The reason why the Deluxe version of this game has sold .06 million more copies than the original isn’t because it’s on the Switch, or because it has both NSMBU and NSLU. It was because it has the perfection that is Toadette.
No offense but I find that to be a big lie the Wii U sold very bad and while NSMBU was one of the highest selling game on the system the switch is also portable which is a big selling point but I do agree with it selling well because it also has SSLU but hey that’s my opinion
I was introduced to the series over Christmas and it very quickly became one of my favorite party games. We even started doing Friday night Jackbox on the SilokHawk Discord!
My wife is not a gamer, but does enjoy games where she can play more of a support role. The game pad platforms were perfect for her and she genuinely enjoyed helping me complete levels in that way as she wasn't interested in actually playing through them herself. She's weird. I love her.
5:31 Nintendo actually made small posters of the overworld for random giveaways at conventions or events or stuff like that. I got mine from a Smash Bros Tournament, nothing special but looks pretty cool
He didn't actually fully play this game. I have a feeling that he just half-played the first world then called it a day. I don't know, I had so much fun with this game.
The NSMBU Star Coins being impossible is actually kind of a meme in Germany. *“HAB ICH NE GLASKUGEL VOR MIR ODER WOHER SOLL ICH DAS WISSEN?“* *“DIE ROTEN MÜNZEN!“*
the starcoin at 13:27 was actually telegraphed in a really smart way imo. That Level had a secret section where you get a mini mushroom and one of the new abilities of the mini mushroom in this game is that you can run along walls with it. After you leave that section you can just straight up hold right and sprint through the rest of the level by running along the walls but there's that one wall where you always fall of and lose momentum when transitioning from the wall to the ground which is exactly where the hole in the wall is. From the outside you wouldn't see a reason for why you would always fall off on this exact wall but not any other one but once you know what's up it makes perfect sense. I agree some secrets are pretty dull but in my opinion this one was actually really clever.
You can also get the penguin and helicopter suits from those battle levels that happen when you run into a enemy in the overworld. At least that’s how it is in deluxe.
EXCUSE ME?!? Two random toads I’ll have you know the two random toads have names too Bucken-Berry is blue Ala-Gold is yellow This post was made by berry blue gang
I was actually that kid who wanted to play with the gamepad, but only for Coin Battle. If I remember right, there's a mode that lets a player place the coins & Star Coins in the levels that the others compete in. As a kid, I really enjoyed that; we made it so whoever was placing the coins was by themselves so the coin collectors didn't know where they were placed and seeing my friends fight over any Star Coins I placed was fun for me. It was also the closest thing to an official level editor at the time, so I was all over it.
Hm. I can see where you’re coming from. I definitely think that your disposition comes from you playing all of these back to back. Is there a whole lot of new here? Nah, not really. But if you separate the games from each other, and judge them individually? It is absolutely the best in the series. It has the best level design hands-down, it learned from its predecessors and it’s a collage of the best things from the previous games, with some new stuff thrown in. And the large number of homages to Mario World was really great as well! Something to keep in mind: NSMB and NDMBW were based on SMB. NSMB2 was based on Mario 3. And NSMBU was based on SMW. That gives me a whole lot of appreciation for this series as a whole.
I totally agree, I watched the video and sometimes literally raged on the way he bashed minor things and the fact that they repeated things from previous titles which is totally expected
@@doomse150 Eh, I can certainly see where he comes from. The series does kinda deserve its reputation for not having much "new" about it. And there is a LOT of repetition. But still, it's the best designed game of the four and it does have quite a few new things in it. Played it again on the Switch and I still love it...and I'm not even that much of a platformer guy xD
Maybe it's just in deluxe, but you can get penguin suits by defeating enemy's in the ice world (like the penguin battles were they hit you and you fight) and the same goes for the propeller suit.
To be fair Nintendo already has a successful racing-game. Having to create a new entry from a franchise that has a totally different aspect to it would probably drive (no pun intended) people who aren't hardcore F-Zero fans away. F-Zero is hard, man. The casual audience of Mario Kart wouldn't melt right in.
Your little sibling example showed to me that you totally misunderstood the purpose of this feature. The idea is that you hand the Wiimote to your little sibling and use the boost blocks to make the levels easier to them, so they could handle them. Or on the other hand, you could just use them to mess with players, because blocks also are a good way to make the game harder.
13:26 This one actually makes sense. I think they had a Spike set up to roll its ball into the hole. You see the ball disappear instead of breaking, and so you investigate it. If you don't have a mushroom, you just go through.
