Hey Guys
I saw someone asked me to post a day of us in bad weather. I was really hoping i wouldn't have the chance to film the yacht in bad weather and definitely did not plan to loose an engine, but hey. It happened and I managed to grab a few glimpses of it on film.
Comment what you would like to see and ill try my best to film it.

Thanks for watching and catch you on the next one

I posted this video FULLY KNOWING there would be some abuse thrown at me from the comment section. I have completed approximately 33 700 nautical miles at sea. A large portion of the East African coast, South Africa, 2 cross Atlantic's, the English Channel, and a large part of the Mediterranean. I HAVE EXPERIENCED FAR WORSE SEAS than the ones displayed in this video. This video was made because I received a comment that requested a video showcasing bad sea. This is the worst we would take this boat in with following seas and as a result, made the video. I have no problem with you commenting the sea is not that big, because... its not. The way the boat was reacting, the key turning off, all of it together was enough reason to film the video. Anyway, thanks for the abusive comments, the more people that comment the more my channel gets displayed to people so, thanks for your help ;)

jared watney could have discussed a bit about hull design performance relative to sea states to give some perspective. Just to make people realise tradeoffs in choosing a hull design rather than give a bad impression on the boat.

It is really hard to catch the size of the seas on camera. Waves always look smaller on video, especially the large swells. What looks small on video, in reality is, allowing hundreds of thousands of pounds to body surf. That said, in the grand scheme of things, that isn't a particularly bad sea state but, like you say, it depends on the capabilities of the yacht. Just like a car, going around a corner at 45 mph is mundane in a Ferrari. Hit that same corner at 45 in an SUV and it will be a hair raising experience.

Jared, I'm a former Navy Diver. I can appreciate this video and the challenges you and your crew face. I enjoy your videos, they are informative. It's my desire to purchase a yacht in a few years, and your blogs helps me to have a better understanding of what to expect. Thank you! Please continue your blogs and forget the naysayers...you're doing a creat job, not to mention a service for the industry, both for crew and owners. Good luck!!

I was a naval officer serving on a guided missile cruiser (a big ship) in the Pacific. Once we had to ride out a storm that was severe enough that the bridge crew had to hold onto overhead lines. The ship would roll so far that our feet couldn't touch the deck. On each roll we were suspended in the air, hanging from one arm, while we tried to do our jobs using the other arm. It was alarming seeing the port or starboard bulkhead almost become the deck on every roll. That was a very exhausting thing to endure, especially at 2, 3, 4 in the morning.

@justaddwata 5 лет назад
Thing most viewers probably won't realize is that big seas and motion rarely show up well on camera. Especially when filmed from the boat that is moving etc. Even when watching extreme waves hitting full sized ships the size and force of the waves really is lost on video. You have a great series of videos Jared - I have viewed most of them and have grown to like your passion for the job and interest in the viewer!

Damn chef, haha. He doesn't give a shit. I bet he's got a round bottom fishbowl somewhere, for cooking in a hurricane. And a rockclimbers gear to strap him to each wall. He's going "Sluurrrp. Ah, just a pinch of curry. And some roasted cashews.", while on the radio the news broadcaster is going "It's confimed! England has sunk into the sea and Spain has shattered into a hundred islands. Oh the dread! Norway has been swallowed by a freak wave!" "Hmm, maybe some lavender blossoms as plate decoration for the ladies?"

Great video, I know that you can’t judge the seas from a video. But after 40 years at sea I.have learned that surfing like that can be very dangerous. The vessel could get into an ever increasing roll cycles where she could eventually capsize. The only way to avoid this is to either increase or reduce speed or of course change speed. So the fact that your engine stopped was a blessing in disguise. There are some historic events where two sister vessels both disappeared when going down wind. I am talking about large cargo vessels which were lost with al crew gone. I like your videos, keep up the good work.

Johan, on a slightly different but related topic ,-did you ever hear about super ships being totally taken by 100M giant waves that were eventually proven by wave riders that record wave heights and send info back to a marine weather station-that had been taken out by these giant (100M)waves.

Enjoyed that, brought back memories of my days in the SA Navy in Strike Craft, top speed 40 knots but in heavy seas the throttles would be at 16 knots but we would go over 40 knots and on some occasions the bow would sink in as far as the bridge, meaning we would have to go into reverse to extract the boat.

