the thing to perform. I bet it would sound cool though.

My setup uses a 180 degree twin.. 550psi at 1.8 liters, regulated down to 105psi at take off then restricted to 55 to 60psi of line pressure after I gain a little alt.. at 55psi I get 3 minutes of powered flight however the CC of his single cyl engine is prolly 10 to 15% more then my twin. I went With a 180 degree twin due to reasons to long to type but moreless I could get a little more torque from the twin vs a single with a smaller total compression area. This system has very interesting properties that I fully plan to dig in to more. My setup (be it a LOT more complex then his proof of concept) provides powered flight for a length of time that is surprising to many. We could get much more flight time if we build A motor large enough to spin a much larger prop and a wing area large enough to provide enough low speed lift to carry a 13 to 20ci 4500psi bottle with a engine running at something like 80ish psi and consuming 300 to 400psi a minute from the bottle.. a few prototypes and I do believe that a plane with decent preformance and power would be able to be made and it wouldn't just be enough power to keep it in the air to find a thermal.

MaxTheKanuck a two cylinder motor would be more effective because the other cylinder would assist the other arranged on a drive shaft would create plenty of power.

I'm going to try to build a multi cylinder version, the hardest part to figure out is the crankshaft. I may have an idea though. The rest is just finding an o ring the right size and getting the dimensions of it to build the engine around.

I had one of those old purple AirHogs planes. First flight it went in a tree, the second it nail a pole and ripped off a wing. No idea what I did with the body but I remember when the motor ran it really ran fast. Hurt the finger quite a bit when it hit one. The air tank was very solid when fully pressurized.

I did a week of flying a yak 52 which has a pneumatic starter. Mags on, press the start button and instead of a starter motor it was just a pause and then all the cylinders roared into life. Quite disconcerting, but massive fun.
