Allulose as a sugar is getting a lot of well deserved attention. We are seeing some pretty remarkable science with respect to allulose as it relates to metabolic health and specifically, weight loss. I felt, as such, that it would be a good idea to interview Dr. Benjamin Bikman on the Empowering Neurologist program today. Let me tell you more about Dr. Bikman.
Benjamin Bikman earned his Ph.D. in Bioenergetics and was a postdoctoral fellow with the Duke-National University of Singapore in metabolic disorders. Currently, his professional focus as a scientist and professor (Brigham Young University) is to better understand the role of elevated insulin and nutrient metabolism in regulating obesity, diabetes, and dementia.
In our time together, we discuss the important science of allulose as it relates to fat distribution in the body, insulin resistance, heart disease, fatty liver disease, cognitive decline, and even how allulose is able to lower uric acid, an area that I'm certainly interested in.
I hope you enjoy this fascinating interview with Dr. Benjamin Bikman.

I don’t have a continuous glucose monitor, but I do the standard finger prick two hours after I have a meal and this is how I keep track of it and see what happens. You can’t measure it too soon after you eat- you’ve got to give the glucose time to get into the blood. Typically your blood sugar peaks about an hour and a half to two hours after you begin eating. It’s not just what you eat. It’s the way you eat. I have found that if I have eggs and bacon some avocado, in the morning with one or two Wassa crisp breads with butter, (these were recommended by Dr. Atkins years ago as a replacement for bread)-And then I will have one or two small homemade cranberry muffins with cream cheese -no naked carbs here. This keeps my blood sugar within a good range -I try to keep it between 70 and 130. Usually it’s less than 120 whenever I eat. Erythritol destroys my gut. I’ve purchased some monk fruit with Allulose. (Lakanto brand). I’m going to try it but only in moderation. I may try a half a teaspoon or so in my coffee although I do like black coffee -that’s not a problem for me. I may try it in some baked goods just to reduce the amount of standard table sugar, and reduce the carbohydrate content. I’ll have to see how that works. I also try to reduce the carb count by reducing the amount of flour and substituting with a quantity of almond flour. Godspeed to all of you out there who are trying to figure out what works best for you. Just one other thing --the comment about some doctors not wanting people to have continuous glucose monitors because then people will just worry too much. This is what’s been happening in the medical establishment. Medical knowledge is no longer the monopoly of doctors and nurses, and a lot of them don’t like that. But what they should realize is that they have contributed to this. They are gradually going to put themselves out of a job because they stopped being independent critical thinkers doing what’s best for every individual patient and started practicing algorithmic medicine. And this is because in the 1980s, the pharmaceutical industry began taking over medical education. This is not just for people. This has been happening in veterinary colleges too. While there are exceptions, most doctors have become nothing more than drug reps for the pharmaceutical companies. -they have become nothing more than prescribers. The doctor is not supposed to dictate treatment. Their job is to educate you, present the options and you decide what treatment if any you will adopt. So the responsibility now is on everybody’s shoulders to inform yourselves and go to your doctor armed with information and questions. Don’t go there like a submissive child, -don’t be afraid to respectfully challenge them and hopefully you can encourage them to have a one on one adult discussion with you instead of treating you like a child who should just obey.

Wrong. With the finger prick 2 hours after you eat, you miss the spike! My diabetes kept getting worse, the dr. Just kept increasing meds. I switched Drs and bought CGM because my insurance wont pay for it. Finally, reducing carbs, BG numbers going down as well as weight. Finally!
@livialaurenzano4081
@livialaurenzano4081 6 месяцев назад
@@kelliez9991 So happy for you that you switched doctors. This is exactly what I was talking about -the doctors who just want to prescribe. Fortunately, I am not diabetic. I have found that for me if I take it an hour to two hours after I begin eating, I catch the highest level that’s what I’m looking for and then it starts going down after that. Godspeed.
@livialaurenzano4081
@livialaurenzano4081 6 месяцев назад
@@kelliez9991 I am sure you know that with the continuous glucose monitor there is a delay because it doesn’t measure the blood directly but the interstitial fluid so one still has to do a finger prick periodically to check the accuracy of the monitor. That’s the other reason why I decided not to use one. But I am so glad that you finally decided to reduce your carbohydrate intake. When you were with your first doctor, did he tell you that or was he just wanting to use meds?