@@sirk603 when ign reviwed this game the guy that was reviewing it seemed like he hated it but when he gave his final score he still gave a 9 i think he also said "it has a little something for everyone"
Blake Backes well I suggest Mario oddesey, smash bros, and breath of the wild. Mario maker is good if your into 2d platforming. (Don’t get Mario maker if your not going to get online). Mario kart is good. If your looking for a hard and really good platforming donkey Kong country is good. If your into puzzles Luigi’s mansions is good. Oh and animal crossing is animal crossing
Even with this game's flaws, it's my all time favorite. Before I actually got the game, I was gushing about those beautiful backgrounds. They are way better than Wii's backgrounds. Then there's the ground tiles. I love them way more than Wii. The level design was better than Wii yet less memorable... At first. Now I know where almost every star coin and 1-Up are in all of these games. I think Wii had a great idea as a level, then did it okay. While U reused those ideas and executed them way better. Like the water Bubbles in 7-2 of Wii compared to 7-6 of U. The Wii version was so bland and underwhelming compared to U's version of that level. I love all of these games. U is my favorite and the one I enjoyed the most. I thought 2 was more fun than Wii and I played Wii the most. I guess I'm weird... ☺
No, I agree. I think people focus far too much on how samey these games are to each other, when it's much more interesting looking at them as gradually polishing the same formula. They're all the same game. They reuse gimmicks and bosses. We get it. But U is by far the best execution of the formula, with just about every great gimmick from the NSMBU series and more.
Nah, I agree U is the best and I also would say that approaching each entry in the series with the question “What does this game do to innovate on the formula?” is bound to leave one disappointed, whereas if you ask “how does this game improve on or refine the formula of the previous games?” you’ll have a much more enthusiastic impression of U. An aspect of this series that I respect is that it forces the issue of whether “innovation” per se is a good thing. Consider the inclusion of Nabbit in U-one of the few genuinely new things the game does compared to its predecessors-and to what result? In my opinion the Nabbit levels are more or less disposable, they aren’t actively bad but they really add nothing to the game (nor do we ever learn anything about Nabbit the character, other than that he’s kind of an asshole?). It’s not surprising SilokHawk had very little to say about Nabbit in this video.
@@fredjd11 You are right, It's not because the game add billions of new thing that it's good, It's maybe New but not good. The best example is Newer Wii, it tries so hard to add way more thing than the Wii one and be much original that it forget sometimes to be fun. Most of the new ideas are poorly executed and some worlds are just boring. This is why I think Newer DS is better, because it may not be Newer, or even New, but It's definitly better executed than Newer Wii
SuperWorld Team Refinement over innovation is an an unusual tack to take in the world of video games, especially when it comes to Nintendo, but I think that was the design philosophy with the NSMB titles-as if Nintendo were asking themselves, “How can we bring the same (or at least, a very similar) experience to this console?” In that sense it’s worth noting how of the four NSMB titles each is unique to their native system (DS, Wii, 3DS and Wii U).
Having played through NSMBUD on the Switch, I actually found myself liking the feel and the level design, and the map that felt like SMW. I wish it was actually visually upgraded, but it is a well-made platformer.
New super Mario bros Wii u That name couldn't be further from the truth. The only new thing about this game is the U in the title. Like really this game just feels like dlc for new super Mario bros. They really aren't striving for originality.
I like the fact that this game shows what happens when Bowser successfully takes over a kingdom. So all those times we seen Bowser in lava worlds were Kingdoms he colonized.
What the series should have been after NSMB DS: No where to go but up! Make every game distinct from each other. What it is now: change everything, but the style, and the art direction.
So I just finished this on the switch last night and as someone who's last New Sper Mario bros game was on the DS, I really really enjoyed it! I found it nice and fresh but I can totally understand how people would be burnt out by the series at this stage.
Yes same to me. My first video game was mario on the ds. And my second game was mario bros u. i haven't played the wii version or the 3ds version and hence felt left out while watching the gameplay videos on youtube. But once i started the mario bros u, i enjoyed it like anything. all those new power ups were like aahh........
Although this comment might be too specific and underrated, I suggest that you should maybe try the most amazing fan made nsmb wii - Newer super mario wii by the newer team. It should be awesome in your standard!
Imagine if the final castle was still recognizably Peach's Castle, but with a half-finished Death Star 2 ish aesthetic. With Bowser's workers, like Rocky Wrenches, making it look more evil. Loads of half finished Bowser statues and spikes everywhere. That would be great. You could destroy bits of the castle with Mega Mushrooms and Fire Flowers to restore it to normal.
The fact that they released Mario Maker on Wii U a short while after this was kind of like Nintendo acknowledging that they had run out of ideas with the 2D Mario formula.
I don't know why people think that because a game has "new" in the title means that a game has to be different. I've always seen it as the series title, and nothing more. It's not 4 games claiming that they are new and different from each other. It's a series of 4 games that are like the original Super Mario Bros, but new.
