Yep if you would have unlocked more characters instead of two stupid statues, this game would have been amazing because people would have actually cared for the coin counter
Mario is communist propaganda, Sonic is anti communist propaganda. Ask me if you want to say how. The first is from game theory, the second is from a Russian RU-vidr so you don't know how sonic is capitalism
It's actually really refreshing to watch a review of the NSMB series that ACTUALLY talks about the level design. I always kept hearing the same "Oh every game is the same blah blah blah" but the levels aren't always the same, so why don't they talk about that!? The most important thing in a 2D Mario game.
@@Patolagos I hate Super Mario Galaxy 2 for that same reason, if they want to do the same game with something new that's fine. But at least take the story in a scarier direction instead of having the same story as a first one.
@@buzzytrombone4353 SMG2 many have some better challenges, but the plot/story took a nosedive into repetitiveness. Even the Giant Bowser fight were gimmicky and lost its luster. SMG1 was the better overall game for at least having that cinematic approach and Bowser's boss battles at least felt like your actually fighting him. Not to mention the story. It became somewhat more than just "Bowser kidnapped Peach, go save her." It became something bigger the moment Rosalina was introduced. Honestly, my drive was to help Rosalina and her Luma star babies, because Bowser invaded their home and stole their power reserves. The only time I actually remember my main goal to save Peach when they mention it on some occasions.
12:37, if I had to guess, when you hit that ?-block, the collision on the top of the block went down ever so slightly, causing you to sink lower, and being squished between the wall at that other ?-block.
@@gamerboygaming No, this is bad game design, it really doesn't matter if that block is there or not, what matters is the collision of ?-blocks working in that way.
sAUFvevo Yeah, but it dosen’t happens in that way very often, so you wouldn’t need to change the entire physics of the blocks to fix the issue. Just spread the blocks out a bit.
Even that theres not a good reward for achieving 1 million coins, I like that this is the first game on the series which didnt have save peach as the only goal, and I like that, they expand upon the concept of this series yet making it the same as the previous games
Well, to be fair, "Color Splash" released on a console that was doomed to fail. Even if it turned out to be the best Paper Mario game ever, it would still be a Wii U game. And even though "Sticker Star" was probably the worst Paper Mario game, it was still a 3DS game. Games can only sell as good as the consoles they're packaged with, and the 3DS happened to sell more than the N64 and GameCube combined. So the fact that "Thousand-Year Door" and "Sticker Star" are so close to each other in sales, regardless of which game "won", it says more good things about the GameCube title than the 3DS title.
Plus, the GameCube didn't sell all that great despite having amazing games, it came at a bad time and was considered behind its time. But God if GameCube aren't just the bees knees
All the more reason why we need a PMTTYD remake. Hell, I'm surprised they haven't done it yet for the 3DS. Luigi's Mansion got one and that's one of the best titles for the GameCube.
I always felt like this game was heavily underrated. For me, it's always been the most interesting and engaging to me compared to the other New Soup games
Finally some love for NSMB2, I had an absolute blast while playing this game! I know it's the same as the ones before but as you put it in words it's the little changes. It's my favorite entry of the franchise. (I haven't play the Wii U ones tho)
@@zmawells not really, comparing this this game to every game in the Mario series, this is just the most boring one of them all. After you beat the game it's really repetitive for replayability. Don't be blinded by the Nostalgia
"Butt cheeks" lol that got a laugh out of me. NSMB2 is pretty basic but I enjoy playing it as a very basic Mario from time to time still to improve my coin counter and I still want to beat the Impossible Pack one day....
The "bolted box things" in Mario 3 are stage props used to construct the platforms. If you pay attention, you'll notice that the entire game takes place within a play.
When I first saw the commercial for this game I was so pumped! I thought " a sequel to the first game I ever played? Sign me up!" Looking back at the game I can see its flaws, but I still love it from a nostalgia standpoint.
Its great to see somebody actually liking NSMB2. Im so tired of just hearing people say its so unoriginal and not new. I was expecting you to spit on this game just like everyone else. But im so proud of you. Like i mean. You gave the game a lot of 1ups. Im so surprised
Cool to see a positive view on this game. I always felt like the vibrant colors, more unique level themes (in some areas) and really focused and interesting level design (plus all the crazy coin shit you can do) made the game feel really energetic. Also, something I feel that all other NSMB titles are missing is a proper flying power up. I know NSMB 2 reuses an old one but it's a damn good one and also added a lot to the game for me. I kind of like to think of the series as just the DS and 3DS entry. Imagine how awesome we'd all think it was if those two were the only ones that came out (well and New Super Luigi U too possibly).
12:32 whenever luigi ground pounds the block, he slightly pushes it downwards before it opens up. Because there was one beside it at a normal height level, Luigi was pushed into the wall by the moving barriers and therefore died.
It's a fun game, but there's many questionable things, like why did they remove stuff that was in the Wii version, like Yoshi, or some of the power ups like the Penguin Suit, or Bowser Jr, or getting to go into Peach's Castle? I don't see any point in cutting content in this game when they could literally just copy and paste it from the Wii to New Super Mario Bros 2 (Just like they did with every thing else in this game!).