Where I've found allulose useful is in BBQ rubs. In standard rubs they use sugar to help the bark formation because it caramelizes. Allulose caramelizes like regular sugar so it works great as a substitute. Even though the amount of sugar you would get from your meat's dry rub is probably incidental I still prefer to keep my sugar intake minimal.

You mention the inflammation in the body. I accidentally came across a video where Clint Ober was interviewed. He is the one who brought grounding into the forefront. He and others have done scientific studies of the effect of grounding on chronic inflammation in the body. He developed grounding mats that could be used by people that can't get outside to ground with the earth. I bought one on Amazon because I had several things in my body that I could not get my regular doctors to help me with. I had swelling of my ankles and feet on and off for several years. I was told by a cardiologist just to wear compression stockings. I wasn't satisfied with that bandaid. Also since July of this year, I was having pain in my soft tissues from the waist down. It hurt anywear to touch my lower body. I wondered if I had fibromyalgia. So after using the grounding mat consistently for a week, all the swelling in my ankles and feet went away. The pain that I was feeling from the waist down totally disappeared. Plus my hemorrhoids have shrunk down dramatically. Grounding works for many disease and degenerative diseases. Check it out!!

Because of being able to wear a CGM, I was able to see the wall before crashing into it and becoming diabetic and I was able to bring my blood sugar way down and drastically improve my health. When I started on Allulose, I really embraced it, thinking how good it was for me. Eating 40 and sometimes up to 75 grams in Keto desserts. I was wondering which ingredient was causing stomach pain, I finally narrowed it down when I read the following from a study: "In conclusion, a major aim of our study was to compare the digestive tolerance associated with D-allulose consumption throughout the day, in the aforementioned two manners. We identified the maximum single dose of D-allulose to be 0.4 g allulose/kg·BW for occasional ingestion and the maximum total daily intake for this sugar substitute to be 0.9 g allulose/kg·BW for regular ingestion. In other words, the maximum single dose of D-allulose for adults with a mean body weight of 60 kg was 24 g, and up to 54 g can be consumed daily without any side effects." You can read it yourself, just google all or part of the quoted text. I think I can use Allulose in combo with other sweeteners as long as I stay within the guidelines, I at 80kg won't go over 30 grams/day.
@Darklion39
@Darklion39 Месяц назад
You shouldn't be embracing it, it should be a supplement to a minor cheat meal, such as in coffee or one keto cinnamon roll or something. You should be worried about habitually abusing an experimental hormone modulator, despite these very early clinical claims that it is completely safe, and we all know how those go 10 years down the line.

I will definitely be switching over to using more allulose in my coffee and other sweets. I am also thrilled that you covered so much on insulin resistance. Which is a subject most of my healthcare team looks at me like a lunatic for insisting that too much insulin is the root of my problems, and adding more is NOT going to cure anything! And thanks to you gentlemen, I know adding allulose to my coffee should help me restore my insulin sensitivity. I will be sharing this, to help educate my doctors. Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU! If you've never tried keto, but are open to the idea, may I recommend a 4-week stint. When I did that, I lost twenty actual pounds, saw food cravings vanish, and my sweetness receptors found processed foods overly sweet. This made it easy to transition to low-carb & intermittent fasting, helping me lose another twenty pounds over the following six months. To be clear, weight loss was not my goal, but a welcome side effect. Dietary changes improved my health considerably, improving or "curing" numerous chronic ailments. My feeling is thar we are overly and unduly accustomed to sweetness, and crutches like allulose are not helping. After recalibrating my taste buds, and sweet treats are no longer a daily thing, I find that I appreciate them much more.