No one thinks they need to be different just because the title has the word "new" in it, everyone thinks they should be different because a series shouldn't just be basically the game just on different consoles
If they're making a new NSMB game, it has to actually be "new". I want a full-on 2.5D Mario. The 3D World style in SMM2 gives a decent idea of what it could be, with the bonzai bills, meowser, and the blargs, and I would love to see what Nintendo could do if they made a game focused on things like these. I mean, just look at the newer DKC and Kirby games. Imagine that kind of thing done with Mario.
I would only wish they did so. But at this point, Nintendo is just creatively sterile when it comes to 2D Mario. I wouldn't be surprised if they literally make another game that reuses the same assets of U for their entry into '4K' on their next system.
honestly for my family the gamepad mode was really cool, me my 2 brothers and my parents would want to play all at the same time, this meant that one person would sit out on the wii version but with the gamepad mode we would switch off per level so everyone got to do something, i thought it was a lot of fun as a kid but it only is useful for that very specific situation
There is a totally fair point to allowing baby Yoshis to be carried and not regular Yoshis and I think you know it as well as I do. Having Yoshi in a level that is not meant for Yoshi just trivializes the whole stage, while having a baby Yoshi has distinct pros and cons. Furthermore, you can't carry baby Yoshis out of levels that you got in the specific level (mostly the golden ones)
11:00 We had an auto scroller with parabeetles so YOU had an auto scroller with parabeetles! We had an Icicle cave so YOU had an Icicle cave! We had a level where you keep enemies off your raft so YOU had a level where you keep enemies off your raft! 🤣
NSMBU is my favorite NSMB game. I think the level design is outstanding. A lot of people will point to the painting level, which is amazing, but I also love the totem eye levels, the lava rising level in World 8, the star ice level, the pink background sky level, the icicle cavern level, Ludwig's castle, the final castle with Bowser Jr. chasing you, and the final Special Star Road level with the ball and chains.
If I were to rank the NSMB games: 1. New Super Mario Bros. - Great level design - Unique Boss Fights - The Best Final Castle - Final Boss is pretty good - The Best Multiplayer - Minigames are fun - Only one with unique music - Love the chip tune OST (World 7 Overworld theme) 2. New Super Mario Bros U. - Like that the game has Peach's Castle slowing turning Evil and having it in the background of some levels (World 1, World 7, World 8) - Level design is consistently good - Nice art direction (Also Painting level) - Challenge Mode and other extra modes is Fun - Multiplayer Is Fun - Bosses are pretty good - Final Boss/Castle with Bowser Jr. is also pretty good - Reused Music though - Love the Overworld. - New Super Luigi U. (I count it as DLC, but some people might consider it it's own thing, but idk) 3. New Super Mario Bros. 2 - Really good level design - Colors Pop more/Nice Art Direction - Weakest Bosses in the Series - Coin Gimmick doesn't do it for me - Best Soundtrack (despite being reused) - Final Castle with the Koopa Kids is pretty good - Weakest Final Boss personally - Coin Rush is ok - Multiplayer is Fun 4. New Super Mario Bros. Wii - 1/3 of the Game feels empty (My main problem with the game) - Colors don't really pop / Least interesting to look at. - 2/3 of the levels are pretty good. - Cool seeing the Koopa Kids in 3D for the 1st time. - Extra modes are kinda lame. - Final Castle is kinda generic - Best Final Boss (Love the Final Boss theme) - Introduced 4 Player Multiplayer
Most Star Coins are indeed very stupid, but there's one I remember where you took a different exit in a level and then entered a castle through the _back door_, so you started off the level in a different place than you would normally. There, you could find a Star Coin you otherwise wouldn't be able to get to. That was so original and I loved it. And as a Dutchie, I die inside a little every time I hear the pronunciation of 'Van Gogh' that is at 10:36. And no, it's not 'Van Goff' either.
Liked this video a lot! I love this series since I grew up with it, and I’m glad to see you’re doing this video series... I feel like I’ve said this before...
Ok, just a little correction. I dunno if this is exclusive to Deluxe, but there is a small chance that you can get a Propeller Mushroom or Penguin Suit from enemy fights. I'm sure they can happen in any world, but I've found it is most common in Layer-Cake Desert and Frosted Glacier.
13:15 Yes, like, I remember being a kid and finding the castle secret, because it's some random room and there's a way *to the right* with a *different block* drawing me in just to investigate, and of course I found the secret, but it made me feel really smart. That's a good example of a well hidden secret
I totally agree with you about the genius of the Propeller Mushroom and Penguin Suit to be locked to World 9, but the Deluxe port changed that, with you being able to get them through Toad Houses in the standard worlds.