You touched on it briefly in your video, but my goodness the small addition of the a cappella music was absolutely wonderful to me. I've always been a fan of just about every main Mario title's Staff Roll, but this one's soundtrack really made completing the game feel like, "sh*t, what now?" Additionally, the theme of the Star world (tied in with the reskin of the "Moon Coins") gave off a really mesmerizing vibe. Enough for me to get off the internet for tonight, fish out my Red 3DS and play my midnight away under the covers just like I did with NSMB 1 and my Red Regular DS all those years ago. Thanks:)
I absolutely adore this game, and the best part of it is the Co-op mode, and definitely the Coin Rush mode WITH the DLC, hands down. It's my most played 3DS game. Excellent use of the Streetpass feature
I remember this game being my guilty pleasure. I had a bunch of eShop points from Christmas Eve that I decided to spend on it, months after it released. It's nothing incredible, but the dopamine hit from turning everything into coins made me feel like King Midas. I just wish they could have made coins a bit more important to the game, possibly by rewarding players with a challenge mode with difficult levels, or a boss rush mode, after collecting a certain amount of coins. I liked it when I played it, but going back to the 3DS circle pad instead of an D-pad means that I'm unlikely to return to it.
@Scp 939 this game wasn't so much popular so it doesn't matter anyways and all the new ennemies, level themes and character's abilities are now canon in the mario universe
It's funny, despite this game being generally regarded as the "Worst" in the NSMB series, I think it might be my favorite! (And for a lot of the reasons you listed) Sure, there's a lot of recycled content from the previous games but the way that content is reused is actually really solid when dig a little deeper and take it at more than just it's face value. I remember having so much fun with this game when I first got it, and even going back to it periodically it's still a genuinely fun game, and I think that's the whole point of it. It's not trying to be ground breaking or push the boundaries of what a Mario game should or shouldn't be, it's just trying to be Fun. And in the words of Reggie: "If the game's not fun, why bother?".
I just wish they wouldn't remove some of the content that was from the Wii game like Yoshi. I also wish they' would improve on the Bosses to make their fights more fun and challenging, but they're just as boring (If not more boring) than the Wii version, because they still lack any strategy to their fights.
I don't regret getting this as my free game from Club Nintendo. It's a fun time killer, but I wish it'd done more. On that note, some aspects of this would be nice to see return.
Nintendo: *checks how well NSMB2 did* oh jeez we did good on that guys! And it gave me an idea for our next game! Get ready for New Super MARIO Bro’s 2squared!
"But we also get that Mario 3 aesthetic with lots of vibrant colors.." Uh, Mario 3's color palette is 50 shades of brown with some black and white everywhere. I always thought it was very dull looking.
Yeah I think Mario 3 is more grungy but with outlines that really pop that add to a cartoony look. I really like Mario 3's art style, and the weird patterns that they use for the ground. It's neat
Nice review! Im excited to see your NSMBU Review, so far that is my fav 2D Mario game :) It has a lot of elements from past Mario games, like Mario world or NSMBWii, but it has enough elements to stand by its own, and dont get me started with how much I loved NSLU :)
NSMBU was sooo good, I don't understand people that hate on it. I've played the whole game with my brother and my two cousins, I'd love to go back to that time...
I always thought that everyone hated on this entry too much. Although it's stupid easy and I beat it in a day, I'd say that it's easily the 2nd best New Super Mario game.
At 12:33, you got squashed because you ground-pounded the block, which moved it, and thus, Luigi, downward. Because the blocks were moving towards a wall, you were compressed between the block and wall and met an untimely death.
Ben Powell yes, I’ve been eyeballing smm 2 for quite some time. I’ll probably pick it up when I get tired of New Horizons or get it for my birthday or something like that
It's nice seeing somebody review the NSMB games and talk about more that the repition of the games. These have been very unique and refressing reviews for not so unique games. Keep up the good work!
Funny how Silok was talking about SALES in a video about the New Super Mario Bros game that’s the most obsessed with MONEY. (And yes, I am aware that that’s probably the point.)
Thanks for making this video, it’s perhaps the fairest evaluation of this game I’ve seen and perfectly explains all the reasons I love it too. Even when it first came out, I could feel there was a fundamental difference to the game design brought on by the coin focus that sets it apart, both from the other NSMB games and the rest of the 2D Mario platformers. One comment - I suspect the reason the multiplayer is confined to one screen is that if the players were in separate locations, two screens’ worth of objects would be loaded at once, which could slow down the game. I did experience some framerate drops when there were lots of coins onscreen, even in single player.
12:35 seems like the block lowered after you groundpounded on it and of course, that means you would get squished by a wall and a stubby little block corner
These bolted blocks are supposed to be scenery in a theatrical play, cause that's what SMB3 is canonically, the same way SMB2 is a dream. They are bolted because they are decorations on a board, and given the context of the game, it makes sense and it is a very nice touch once you understand it. Here though, it's not the same. They are bolted for no reason, they just came back cause they looked nice. And I'm not complaining, they do look nice. Btw these are the exact points I bring up when I say that this is strangely my favorite in the series. The exact ones. Also, here (12:34) what happened is that when you ground-pound an unhit block and you see it move in rythm with your butt, it's not just decoration. The block physically moves up and down. Causing the wall to smoosh you between it and a small crevise from the other block. Kinda stupid, I know.
4:08 Strangely, they also returned in Super Mario 3D Land, which took MORE from Super Mario Bros 3 than this game did, including the Overworld (albeit very very heavily remixed) and Athlethic (more recognisable, but still remixed) themes.
If they added a good few power ups into 2 then I feel like it could have been a bit better of a game. Ice, Penguin and propeller are missing and I feel like they could have put at least ice and propeller to mix up some of the levels but I guess we never will ever get them