Im not trying to be rightious . I just miss those i love and have seen so much diabetes in people and animals too. I have noticed resentments for success and not eating junk when offered. Would one offer alcohol to a child or heroine to an addict ,I believe sugar is a main reason so many people get sick and inherit diamentias. Sadly both my parents had diamentias and passed away from complications there of. A very long goodbye ,I just see it ( diamentias) as a 3rd kind of diabetes. I have experienced much judgement and snarcastic remarks about not eating sugar anymore. Ironically i have been many sizes and shapes and get it that anyone gets to choose how they eat. But seriuosly i used to be a baker and wedding cake maker and i love to cook .There is a whole food world out there with low carb and ketogenic foods and replacements and wonderful recipes. I don`t understand the resentments about learning food replacements and newways of eating.just take for instance Wieght Watchers , it`s a different way of eating and learning curve ! I hope with information like this we can as humans be OPEN to awareness of what we are experiencing and we can own our part in our health ,even healthy fats and different sugar replacements for better health . My health is important to me and my money and time and self care is too. I don`t want our kids and grandkids to watch us fade away from diamentias if we can help that. They all were sugar addicts, obese, had horrible diets. I’m in my 60s and see my weight going up and have cravings for carbs that I never used to have, red flag, I know. Don’t worry over other people’s reactions to your success, that’s their problem, not yours. I would just avoid the food pushers as much as possible.

THIS SCRIPTURE Sounds like a vac’s to me! ..... “And the first went and poured out his bowl upon the earth, and an evil and wicked sore came upon the men, those having the mark of the beast and those worshipping his image.” ‭‭Ḥazon (Revelation)‬ ‭ He killed Asa for going to a doctor. “And in the thirty-ninth year of his reign, Asa became diseased in his feet, and his disease was severe. Yet even in his disease he did not seek יהוה, but the physicians. So Asa slept with his fathers, and died in the forty-first year of his reign.” ‭‭Diḇre haYamim Bĕt (2 Chronicles)‬ ‭16:12-13‬ ‭TS2009‬‬ He says He is our Rapha EL! And the disciple Luke never gave out chemical pharmaceuticals or shots which is sin. Without taking the mark of the beast……We wont be able to buy sell or trade without having it....or have a job or go shopping...n etc... The vac’s is definitely doing this and even the masks, which compromise our health, did this. Exodus 7:11 alludes to the mask and the hidden agendas and hidden people behind the agendas. Secret hiding. Lahat is enchantment and it means to veil or mask it, covering that hides what is behind it. Similar to a lizard with camouflaged capabilities. Hasatan is twisting around and seducing with materialism, money, food, drugs, sex, whatever way he can to get people to stay away from the covenant or to break covenant. He always has. It’s not something new like we think. Some just are like Amalek and won’t repent, also like Pharaoh. And also the others who are the “giant” leaders or kings like Solomon that allowed his head to be turned away, by the daughters of these pharaohs ( adams/men), and he never repented. And Solomon overtaxed and sacrificed his children to molech. They also did in like manner with their enchantments - The word להתים lahatim, comes from להט mor lahat, to burn, to set on fire; and probably signifies such incantations as required lustral fires, sacrifices, fumigations, burning of incense, aromatic and odoriferous DRUGS, etc., …as the means of evoking departed spirits or assistant demons, by whose ministry, it is probable, the magicians in question wrought some of their deceptive miracles: for as the term miracle signifies properly something which exceeds the powers of nature or art to produce (see also Exo 7:9). Deuteronomy 32:31-33 n 42 Gall is Roshe, which is opium n was cultivated by Sodom n Gomorrah. Which was likely the drug capital of the world....Seducing and raping. Gal (which Is the short of Galgotha, which is dancing on the head Messiah and all His believing people to destroy Him which they try but they ultimately can’t) So it’s one of the venoms n sin n evil spirit that strikes the heal but HaMashiach will stomp its head! They were likely enticed by more than sex in Numbers Chapter 25, drugs were surely involved. Even so it’s all sin that destroys. Also Gall is what they gave HaMashiach when He was cursed on the Tree for us and He rejected the drug! He is the wave offering and He conquered sin and paid our citations for disobeying the law, and throws it as far as the east to the west, that is…IF we repent and love His covenant with a circumcised heart. Obey Torah/TaNaK) (which is the SCRIPTURE Messiah said they were erring in) and desire to be His unblemished bride, Hebrew(crossed over)YsraEl! Set Apart! satan reminded HaMashiach with revenge at His suffering to His death, with the Gall of Sodom and Gomorrah and how many were destroyed by the drugs but HaMashiach will have the final victory! And even if it were just vinegar like some say, Messiah was taking a Nazarite Vow and would not drink it anyways because of His vow not being ended yet. He is High Priest and will do a sacrifice ending His Numbers 6 Nazarite Vow and come with blood already on His vesture of the sacrifice to end His Vow. He is not drinking of the grape, He is not touching the dead yet and He is not cutting His hair after His hair was taken out. We will also do sacrifice n the Holy Days in the 1000 year reign. Read Zechariah 16-21 Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food! Amen! Every herb is highly medicinal seed bearing straight from YaH! And stop eating off satans table. Obey the Scriptures. We must Obey YaH and His Holy Word! We must not be lukewarm and lawless or we will be spewed from His mouth!