Happy that you make us viewers aware of how much waves the vessel is made to handle, bad weather is relative to how the vessel is designed, and also how the people on board are used to the vessels movement, i have seen people complain about rough weather when the sea was almost flat, and the reason for the vessel rocking was mostly because we only sailed 11 knots(she was designed to do 18) and the stabilizers were broken. I like your videos, gives a good and unfiltered view of how life is on board ships

My worst storm with a 180’ USCG black hull was rolling to 39 degrees on the inclinometer, having a Viking stove rip the welds off the bulkhead and finally being in a troff and seeing the crest of the wave taller than out mast at about 85’ ! As a diver , I’ve been in worse seas with a smaller boat. I feel ya. I can remember buttoning up everything and coming back from an oil rig during a storm and watching my boss lift out of his seat and float mid air. One thing I would recommend is keep some painters tape on those mirror doors. Peel it off when it’s done and no smudges but keeps them secure.

Sold my 38' Carver 20 years ago but do remember my least favourite is a following sea. It keeps the helmsman 100% busy and gives the vague feeling of not being in complete control. I was only on a lake but the reach was big and it came out of nowhere. You always remember the scary cruises fondly years later. In rough weather I prefer the flybridge with lots of fresh air keeping my eyes on the horizon - better than dramamine! If I was the owner you would have a clause in your contract to keep a 2 or 3 day scruff whenever possible. It suits you. :) Keep up with the vlogs Jared. They are great.

If it makes you feel any better, I understand a little of what you went through. We, too, went out on Lake Erie (Very large, but very shallow) for a 105nm sail. The winds climbed past the forecast and our anemometer stopped functioning as the wind climbed past 40knots AWS (we were moving about 10 knots so I figure over 50 knots true wind speed). The waves grew in the shallow lake to over 15' (4.5m) and steep. We hit 15.6 knots SOG as it was throwing us across the lake. The difference is that our boat is 26' (8m) with a beam of 7.5' (2.3m) ... and I was hand steering on a tiller through 18 hours of that nonsense. Albeit different situations between your mega yacht, and my little old sailboat, but I understand the emotions you were going through. One difference is you were looking down at the waves from inside, while I was outside, looking up at them as they blocked out the sun/moon, every time we were in the trough of a wave. As you said... maybe big ships don't worry about such things, but when the little boats are in it, it's a different world. Anyway, thought I would share as I know few other people that have sailed / motored through such weather. Thanks for the walk down memory lane and keep up with the videos. Wealthy mega yachts aren't my world... but strangely addictive to view.

As a Navy veteran myself you won’t get any judgement or “why didn’t you do this this and this” type comments from me because honestly no amount of preparation can fully prepare you and the boat for really crappy seas and storms. We would always do what we called “secure for sea” where we would tie up, strap up, and in many cases duct tape anything and everything that we could think of that would go flying or swing open or what have you lol, but that was on a Navy warship, not a yacht with guests, so I can imagine why doing stuff like that wouldn’t be an option. Anyways, love the sea stories and hope you share more in the future, I’ve got a few myself lol. Take care mate!

Going just a little slower than the waves and not letting them hit you directly on the side it’s the best thing to do. We had even worse weather once in a smaller boat. It was a 17 meter lobster type motor yacht. The waves were mostly around 5 meters but in places reached 7. We were doing a crossing across the Adriatic from Italy to Croatia. At first there was just wind but as you said the waves start building up as time goes by.

Worst weather I've ever been in on a boat was 9 foot to 12 foot swells in a 34 foot sport cruiser, we were not more than 10 or 12 miles from the channel we needed to get into and we were cruising at about 35 knots trying to outrun the waves because they would swamp the boat entirely if one hit from behind and we were literally jumping the boat from crest to crest of each wave. Let me tell you that being at a 50 degree vertical angle on a smaller boat is something you never ever want to experience, we got in okay but the entirety of the cabin was a wreck.

After seeing all the beautiful Mega Yachts and their luxury, it’s great to see what actually happens on them while they’re in use. The host (Jared) is amazing. Very knowledgeable and just the right tone as a host and skilled guide. Thanks so much for creating this channel. I spend WAYYYY too much time here... but it’s better than watching the news....

You're right Jared for a small yacht that is big seas, coming from a merchant background 10 meters waves is when s*** really hits the fan for 300m ships.

Great vid mate. This video shows why a small steel hull Feadship costs 3-4 times more than a similar sized composite Sanlorenzo. Horses for courses.

In my experience, the people who tell you what you should have done in a particular sea are people who don't have much experience of being at sea. Most people who have actually been there know that you only ever try to make the best decisions that you can under the circumstances.

Right ON, Dear Helm Hog, et al. Mom used to say it's winging it with fine. Also there are times "you just have to follow that bullfrog's instructions. Tack it. Tack it. Tack it". If not, you can wind up doing a permanent somersault. That is, that everswelling monster thing until the boat capsizes bow first. So there, armchair blabber mouths. Good description, Captain John. Almost done that, there for a few hours, that's why we are all still here. Whew. Close call.
