Burials today happen a week or two or even months after death. By the time of the funeral, there’s often been at least some time. But not here. This was a young man. Perhaps there was sickness involved, but it very well could have been an accident of some kind. A sudden death. And burial happened usually on the day of death. There was no refrigeration back then. This was a sudden grief. And this was the only son of his mother, whose husband was also dead already. This isn’t some little hurt. This was real grief. We’re going to see Jesus approach and bring real joy in the midst of real grief. See, he knew how hard death was. God had been mourning since the dawn of time. But God had also come with a solution to death. He’d conquer death by dying himself.