@@Kathleen, yes, homemade ice cream is wonderful!! I typically eat it every day. 😊 🍨 Carnivore Ice Cream * 1 quart heavy cream * 4 egg yolks * 1 cup allulose (optional, but it keeps it scoopable in the freezer and sweetens it) * 1 TBS vanilla (optional) * 4-6 TBS cocoa powder, carob powder, etc. (optional). Blend, then let spin for 25 minutes in an ice cream maker until it’s a soft serve consistency, then freeze. If you don’t have an ice cream maker, blend this until it thickens, and then freeze it. It will be icy instead of a creamy texture, but it will still taste good. I definitely prefer the creaminess though of putting it in an ice cream maker!

I recently was diagnosed with severe high insulin resistance. I am a very small built gal and after a stroke I had started gaining large amounts of weight. My eating had stayed the same which was basically Keto. I have a lifelong eating preference of carbs. It has been easier to digest food with my IBS issues. Once I had the stroke my body gained 50 pounds in record breaking time (for me at least). That was 2018 and since then I tried to get help from my GP but they just tried different diets which failed. Fast forward to this last week I was sent to an Endocrinologist which saved my life. We thought maybe I had Cushings, but it turned out to be severe high insulin resistance. My dad was type 2 my brother at the age of 50 turned type 1. Tonight, I watched RU-vid videos my Endocrinologist told me to watch about the resistance from Ben Bikman. Dr. Bikman answered 4 main questions I was struggling with. You both brought up a new sweetener I had not heard of Allulose. I am interested in learning more in regard to losing weight and also keeping my appetite down as well as my insulin levels. I was brought up on the pink packet being my dad was type 2. I still use it today along with drinking diet MT. Dew. I don't have the food associated to my soda so I remember Dr. Bikman saying that it would be passable due to no food intake triggered. Dr. Bikman, will you explain what positive things I would receive by using Allulose? And if you could use nonscientific language, I would appreciate it, as I am no longer able to understand much of the descriptions or use of the words. Do you have a favorite BRAND? I thank you very much ahead of time for any attention you give my inquiry. Renee Lund

I refused to take Metformin for my Type 2 diabetes. Instead, I slapped on a continuous blood glucose monitor, started a Keto diet and also intermittent fasting for 16 hours a day. Sometimes I do one meal a day, sometimes two. I use small amounts of Erythritol in tea a couple of times a week. I’ve reversed my diabetes, my insulin sensitivity is improving and I know what spikes it and a few hacks ie; eating a salad first if I’m having carbs, exercise like walking after eating and apple cider vinegar. One thought for promoting CGM for more people is to treat it even like a game. Have people competing to get the 'high score' or lowest area under the glucose curve for the day and see how the entire population all the sudden becomes super healthy while having fun doing it. Managing metabolism could easily be achieved just by gamifying glucose monitoring.

Americans take a lot for granted. I'm in the uk and my mother is now type 2 diabetic , my brother has been type 1 diabetic for nearly 20 years and my grandfather was too. When I spoke to my doctor before covid i asked shouldn't i test my blood for this? His response was that we don't bother doing that anymore. You assume the whole world has their fasting blood sugar tested 'once a year'. In the UK we don't have to pay directly for our healthcare, but we still pay for it. However, we don't have a system where we can present ourselves and ask for what we believe we should have to manage our health. It works like this: 'I'm ill can I see a doctor?' no, tell us what is wrong with you and then if we need to see you then you can come in. It's better that nothing.

Thank you Sir for interviewing one of my favorite Research Doctors! Mr Bikman is a name that crosses my lips at least once a week. I brag about him all the time. I was bragging about him before I knew him by name because his RESEARCH is so applicable. Even my physicians from a decade ago would get flustered when I would quote recent studies and data and wanted to apply it to my health when they would become stumped. I can tell you first hand, a LOT of doctors do NOT like their patients being informed. I once said autophagy to a doctor and she stormed out of the room and wrote nasty things in my records about starvation and fad dieting, I was only mentioning intermittent and short fasts. She dismissed it as dangerous trends and I quoted it was a study from a famous medical teaching hospital and she got hot under the collar. There is an ego fear in them that they may not know "everything". I don't need my doctor to "know everthing" but I expect them to listen and learn. I had one doctor who was always impressed that she didn't have to baby talk to me about my own issues because I know the terminology and that reduced confusion when planning medicines or treatments because she know I was not going to make a mistake and I knew she was listening because we used the same lingo. Anyway, I appreciate the talk you had with Bikman and the science that is know about this sweetener. I honestly have move into using it more mostly because of it's benefits with cooking and the lack of the 'cooling' effect, But knowing there are other benefits is the "icing" on the cake ( I dont even like icing!) I'm wondering why you haven't cut everything sweet tasting out of your diet. Is it just because you think of it as a treat and can't let go?

The only issue with allulose is that there isn't much of it naturally occurring. So if we eat a lot of it, that might be an issue. A teaspoon in the coffee might be fine, a cake with 2 cups of it every day may not be.

Maybe eat only a small piece of cake at once that contains around 1 tsp of sweetener/sugar.. and have no sugar in coffee. Problem solved😁

Only tiny amounts occur naturally in figs, etc. But the allulose you can buy is not made from figs, it's usually fermented from corn or rice. It's easy to obtain. But it is not as sweet as sugar, and if you're trying to replace sugar in a recipe, you have to use about one-third more allulose than sugar. I find it works well for some things, not as well for others, and best when you add a tiny amount of another sugar, such as coconut sugar, date sugar, honey, or some other sweetener. I don't use "sugar substitutes" (stevia, monk fruit, erythritol, etc.) because I find they all have a bad taste. Then again, it's very good to learn to eat things that are really good while not being very sweet. I no longer sweeten things that I was taught to sweeten. Coffee is deliciously bitter, Greek yogurt is deliciously sour, etc.

I normally avoid sugar but if I want a mug of cocoa for example I sweeten it with glycine. I might try allulose instead but not sure if it’s healthier than a teaspoon of glycine?

Allulose would be pretty expensive to use as a baking substitute for sugar. 1 cup of sugar = 1 1/3 cup Allulose and that would cost around $15.00 USD.

And therein is the rub. Becomes just too expensive, so people go back to other non-sugar sweeteners.

I don't view the expense as a downside. Sweetened treats long ago became far, far too commonplace and taken for granted. I'd be lucky as a kid to have had a single soda in a week, now people they deserve one per hour. Let the expense deter you from frivolous consumption.

A very interesting discussion. I just met with a Bariatric physician and have started my keto journey. I met with the dietician and asked about allulose as a sugar substitute. She said she did not know of allulose and suggested mung fruit. I will have to suggest this episode to the dietician and physician. They suggested that maybe my well controlled juvenile onset tonic clonic epilepsy could be controlled by keto. Eww..I would rather stay on meds, having seizures is not fun. Thank you for this informative discussion.

I have found that Allulose is not as sweet as sugar. It is too expensive to use enough to make my coffee tolerable. I use it with monk fruit. The truth I have found is that I need to make a greater effort to wing myself from craving the sweetness. Not what I want to do but what I need to do! It’s hard but I hope I can eventually stop the madness in the way I go!🥲

Most commercially available allulose is synthetically made from corn.Feb 10, 2021 You can find allulose for sale online and in some retail stores. Because it occurs naturally in very small amounts, the allulose you find packaged for sale isn’t its natural form. It has been created artificially by food, what food... You tell me now.

I’d be curious where it’s manufactured too. Remember, there was a big push for xylitol, and then looking deeper it seemed like the studies promoting it came out of China, and most xylitol was also manufactured in China , and now the negatives of xylitol are coming to light
